Hi plastic lovers,
Time has come to face the biggest challenge of this project...
Let's see together how I'm moving forward with the Ramelle's bridge scale model creation.
The scale is 1/35th to accomodate the rest of my vehicles (Tiger 1, Kettenkrad and BMW R75) and the whole thing has been build with XPS foam.
What can you expect in this 1st episode?
Well, I share with you my difficulties, challenges and how I managed to pass through until the sculpting procedures that I'll share with you in the next episode together with the cobbled stones creation.
You can learn here how to cope with XPS foam cutting and which type of foam you need to find, but also, how to plan the sculpting and how to convert railroad tracks to tramway tracks.
Here are the main chapters to help you navigate through the content...
00:00 - Intro
04:53 - Cut procedures
08:05 - 3D planning
11:38 - Damages
14:06 - Sagging effect
14:58 - Top walls
16:42 - Stones drawings
19:36 - Railroad to tramway tracks conversion
Hope you'll find here interesting infos to face new challenges for your own dioramas.
Should you have any questions, feel free to ask.

This is an absolutely fantastic presentation. It is a really good walk-through, and very useful for me as I have to build a bridge for a future diorama using XPS foam.

Wow! What a wonderful job! Not only the handcraft part, especially your detailed explanations during the Video are very, very, worthful. The table with the XPS foam properties and corresponding explanations is also something that is never shown in other (even good) tutorials. Thank you for that outstanding video! Excellent work! This will make for an excellent diorama when it is done! Now your only decision is whether to model a historical scene, or showing the movie being made. Though that could be an interesting idea with camera and production crew figures in addition to the actors in US Army uniforms; modifying a T-34/85 into an ersatz Tiger would be a project even more extensive than the bridge itself! In any case, you are superb modeler! 269th like.

@18thsquadlab 5 месяцев назад
Many thanks, it's very kind of you 🙏🙏 I like maintaining a bit of self freedom in my work so it will be a mix of the movie (as a support) but trying to bring an additional touch of historical reality (to some extent, like the Tiger 1). The bridge colour will also be different for example, to match the original Normandy architecture. That bridge was coloured to match director's wish and to produce a specify color edition for the movie 😊 the idea of reproducing the movie set-up with the cameras and so on could also be an awesome option....😉🤙

I made a German attack on a railyard in Stalingrad diorama. I went and bought some O scale track, popped the metal rail of the plasting sleepers and then made balsa sleepers and laid the track. The scale is close enough that no one cares. Cheap and easy.
@18thsquadlab
@18thsquadlab 5 месяцев назад
Fully agree 👍 it's much nicer with balsa sleepers. In my project, only a little part of some sleepers will be visible so I've had less work and I just focused on these visible segments 😁 I try to win time where possible 🤣

Well, as a retired railway engineer I can assure you that no standard gauge railroad is running over a bridge curve like this one, only Trolleys or extreme narrow gauge (2 ft ) did that in Europe. @18thsquadlab

Many thanks mate 🙏 I know this set but the fitting with the rest of the bridge structure looked very hard. The bridge here is about 85cm x 22cm 😁 it's a rather big stuff and it's not flat. It's for sure a big project but it offers me many new challenges to cope with and I'm learning a lot. 😉 it's a good way to become autonomous a become able to produce anything you need by yourself. I just have now many hours of work ahead... 😅 luckily, I can enjoy my Spotify playlists to stay zen.... 🤣🤣🤣

By using 1/35 th scale, you limit yourself to using plastic model vehicles and troops- which you must assemble. If you use 1/32 (54mm) scale, you can use assembled vehicles and troops from various makers. You'd have a much wider variety as well.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. When I was ten years old in 1970, my dad took me to see the movie "Patton" with George C. Scott. In that movie, American made Spanish Army M47 and M48 Patton tanks were 'cast' to portray both Allied Shermans and Axis Panzers. I had been building models for around four years by then, and had just built the 1/35 scale Monogram M48, so I could tell that something wasn't quite right. (And don't get me started on the M7 self-propelled howitzer 'cast' to portray a Tiger Tank in an episode of "Hogan's Heroes" that was made five years earlier.) Back in the day we knew how to actively suspend our disbelief to enjoy the movie because we were aware of these practical limitations. I suspect that future movies will make extensive use of CGI and AI to recreate more historically accurate hardware right down to the accurate color of raw, chipped Zimmerit. I mean, if Hollywood can make all that stuff for "Star Wars" by CGI, then why not an entire Panzer Division of realistic Tiger Tanks? And in any case, you have to admit that this scratch built XPS foam Ramelle bridge is excellent work! And the builder has plenty of 1/35 Tiger Tank kits to choose from.
@18thsquadlab
@18thsquadlab 5 месяцев назад
@modelermark172 thanks 🙏😉 you're right, they are already inserting more and more digital airplanes in Hollywood movies, I guess it's a bit more work for tanks because of Interaction with terrain, ground features and actors but it will become a standard 😉 why not if it's realistic...😊
