Wei Wuxian and Wangji's songs are basically their personalities. Wei Wuxian, who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, chooses to have a carefree personality hence why his song is more carefree. Wangji however, feels so much regret that his song reflects that. As for Xue Yang, the Yi city arc was supposed to be a movie which would have delved deeper into it. But Xue Yang, our resident psycho path, definitely fell in love with Xingchen, but since the past was told from A-Qing's point of view, it may have been missed a bit lol

I can’t get over how absolutely phenomenal Xue Yang’s theme is. The absolute talent coming from Zhou kills me, he is one of the greatest singers I’ve ever heard and I listen to his stuff constantly 🥲

Wei wuxian's song is like how wei wuxian retained his sweet smile even after going through so much. And wang ji's is filled with angst

Let me tell you something. In the songs, the creators have complete control over everything, no censorship, nothing. Meaning they really took the time to go gut punching and just go ora ora ora on you Jojo style. They gave you all the gay, all the angst, all the beautiful music and all the tears as one final punch to REALLY tell you: "Yeah you're never climbing out of THIS hole."

Yeah Wangji's theme song got me the first time I read the lyrics. It basically confirms that he really did play the Inquiry during those years after Wuxian's death. What hurts is that he was not asking for his return but he just wanted to know whether he was doing okay... And that last part of the lyrics was after Wuxian's return. He only waited for an answer from beyond as he played Inquiry all those years but suddenly got Wuxian back and I could just feel how relieved he was. It was like he was saying "thank heavens you're back and I'm going to make it right with you" which gave so much more depth to the very first episode when he suspected that Wuxian was back. I will never be over that look and the way he says "Wei Ying" at that particular part 😭 Also I look forward to your reaction to Yanli's song. The second watch of the series became so much more intense after knowing the lyrics to her theme song...

Lan Wangji song is extremely beautiful... I honestly hope you can see it live.... is breathtakingly gorgeous, Wang yibo honestly put his heart out every time he sings it.

i think wei ying's song is perfect for him. he doesn't ever want to talk about the bad things, sometimes he has to, but he'd rather look back on the good. we all know his memory is terrible :') so he'd rather enjoy good wine and good friends while he can and not outwardly express his dark feelings (that he keeps liiiterally bottled up inside him ((resentful energy))). and then there's lan zhan's song...the opposite. i fucking LOVE bu wang so much...lan zhan's mourning the loss of wei ying, he's struggling with the silence around him, he can't find his spirit anywhere even though he plays inquiry for him...and then he gets that burst of energy, that determination to search and search, once he's healed from his punishment. then he FINDS him again...oh god i'm like in tears as i type this. imagine waiting 16 years to find the love of your life again?

I love all the songs, especially the ones from the two leads and Wangxian but Lan Xichen's and Xue Yang's songs have a special place in my heart because of the beautiful composition and ethereal melodies, in addition to the emotional lyrics!!!! I personally think Xue Yang did not ultimately regret his choices in life or felt sorry for what he did nor did he have a desire to change. But I believe that in his last moments or even throughout his life he would wish his next life to be different and for him not to end up doing what he did in this life. That he might have regretted at least how his relationship with Xingchen ended up, the only person to ever treat him normally and kindly and the only person who was ever able to make him feel things he had never felt before, even if he did not understand them. I think that given their history, Xue Yang would not have waited years to kill Xingchen. He probably felt good being with him and did not want to part for him but justified himself to himself as it's to make my revenge worse. I do not think that if Song Lan had not appeared, he would have killed him and A-Qing. I do think he was a sociopath that had no understanding of morality, ethics and even his own feelings. But I also think that he lashed out because he had cornered himself. Him making Xingchen kill innocent people was probably his attempt to bring Xingchen to his level and feel equal to him, maybe even thinking it might make Xingchen understand him better. The way he tried to justify himself and his actions and deception to Xingchen just screamed "I don't understand what I did wrong". He probably really did not understand what is wrong and what isn't or what he feels. Just like a child. He was literally a manchild who had not developed emotionally past a certain point in childhood. His relationship to Xingchen was by no means healthy, his actions immoral and he was an objectively bad person but it is not difficult to see where his personality came from and what his motives are. I understand why he acts the way he does but do not really sympathize or condone it. But I do think he had feelings and he probably did want things to go differently in his next life.

