XXXTENTACION - ? - Album Review 

The lack of music in the last few minutes made this chilling.

The way the music stopped midway through the review made that ending all the potent. It was almost eerie.

Also good call on stopping the music when you were talking about "hope", it's a really respectful move which is much appreciated

I found it kind of eerie and alluring how quiet the end of the video was

I think you hit on what makes X's lyrics so disturbing - while other artists who trade in darkness know the feelings they have are ugly, X seems to want to justify or legitimize these emotions. Artists like Eminem get angry at the audience for thinking that his dark impulses are cool and edgy while X seems to embrace these kinds of judgements.

Why, Mark? Just why would you subject yourself to this? EDIT: After watching, holy crap, this was a great review, one of your best ever, i might say. You really do a good job articulating all your points and deconstructing all the problems with this album, everything was on-point and well-made. Especially that last section without the music, that was top. Fantastic job as always, Mark. It's times like these that I'm really glad I discovered you.

That was... wow. I was going to compare the first half to Pauline Kael, because you're definitely channelling that frosty intensity and ruthless sarcasm, but that ending was stunning and very much its own beast. Thank you.

The song "Changes" off this new album right here: made me laugh because it was so forcely performed with fake sadness. Miraculous Ladybug fan brings more emotion than XXXTENTACTION

After re-listening just today, I found I liked before I go to sleep and Remedy for a Broken Heart because both of those songs portray recovery from mental illness without linking it to a therapist (Aesop Rock) or to a cat (Sage Francis) or even simply dodging recovery in favor of living a more 'interesting' or falsely secure lifestyle (Death Grips). Instead, you have music that you can listen to without thinking and still have the sense of wanting to heal; something to relax to while you finally feel like you can get out of bed by 1 in the afternoon instead of four or five because you can't stand starting the day. Not a lot of rap does this for me, and too much of emo blows itself out of proportion theatrically or, like the worst of X songs, focuses itself deeply in misogyny (much of Alesana-style emo is the worst of that trend). The closest in that genre I can think of would be the softer, more assertive cuts from The Story So Far (which honestly is a much better band than X ever was as an artist), but you can't listen to one artist on repeat forever for an event that happens repeatedly, ideally daily until you've reached that point of being okay. As for your thoughts on Hope, while I don't doubt that what he did was a misguided publicity stunt, railing on it for that seems a little misguided in itself. The song was released just before a show was held where the proceeds went to victims of the parkland shooting, meaning actual, real world action was taken as a result of it. Plus, the song may actually have helped a victim get through a hard day coping with their trauma. That's a good thing, even with the poorest of intentions. I would say that it doesn't belong on the album, seeing as that doesn't further add anything of merit to the entire point of the song, but to say that all it is is a poor attempt to save face ignores what it did outside of contribute to the conversation of enablement. Idk why I typed that much, it's getting late but I figured since everyone was talking about X after his death I'd rewatch some of these videos cause you tend to speak more in depth on music than anyone else and always offer some interesting thoughts, plus it had me thinking about whether to be concerned with what happens to a perpetrator of any kind of harm or trauma aside from neutering a threat, whether or not justice is truly worth seeking in any given situation, or whether it's better to simply focus on the well being of the victim of said abuse and attempting to carve a better path out for everyone. (edit; damn I really typed up a fuckin essay, sorry about that if you took the time to read this but I hope it was worthwhile to read I suppose)

That last part of your review where the music disappears is really something to remember.

To all of ya'll saying "Why did you subject yourself to this" and shit I'd like to remind you that it's all a matter of opinion. Pulse doesn't like it, but some people really do. This music helps & relates to a lot of people. Just because it doesn't relate to 20-some-odd year old pulse or you doesn't mean it doesn't relate to somebody else. it's all a matter of taste and opinion. If you don't like the album then that's fine, just don't go around saying it's the worst thing ever made because a lot of people like this and as a matter of fact if you were to look at the like-dislike ratio on his videos you would discover you are in the minority. so please just chill out

I never listened to x minus some funny meme vids, but i'm pretty sure people gravitate to him more than the other emo/nihilistic rappers/rap groups you mentioned is because he simply makes short hyphy tracks and they don't, I hear his music on these albums have stretched out a bit from just having the bass boost as loud as possible, but I still think that's essentially what it's about

I kind of fuck with the guitars and the hook on NUMB. I mean, the song is literally 90% JUST the guitars and the hook, but they sound decent to me, I can vibe to it. The song with Joey Badass kind of goes hard as well, beat reminds me of MF DOOM. Other than those songs though, terrible fucking album from a terrible fucking human being.

I just like The melodies, some of The singing and some of THE beats but yes it's mostly background music all of The songs are unconsequential, underwritten and basic

As a fan of X, I kinda have to agree. This album is a mess beyond belief. I still see potential in a somewhat decent album in him, but not if he keeps making albums with an identity crisis like this
