I can't imagine writing even one word without knowing my characters' names! I'm a total name geek. It's one of the first things I decide for a story, probably second to only the general premise of the plot. Also can you do a video on how you're using Aeon, or your favorite features, or... anything, really. I'm considering whether or not to get it and I know you've found it really useful so I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

I learned to assign colors to character when I struggle / don’t have names for my characters. The funny thing is that some of those colors actually became their names!! I chose the color olive for one character now they’re called Oliver! Another example of that is Jade!!

You are simply amazing. How does one stay motivated to write in so many projects, let alone one? Sometimes I imagine Dory's "Just keep swimming," but the writer's remix- ft. the Lil' Engine that Could. "Just keep writing..I think I can, I think I can.." Mostly I just want to thank you for all your videos. Seeing someone work so hard and invest themselves in a field where success isn't defined by promotional ladders, raises, and "the office with a view," is incredibly encouraging. So, thank you!

Hi KATE!!! I just moved out of my family's home for the first time in my life and even though I'm currently settled in my nice new place, I feel sad and lonely and lost about being away from home :( YOUR VIDEOS really, really, REALLY make me feel so much more comfortable, a tiny bit of familiarity I can take with me ANYWHERE! Since this month has already been challenging for me emotionally, with moving out and stuff, I decided to try my best to make it count writing wise, so that I can look back on September as a month where I got shiz DONE. I want to write my first 2 short stories and get feedback from friends/betas. I have a 2019 goal of writing 5 short stories, and sending 3 off to be maybe published! Thanks again for the video. OMG, this was just so entertaining to watch! Having a 2K day AND solving all those other plot & story issues is a big accomplishment!

I love "control my day vlogs" but I've never seen that someone do it with writing! And it was amazing!

I've recently shelved a completed draft that I just can't seem to get through the revision process in a way I like. Not sure if I'm just not at the point in my writing journey to where I can get the story out how I want it but I'll come back to it again. Now I'm digging in and properly outlining my next book with beat sheets and whatnot. I have pages of random notes and bits of scenes that I've jotted down so I wouldn't forget them, so it's all exploring the characters deeper and choosing how to tell their stories now.

On the coffee or not thing, I said suffer 😏 great idea though!

I was going to make September a productive month, but we're already halfway through so I guess it's going to have to be a productive few weeks instead. Also, it might just be me buy I can't write a character if I don't know their name.

This was so much fun, Kate! Glad to see that you were able to get your cappuccino hehe. One of my goals this month is to finish part 1 of my book so I can outline part 2 during preptober and hopefully finish the book by the end of Nanowrimo (but we’ll see if that will actually happen, ha!)

I feel most motivated and creative during the fall and winter. I'm aiming to have my first draft done by the end of the year. I wouldn't necessarily let other people dictate how i work because i don't like feeling forced. I do get distracted easily, so I do like people to motivate me to keep on track. I also let my tarot cards guide, me. I love your channel. I think your great! This channel is a big inspiration for me.

Hey Kate I’ve got a question for you. As a teenage author it’s been hard for me to fit in my writing when I’m in school since here in Ireland you’ve got very important exams to do when your in my year. But I found a solution. I can’t write in school, I can’t write when I’m doing homework and I can’t write when I’m studying so what am I gonna do...I like Brooke get up at 5am and write till 7 before getting ready for school. Since you’ve been doing this a lot longer than I have do you think I’m ruining my sanity but I’m also 23k words into what will be my first novel hopefully within the past two weeks. So I can’t tell if it’s a good thing or a bad thing . Thanks Kate

To me, the idea of letting anyone else name the characters in my books is mortifying. I choose character names incredibly carefully, and a lot of extra meaning and symbolism (and hints) goes into them - they're never _just_ a name.

As someone who is totally obsessed with names. I almost never decide names before i start writing, because i know it would slow me way down. They're very easy to change later, so when i'm writing a first draft i just pick whatever first comes to mind and keep going (but i'm a pantser). Writing "MC" every time there should be a name would be way more jarring to me than just using "Jane" and later replace it to anything else. Then I anxiously list and contemplate names in my downtime like when i'm driving, cooking, showering...

I love the editing style of these videos it's so cute.

My goals for the month are getting my story ready for NaNoWriMo (it’s my first time trying NaNoWriMo so I’m a bit nervous) and to mentally prepare myself for InkTober (an artist month long challenge in October)

This was such a fun vlog to watch, I'd be terrified to do something like this! Although, I do have a homeschooled 5-year old, so it already feels like somebody is telling me what to do all day. ;) I hope you're having a good month of getting shit done! Mildly crazy goal for this month: finish a first draft that I have been trying to finish all year. At the start of September, it needed about 36000 more words, and I've written about 17000 so far, so I'm happy with that!