Wangjis song reminds us that he lived all those 13/16 years that Wei Wuxian was dead. He had to endure that loss most of his life. Wuxian died tragically and horribly, but he died and he didn’t live all those years, Wangji did. That is my take on the song differences

Xue Yang's actor got Zhou Shen to sing his character's song, and he is a really fantastic singer! Unrelated to the Untamed, I suggest you listen to some of his songs too, on youtube there should be also some of his performances on talent shows

It was when I heard XiaoZhan sing that I realised he had me for life. And Wangji’s song is just...*queue gay yearning*

when the flute comes in after that epic break in bu wang... I CRY EVERY SINGLE TIME. This soundtrack is a masterpiece.

First of all, Bad idea to start with Jiang Cheng's song. It is, in my opinion, the most painful one. And like, if you didn't feel sympathy for him after finishing The Untamed, you will after listening to that song. I actually love what they did for Wei Wuxian's song. To me it sounds very hopeful. At some parts the lyrics are heartbreaking, but then he talks about the good things again. And to me, that's what Wei Wuxian is. So many bad things happen in his life, but he always tries to focus on the positive side of things, to focus his energy on those who he loves, and that's what the song sounds like to me. (also, I'm sure others will mention it as well, but. Listen to the musical flute part in the middle of wwx's song, and then the melody of lwj's song)

YES, ALL THE TEARS. Xue Yangs song is not actually sung by the actor, singer Huang Cheng Du blessed us with his celestial voice in this case, but mostly the character songs are sung by the actors and actresses. I actually didnt realize the difference in depth, shall we say, between Wei Wuxians and Lan Wanjis songs, but only because when I heard them I always found fitting that Wei Wuxians melody and lyrics would be more 'carefree' and not really relying on the mf angst and sadness that was his first life, just as he was as a character. Not to say that its frivolous or anything, but I think it really shows how both of them felt and experienced their stories. Bu Wang is a masterpiece and I swear I could go on and on about it, but the rest of the OST is just as wonderful. Thank you again for sharing your feelings with us 💜 see you later for the other half

i love how lwj's instrument zither(which is also named wangji) is mentioned in wwx's song and emperor's smile in lwj's.

The amount of love and detail in this series is beyond! Like when the Gusu kids were on the roof on the first episode and Lan Sizhui is the only one to recognize the song (he was the only one who have heard it before, from WWX). Also, when LWJ brings the Emperor's Smile for WWX without breaking the curfew They did not show it, but with this song they are basically throwing the longing to your face again and again. I am still enjoying all those little details hidden everywhere.

Want more angst? Jiang cheng’s song is called hating separation. Yanli’s name also means hating separation. Synonyms,,, yay,, edit: yes!!! they did Wen Qing and her song soooo much justice!!! I keep talking about this everywhere like a madman but in China there are two 'styles' of language if you will: normal chinese (such that you can understand the lyrics just by hearing/seeing them) but also an old traditional form which vibes like your speaking in poems/proverbs. Wen Qing's song is written COMPELTELY in the "traditional version" so it kinda forces the song to become a poem? (like there are no actual sentences if that makes sense?) and it makes the song THAT much more elegant and really emphasises that her character was "well read" (for lack of better wording) - and the extra time that it would've taken for the composers to write that instead of just writing a normal chinese poem? The dedication. And like also props to the translator for translating Qing's song because if im not mistaken that stuff is difficult to understand even for your normal Chinese citizen

Wei Wuxian's theme is just him talking about how most of his favorite memories are of Lan Zhan: Fighting the most beautiful person in Gusu and tracing the cloud pattern with his fingertips and how he was stunned by him. Censorship was like we can't do any of that ya know gay stuff and the showrunners and singers and songwriters were like well then we're gonna do it anyway.

