While Jojo is very much into jazz and pulls a lot of his influences from jazz drummers, he really isn't a "jazz drummer" per se.

Nice post, mellilore. Probably the best thing an artist can do to honor an influential musician is to digest the source material fully, then render the covers as "originally" as possible. Of course, this particular performance is more of an homage situation, so no doubt It's a fine line to walk. I would have liked to hear more of the traditional open and ringing sound with a "bigger" big band type of bravado. In a few spots these guys sound a tad clunky, almost like they could have used a bit more rehearsal time. But big thumbs up overall -- excellent musicianship on display.

Eh... I'm afraid the only way to make them rehearsal enough to cover the last 15-20% in order to fit 100% is having them playing 24 gigs in a month, take them altogether around in a bus and put on that bus.... Buddy!!! :) But you're definitely right, "excellent musicianship on display".

Definitely, agreed. Outdoor acoustics are impossible, and like mellilore says, these guys would need to undertake an active gig schedule for some time before they began to cohere at a high level. It's good stuff though.

This shows pretty good it's all relative :) Once 100% agreed that outdoor acoustics are quite impossible, let me tell you that I usually tend to be happy with his snare sound and quite happy with his bass drum sound, what I don't dig as much are his toms, and this happens each time I watch Jojo on the tube, not only this time. Look, I'm in no way criticizing him... who ever could??? plus on an "electric" small combo environment as Nerve and other things can be, that's very possibly the way one has to go. LOL at myself... You know what? I guess I just got way too used to listen at Buddy's drums.

There is another video on RU-vid from this concert with the song Time Check. The audio is worlds above the audio from this upload. I think you'll find the drum sound you're looking for in that video. Jojo solos and the drums resonate beautifully.

It's the epitome of a fecking god awful band of random session players picked out of the phone book with a set list probably chosen by the local mayor... (Not the local Mayer). Terrible. ...Soul-less supermarket swing.

Frank Lyons I mean jeez man, I was just curious to see what kind of drummer you like. You didn't need to belittle everyone who ever liked JoJo mayer. I mean, he's probably my favorite, though Dave Weckl is certainly a beast.

Jim Gordon is the greatest living drummer if we are talking about talent, resume, and credits, and what he did for drumming AND music.

No One I was under all impressions that Jim Gordon was the cop in Batman, I am sorry.

I disagree... I think Jojo is very unfamiliar to jazz territory and is newer to it, which shows in his playing.
