awesome. I think this is my issue. Same thing, brand new (well a year old and rarely used). Full of fuel, not on a hill, breaker switch in correct postion, all fuses good, circuit breakers good, Battery fully charged, checked all connections and wires good to go, spark plug good. Thing is I haven't started it for months. Had no idea I'd need to start it every couple of weeks. Going to try this trick in the am when it's light out. Pretty sure it's going to solve my problem too.
Carb jets may have a little bit of gunk, but you need to prime the fuel line by pushing the rocker switch to the back for about 3 seconds or till the light is lit on the rocker.
thanks! my same genset has about 80 hrs, same deal, won't start, and does exactly what yours did.. but I have found if I hold the choke for a second it will fire.. so def a fuel issue.. I am going to try your clean out!
This is how I fixed. In my case of ( I can't start my generator) it's has been two years since last time was running. I started by checking oil level, gasoline more than 1\4 tank in my RV, sparkplug checked for good spark, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, check wires and found some has been damaged by rats so I replaced them, by this time it started but stay runing only by keep pushing the switch on all time, so I knew it was electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage. I disassemble the unit by removing the cover, then the cooling fan until I was at the engine brushes area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by rats plus the stinky nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the cooper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats. I assembled everything back together and bingo it's runing like a champion, for this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller to pull the aluminum fan out. Just keep in mind that (Eny engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover becouse you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one, just kidding!!! If this can help eaven one person it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!
I think the carb cleaner acting as a starting fluid. Spraying into the carb throat might clean the choke and butterfly valves but not any jets. Watch the old fuel too and beware of the oil overfilling problem too.
The shop that does the repairs on the Onan generator wanted over 700. to fix it.They said it needed a new carburetor.I used starting fluid(4.00 a can)and it started right up and ran fine.Might need a new Air cleaner.Better than 700 plus.
Mine starts up when I hit the carb with starter fluid or carb cleaner, but it only starts up for a few seconds and then shuts off. It will start up everytime I hit it with starter fluid, I checked the gas line going into the carb and it seems as if the gas is flowing fine. Any idea how to fix this problem? Please ?

Best thing that you can do for a gas engine that isn't run daily or at least weekly is to put in a fuel shutoff valve. Close the valve and run it till it dies. Fuel sitting in the bowl gums up the jets. Shutoff valves only cost a few bucks.
Prime the carb with fuel by rocking the start switch to the left for 3 seconds after the light on the switch comes on. Then release the switch. Then start, rock switch to the right. This is the instructions in the manual for starting the Cumins/Onan 4000.
In a no spark issue i have discovered on bg series 5500 marqis a broken rotor was the problem for me and replaced it and fixed after much study for 45 dollars ty
Trying to start mine after sitting all im getting is clicking sound motor not trying to start the batteries are low so im charging i hope that helps any tips ?
Turns out it wasn’t my issue. Turns out mine is a Propane model. Had the propane turned off. Who knew? Certainly not the guy that went over everything with me when I bought it. Said it got fuel from the diesel tank and not to let it go below 1/4 tank. Certainly not the manual that came with the RV and the actual manual when I finally found one online kinda half ass mentions LPG. Turns out I have the LP model which means Liquid propane. Just put two and two together and went out, turned on the gas and started up just fine. Ugh
Z Shark it fired up but only stayed on when i kept on spraying carb cleaner in the carb. I dont know what to do now. I have spark i have fuel going to the carb. I dont know what else to do. Maybe a new carb?
That means the very small passage ways in the carb are plugged up with dirty fuel. You can try draining the float bowl on bottom of carb a few times. If that doesn't work you will need to take the carb off. And clean or replace it.
Z Shark good news i got my generator started it needed more persistence compared to yours I used a full can of carb cleaner and there was a lot of backfire. But she runs perfectly fine now. Thank you for this video. It helped me. I woulda never known what was wrong
your not priming it read the manual. push the switch to stop/prime for 5 or 10 seconds you hear the fuel pump at the generator .Than push start switch. On my Rv you can do this on the generator or on dash switch or at the control panel.