These songs except for a very small handful are actually the Actors singing. Also the second song you listened to Xiao Xīngchen’s Song is sung by Song Lan (Li Bowen) and A-Qing (I forget her name forgive me) AND if you watch the live version Xiao Xīngchen (Song Jiyang) is fan dancing. Enjoy the tears

The funny thing is, WWX's song is actually heartbreaking because it is soo deceptive. You have to listen to it knowing how the character is. He masks a lot of painful experiences with smiles and laughter. No one really pays attention to WWX's pain and it's often overlooked by other characters because he masks it so well behind laughter. And so, when you listen to his character song, you also subconsciously fall into the trap of thinking it's not too deep, it's carefree, it's a fun song...just like WWX. Then you really hear the lyrics and realise just how much pain he hides in the colourful melody. It's beautifully tragic, much like his life. Then there's LWJ. Just wow. There is no explaining this one. The pain, regret, longing...it's all there straight away. Absolutely chilling. Both songs are a masterpiece for different reasons. I absolutely love them both.

I have yet to find another series where the cast who were supposedly “unknown” that are as multi talented as the cast of The Untamed. Wonderful actors, dancers and singers. Join this with the music director and screen writers, no wonder this series won so many awards.

God i love these songs. Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan singing will forever destroy me with their songs. But as much as all of these make me feel and cry, Yanli's song is always the one that gets me most tearing up. I can't wait for you to react to it. It destroys me every time. In the best possible way.

Idk if you noticed but Lin Hai the composer used a snippet of the same melody in both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s songs, namely 10:55 and 14:28 in this video

I love how the flute, a symbol of Wei Wuxian, is present in almost every other characters song. He left an impact on everyone. Ha. End me I have two hours of math to go :)

the difference between the two songs shows the emotions both felt for each other. WuXian's song is a song about pure admiration and love while WanJi's song is about regret and patience. WWX doesn not and probably will never understand completely how LWJ felt because LWJ had to see the person he love go missing and not be able to contact basically not even sure if he was dead or not for 11 years while WWX discovered his love after his reincarnation.

I love many songs in the Untamed, they are beautifully done with very good lyrics. I cried when watching the official MV, the MV is perfect

What I loved was that some of the references (eg WWX's song) and portrayals are so drawn from the novel, not even the drama. And for Wangji's song, that whole concept of playing inquiry with no answer T_T followed by a hopeful ending. *Chef's kiss* for all the lyrics that capture these characters' journeys and feelings so beautifully. PS Zhou Shen (from Xue Yang's song) is AMAZING. Literally the only iteration of Xue Yang that I can emotionally resonate with at all. (ETA: I personally don't see Xue Yang as in love with Xiao Xingchen, more like an unhealthy relationship dynamic...)

Haha, this ost is godly. I also love how this album was an introduction to a lot of chinese elements in music to new fans of chinese entertainment that the west isn't that exposed to that much. This style of music is a style that the Chinese music industry really loves to do. The person who sang Xue Yang's theme (Zhou Shen or Charlie Shen) is the one big and famous Chinese singerd that was on the album. He's known for his feminine, ethereal, transparent voice that matches classical/chinese element songs. A lot of these lyrics explain a lot more aspects about their character that was probably more apparent in the novel than in the drama. Honestly, to fully understand the whole story, one must go through ALL the adaptations! Not to mention they also have fanmade songs and OST from the audio dramas LOLOL

Oh, Xue Yang's song murders me. It just, takes my heart and stomps it to death. But honestly, that's because of the novel mixed with lots of other versions. Xue Yang's whole story and life is just one giant tragic mess. I love my murder gremlin. Also, Lan Wangji's theme is also one that kicks me and makes me suffer for sixteen years. It's brutal in the ways it touches on things only the novel really dips into. But when you're in the know, oh it's painful.

