HASHEM MELECH
------------------------------
The time of Chodesh Elul and the Yamim Noraim is one of the great highlights of the Jewish year.
The acronym ascribed to Elul is ‘Ani l’dodi v’dodi li’ (Song of Songs). It translates to ‘I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me’. This is a time of unique closeness between Hashem and his beloved Jewish People.
As Elul brings us closer to the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, we increase in our observance of Mitzvot as we strive to come closer to Hashem at the time when He comes close to us - ‘Hamelech BaSadeh!’ We focus on increasing in our acts of kindness, our Torah learning, as well as improving our relationships with the people around us. We focus all these efforts around the belief that Hashem is our ultimate King - the King of all Kings. The Mitzvot serve as His guide for us to make the most of our lives.
The belief that Hashem is the ultimate Melech and King means that there is order in life, everything has a reason and we all serve a special, unique and designated purpose in this world. Everything is ordained by the King for the ultimate good. If we look deeply into the subtle messages of our lives, we can often find Hashem’s Guiding Hand pushing us to become our greatest selves through the myriad experiences of life.
----------------------------
Hashem is a Kind and Forgiving King. As we approach the Days of Judgement, we engage in the beautiful process of Teshuva - Repentance. Through this process we seek to repair our relationship with Hashem, as well as our relationships with the people in our lives.
The theme of Hashem’s Kingship in the world can be found throughout our davening on the Yamim Noraim, as we re-align ourselves with the Creator of the World.
At the apex of our davening on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, we recite the powerful and moving ‘Unetaneh Tokef’ composed by Rabbi Amnon of Mainz. Sensitized to how our lives hang in the balance, we proclaim in unison the three things that can avert the harsh decree - Teshuva, Tefilla and Tzedakka (Repentance, Prayer and Charity).
The Rambam (Maimonides) teaches that the greatest form of Teshuva is when one is placed in the exact same situation as when one previously sinned and because one has worked on one’s self, one chooses not to sin. This is a sign of complete Teshuva.
----------------------------
We hope you enjoyed the video as much as we enjoyed making it! Next time you watch it - look out for all these themes and lessons and use it as a dynamic way to learn with your friends and family.
May you and your family be inscribed in the Book of Life. Wishing you a Ketiva v’Chatima Tova!
Love YaChad and Yeshiva College!
