The pressure from the explosion is traveling upward, and the mud is also dampening the force exerted on the lock. You need a hard surface and something to hold the explosive directly to the latch.

Reminds me of when I was a teenager in the 70's. I love firecrackers, I used to blow a lot of shit up. When I was a kid there was a Masterlock commercial where they shot a masterlock, it didn't open. Fun video.

You need stronger pressure casings. Flash powder loves to be confined. The best ones always have the fuse going into the side of the case halfway down its length. If you think about it, when lit in the middle it burns outward in 2 directions, liberating the exact same amount of energy in half the time, as opposed from burning from one end of the tube to the other.. Faster blast impulse, aka Brisance.

For anyone thinking about making their own or using these, please do your research extensively on how to do everything safely, like using paper materials (paper bowl, plastic spoons) to mix supplies to avoid static and what mixtures are impact sensitive and how to safely store supplies, and try to be responsible using such things, a good distance away from houses or people to not disturb anyone or not doing damage to property or people, these are what made them illegal to begin with and we don’t need them making supplies to make them illegal or harder to get for people that are responsible with them or have their license to do so. Also I wouldn’t tell anyone about it or sell to anyone or post about it and just enjoy them as far away from houses and people and obviously not doing damage to things if you want to enjoy them without getting in trouble. If you sell it will increase your chances of getting caught as word will spread and people could be irresponsible with them. Be safe & responsible, have fun & god bless.

I wonder if the greyish powder was all plug or some flash powder too, since if you compress flash at bigger than 10 grams you might end up blowing up the casing before all the flash ignites.. Try leaving 30% air in the tube for full combustion, its how the italian firecrackers are build as well :)

I think the reason why the lock survived is because of the position almost the entire explosion impact/force is escaped in the air and not focused on the lock + the ground also absorbs most of the damage. I’ve seen video about just the size of Toronto cracker blow up washing machines and safes into pieces

You need to tape the explosive to the lock so it’s power is forced into the lock to blow it up. Not force the explosives away from the lock so it uses its force to break through the steal.

Well made video! I had not ever seen some of those fireworks and I am of Spanish origin, but very much an American and quite old... 76. I learned something from that about styles of fireworks. BTW... I think Master Lock should pay you for what turned out to be a testimonial to the quality and durability of their locks. Have you been approached by the company? They should see this video in my opinion. I have enjoyed pyrotechnics for all of my adult life. Most of my home made crackers don't do well when I use a fuse, because they tend to "flare out" through the fuse hole, but totally confined electrical ignitions work well. (ie. NO fuse hole) The problem is that my black powder is not fast (brisant) enough. I never-the-less love the process of experimentation and I thoroughly enjoyed your enthusiasm throughout your demonstrations. Well done Son! _OnlyAnthony