Xue Yang and the Yi City songs hit so different and wait until you get to the Nie brother song and Wanji song hurts so much when I heard the first note I was already curling up

Dude I love the lyrics “Good and evil ultimately become clear; Xingchen has ascended to heaven” in Xue Yangs song because it implies that once it becomes clear that Xingchen is “good” and Xue Yang is “evil”, it’s already too late and Xingchen is dead 😭 It’s like a slapping reminder that Xue yang is still an unforgivable villain, amidst this character song that cultivates pity and a deeper understanding of his perspective

The first time I heard Xue Yang's theme after my friend linked me to that vid I actually about started crying. I finished ep 39 early in the evening, my friend linked me to the theme, and I just could NOT move on to ep 40 onwards until the next day. Still not over any of it. And Zhou Shen, the singer for the song... WHEW--the irony is I watched him be a mentor on a Chinese idol survival competition before I watched The Untamed and linked my friend (whose favorite theme is also Xue Yang's--mine i as well) to Zhou Shen's performance because it was breath-taking then a few days later she linked me to this and I realized its the same singer, I couldn't stop laughing at the irony adfhshfd

“Bu wang” is a song or yearning, regret, waiting, hopeful, and desperation.

I was waiting for Bu Wang to come up...the yearning! I also think WWX's song suits him, even if it's less dramatic, since the core of his character is someone who keeps smiling through every misfortune. I haven't listened to all of the character songs yet, so thanks for the react! I feel like the show had to do a speed run through the Yi City arc, so Xue Yang's song (and his character arc) might become clearer after reading the book.

One of the things I was pretty upset about your Yi City reaction was how you were pretty focused on seeing Xue Yang as crazy hot guy, which he is, but like, in that, you couldn't see how complicated his character is, and that was the emotional gut punch the Yi City arc gives to everyone and I was pretty upset about it. It IS actually really obvious and I had to cool off for a few weeks because I was like, really mad about it, but I'm fine now. But anyway, seriously go rewatch it and consider some stuff, because we don't love Xue Yang just for being crazy hot guy. THIS is why we love him.

Welcome to the world of Zhou Shen! (Xue Yang's song, he's the singer). Of all the The Untamed songs, Xue Yang's and the Nie Brothers' song are my favourites. The Nie Brothers' song is sung by Ayanga, whom I love as well. Both have amazing voices and really cute personalities, and are really good-looking ^_^ The Nie Brothers' song MV is basically just a long trailer for The Fatal Journey movie (or a summarized version kinda)

I was waiting for this - and there will be a part two!! Can't wait to see the rest. I've actually listened to this album, but haven't looked up the lyrics to every song. So cool to see them at the same time.

The Yi City arc is more detailed in the novel. You will understand XY's change in the novel as the drama didn't have time to delve into all the exchanges that took place between XXC, A-Qing and XY.

Yup, Bu Wang. Told ya. Even though Xiao Zhan's voice is the better among the lot (not including the other professional singers), WWX's character song IS like WWX (bubbly, confident, a bit cheeky... I mean, I can see why they wouldn't have it be a serious, dignified tale) - Bu Wang takes the cake. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Xiao Zhan's singing, and I could give you a lot of links to hear him sing more... but you're going to hear some more anyway if you're interested, they're all over the net LOL. Still, in the interest of making the difference clear... they're singing a duet in DDU that's not related to The Untamed in any way. You can hear how sure of himself is WYB in singing the rap parts, and how XZ likes the harmonics better. I don't know if this can be considered a spoiler for you, so please don't read before confirmation that it's okay for you to do so: About Xue Yang... there was no middle part that you missed. His actions and thoughts are open for interpretation, but what I understood from it after watching the drama a few times and reading the novel is that he viewed Xiao Xingchen as his way towards salvation and humanity, even though he did not understand it nor his feelings. Xiao Xingchen always treated him like a friend, maybe even a little brother, so it was the first time in his life that he felt human kindness and connection. I don't agree with the shippers, and this is my opinion, but I don't think Xue Yang had any romantic feelings towards Xiao Xingchen, but admiration and familiar, platonic love that his little sociopathic affection-deprived mind could not comprehend. He was obsessed and highly dependent on this one person in the whole world that treated him like a person, so he didn't know what to do once his toy was taken away from him.
