Born in Ghana and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Yaa Gyasi has written a debut work that embraces her extended world in all its complexity. Tracing the descendants of two sisters torn apart in eighteenth-century Africa, Homegoing is a riveting, kaleidoscopic novel about race, history, ancestry, love, and time. Stretching from the wars of Ghana to the coal mines of the American South to twentieth-century Harlem, Gyasi’s tale captures the troubled spirit of our nation.
This program was recorded on Saturday, Oct 29, as part of Chicago Humanities Festival's Fallfest/16: Speed.

It was such an easy and interesting reading. My husband visited Ghana a while back and I almost could see his descriptions and her stories alive as I read this book. It was amazing.

We learn about both the traditional and modern forms of slavery in Ghana. I wrote my master thesis on modern slavery and used Ama Darko's Beyond the Horizon! So, we continue to study slavery.

southern Africa never experienced slavery my sweet darling west Africa did and it's taught in every school even Arabic schools.every GHnNAIJA student knows but I can't speak for the French speaking countries.

@@bismarkadu-num5834, while it was primarily in West Africa, Angola is an example of a Southern African experience of enslavement. Then there's the Arab practice of enslaving our folks from East Africa.

British governor George McLean married a Ghanaian woman although he has a British wife called leticia London but the sad part is Ghanaian woman name was not recorded and British white wife dies of heart attack.. sorry her parents doesn’t learn about the history, I grow up in cape coast and I do liearn about the slave history. The cape coast castle was built by the Europeans and it’s has nothing to do with the locals Africans. It’s a great novel