Good luck with your mega writing month and those massive goals you've set yourself. I too have a massive goal this month, something I been trying to finish for a year now. My wife to be asked me to write her a story as a wedding present to her, I believe mainly to get me to finally finish one lol. The only caveat was that it was to be fantasy... that's it, I have free reign apart from that. Well, it's less than 8 weeks to go now and I've not quite finished what I'm calling my ALPHA DRAFT :O She isn't looking for a final draft manuscript or anything, just a completed story, she's pushing me to achieve my goals, but it's been really hard for me to stay focused annoyingly, my mind's always wandering to other ideas, other projects, but slowly but surely I am muddling through, forcing myself where I have to to get it done. And that is what my goal for September is, to finish my ALPHA DRAFT. Sorry for long meandering post haha. Also just want to add that all these videos have helped keep me motivated since discovering them a little while ago, keep up the good work, in writing and on RU-vid :D

Starting today, I'm hoping to make some more headway on a personal story I'm writing before October, so that I can focus all of my energy on Preptober. I'm also due to start revisions on my Camp novel soon (aah!) This will be my first time ever revising a novel, and I'm super excited! I'm going to try and get shit done the rest of September, even though I didn't have all month (school has been taking up most of my time haha). Watching this vlog lit a fire under my ass, and hopefully I can get a lot done today!

Your videos have gotten me so excited to start writing again. I am famous for starting a project and not finishing it. I’m currently trying to outline a novel that I’m planning on writing during nanowrimo. Hopefully I am able to finish this one. I’m sure you don’t do this but I would love it if you would be a beta reader (in addition to 3 of my best friends) when I finish this project! 😊

September was supposed to be my get shit done month too but things at work are getting hectic. It’s absolute chaos and I can’t focus on my writing at the moment because of it. I was wanting to start a authortube/booktube channel too! But I have terrible anxiety and I keep worrying about work so much.

One thing I cannot do is create last names.. That's what's consistent in my stories lol. Good thing there's no need for them cause it takes place in like a dream world.

I find it difficult to set specific times to say I'm gonna get things done. I find my plans usually get wrecked by the universe so I have to keep them more open. I might be tempted to let others decide for me if I was in a rut or just not motivated to work on my own. Although, I feel like it would be better if it was someone I don't know since people who do know me tend to pick what they know I want. I'm not sure what my short term goals are simply because during October I'm doing Inktober and a couple of read-a-thons. I guess I'd like to record some videos and get one of them edited before Nano so I can start posting to my channel.

The biggest problem I have right now is that I am writing a series and I have a writersblock for the first book and to much ideas for the second book haha

I also struggle a lot with naming characters or just things in my story in general... I believe there’s a random name generator in scrivener... I’m currently outlining a fantasy series to write the first book on NaNoWriMo and writing down any story idea that comes to me for future reference.

How can you even start the book without your mc's name? arrg I would so freak out. I normally build the story as if I'm watching a movie of a segment of their life. The only time I use placeholders are for like a random Janitor, or something. I feel you though, flow state is important, don't want to break it by thinking about inconsequential things.

I just finished and Loved it! And, don't worry, I would have let you have your cappuccino :) My main goal this month is to reach 12K words in my novel before the month ends. And...I'm already at 11,389 words...and I started it on Aug. 27th :') I still can't believe it! When I'm really passionate about something I'm writing, then I write in it almost every day. I'm taking a bit of a break from it to draft some short stories, but...yeah...it's going well! Plus, that's so interesting how you put things like 'singer' and 'female main character' for your characters before you name them. I have a notebook where almost every day I wrote down six male names and six female names, last names included. Sometimes names just seem to fit the character, like there's a character named William in the story I've just started to re-write (I'm a good 782 words into it), and he's kind of an odd person who obsesses over this couple. But the name just seems to fit, you know? (Does that make sense?) But, anyways, I find I'm much better at naming things like characters and story titles, and it's harder for me to come up with plots. Also...I can NEVER envision my characters. I find it's so interesting when some writers say how they can view the story in their head as it's unfolding, and I wish I could do that. What happens for me is, I can hear the characters speaking in my mind, but that's it. It's like there a large brick wall that's separating them and me and I can't "see" the story play out, just hear their voices. It makes me kind of upset and a little envious when I see other writers mention how they can view their story in their minds. But I don't let that upset me! I can still write well, with or without a mental picture! Also...Huge Congrats on reaching 23K subscribers! :D P.S. As usual...LOVED the keyboard typing scenes! And, "My projects are dukin' it out! OH! Duke!" Loved that! I cackled so loud! P.S.S. I'm SUPER excited to read your novellas one day!!
