Xyloband Hack - Reactivate your Coldplay wristband - Teardown

After a Coldplay Concert your beautiful wristband becomes a memory filled paperweight instead of the psychedelic accessory it once was. This video will show two different methods of reactivating your Xyloband by bypassing all of the circuits and powering the LED band by itself.
The FULL 'Whats Inside' destruction video is HERE: • What's inside Coldplay...
AAAA Batteries: amzn.to/2fa3rzU
Soldering Iron: amzn.to/2fdM97Y
Switches (Bag of 50): amzn.to/2fdMVC9
Its a fun little project to help keep these wrist bands out of the trash, and prolong their life. Its an easy way to learn about electronics or soldering, and can be used as a safety band for Halloween, running at night, or parties.
Where will you use your band?
The camera I used to film this video: amzn.to/1IjlaCD
The Lens I used for this video: amzn.to/1QOXDw2
And this Metabones adapter: amzn.to/1R7Ltic

Speakers and dynamic microphones have a similar internal structure. I image that the frequency emitted is simply a low sound frequency. Speakers act as surprisingly good microphones. They also are extremely cheap.

Your soldering iron isn't hot enough. It took way too long to desolder those power wires, which melts the plastic and could damage components. The tip needs to be replaced too, you can see that the oxidation doesn't let the solder melt instantly on contact. Great project, I love the look of those bands.
@ethanchow9170
@ethanchow9170 7 лет назад
Sam Maghsoodloo yea shouldn't take that long to melt a joint on a single layer board
@knwr
@knwr 7 лет назад
Couldn't you just sand the oxidation off the tip? I suppose they're cheap anyways so it's not a big deal
@paulzaim7900

did you tried to run coldplay songs in the background, maybe its listening to those... or a functiongenerator generating a specific frequency to activate it. they could have microphones instead of a speaker, this could mean the frequency is subsonic

or instead of opening it up at all, get a RF transmitter and try exposing the wristband to different frequencies. for this wristband in particular: "The RF transmitter transmits a 60 kHz-wide signal centered on 869.5 MHz at a power of less than 1 watt, using a Frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulation scheme."

Question: Would it be possible to recreate proprietary signal? How would one go about doing that? Also, why does the radio receiver look like a speaker? If that is what it is, why not just use an antenna?

The "radio receiver" looks a lot like a cheap speaker to me.
@Justin-dy7ep
@Justin-dy7ep 7 лет назад
DoctorBlankenstein it definitely is a speaker. Could a speaker act as an antenna though? Like a mini dish antenna?
@DoctorBlankenstein
@DoctorBlankenstein 7 лет назад
Justin E well, since a speaker is a transducer... Technically is can both play sound, and be a microphone. So I guess it could hear the rhythm pulse of the music, and set off the LEDS. The question then is, why not just use a small microphone. They work better, are smaller and cheaper. So it wouldn't make sense to run the circuit off a speaker used as a mic.
@french_bacon2369
@french_bacon2369 7 лет назад
Because its not a speaker or a microphone. They use radio signals to tell it to turn on and off or change its color.
@DoctorBlankenstein
@DoctorBlankenstein 7 лет назад
French_Bacon do u have a datasheet to share for this "antenna" that looks JUST like a cheap speaker?
@RMoribayashi
@RMoribayashi 7 лет назад
If the signal is not part of the music it's probably an ultrasonic code. Those speakers could easily act as microphones out to 30 or 40khz. I'm disappointed he just bypassed the circuitry and only hacked the LED's. By the way, there are six AAAA batteries in every 9v battery.
