This really is very helpful and clarifies a problem I was having. Every time I was nude on my sailboat ladies would yell, "NICE DECK SALON" and I would respond "Thanks but my name is not Salon". Now I realize it was a failure to communicate! 😳

@@trippontwowheels Boise Idaho area. I love it here... Lots of great riding spots close and a lot of variety in scenery. Not much for sailing though other than trailerable lake boats lol.

"AT THE PRICE POINT" it's hard to beat a Hunter. I looked at a lot of boats while shopping. Any Jeanneau or Beneteau that was in the Hunter price range was more worn/used. Almost every Hunter I looked at was near pristine. You could read into that on why. (my Hunter has a factory installed 18 gallon additional auxiliary fuel tank)

I would love to see you talk about Catalina sailboats, my favorite is a 350. I feel like they hold their value and are solid built vessel. I just sold my Hunter 420, it was a easy boat to live on, always liked center cockpits, before that a Islander Freeport 41, again center cockpit. Down sizing.... Enjoy your videos Dave

Seems like increased sunlight (raised or regular salon) combined with full length canvas would provide the most indoor/outdoor living space

Chris I would not complain about either boat. I do know that Hunter seems to have that it can't cross oceans. Me I don't know about that and I would just go anyway lol. Thanks again for a great video, I want to catch up with you for a chat but have been very busy with family and business things.

Lol was going to point out both of your choices are "raised salon" and not deck salon. Moody or Sirus do actual deck salon which allows a 40 to space like a 50 and so on and so forth. A true ds with galley up pretty much puts any of these two boats to shame

Hello Chris. I was wondering if you had a video that goes over the total costs of owning a boat as a second residence, 100k sailboat 40ft or less, a permanent slip (if there are any left), insurance, maintenance, and whatever else it all amounts to. I’ve seen insurance can be tough to get with limiting sailing experience, and as I mentioned it seems like ever marina I have looked at has a waiting list. Is it even feasible to have a boat as a second residence that can compete in cost to just a modest home near some water somewhere, or is boating really just as expensive? Thanks for your consideration.
@ChasingLatitudes
@ChasingLatitudes 2 года назад
Usually far less than home costs, depending on the vessel you can assume somewhere from 15k a year and up for costs, this has several factors such as vessel, location, marina and so on but usually it's far cheaper living than land living.

Cmon the hunter interior is clearly shot with a wide angle or manipulated to look bigger. It almost looks stretched in some frames lol

@@ChasingLatitudes Still it would be better to have normal perspective images instead of wide angle. I'm thinking that you found these images out on the internet and that is what was available to you. One other issue is that for the Jeanneau the fresh water tank is the 94 gallons while the fuel is the 34. I wonder if the fuel tanks are roughly comparable since the Hunter is running a 54 HP vs a 40 on the Jeanneau. I suspect the Jeanneau has less resistance going through the water so it will push the boat as fast or faster under power, no? Thanks for your perspective in all these videos.

Salon ? or Saloon ? A beauty or consultant room or a room on the deck of a vessel?

Ha ha, capt Q responding in an oblique fashion. Check out his newest - he's praising the steeply raked bow, noting the new vertical bows only gain you X feet of water line, and concludes with "who cares". Tell you what, compare the sail characteristcs and perhaps then you'll find out why lots of people care I find the entire debate rather amusing. The bottom line is that boats from the early fiberglass era simply cannot sail (well) Why not? Because the sharp stiletto shapes that weren't possible (or easily formed) with wood allowed designers to reject previous convention in search of 'space age' solutions ( for thousands of years, wooden boats followed a basic box shape convention, relying on form stability) But fiberglass allowed all kinds of extreme shapes, many following 50s car design principles of Harley earl who emphasized lower & longer Given the target customers for these old high end boats, how many were sailors vs those who wanted a great looking boat at the club? Shit, Q himself admits he prefers beauty, reflecting his and his customers desires from that era You add in lack of basic function, then age, then refit costs and you get: Financial stress Sailing stress, lack of sleep, relaxation Potential physical injury from dicking around with broken equip Catastrophic failure - random thru hull, etc Add it up and these factors mean a slow tedious passage with the possibility of captain error and some serious run ins tempting fate

@@ChasingLatitudes I get where he's coming from - it's hard not to love the looks of either a 1960s corvette or Sparkman But compared to the new C8 corvette or oyster 495 (yes, twin helms and all), really? In some ways he's just reliving his glory years. Those boats were bought to impress back in the day - and he faithfully sold them to willing customers But promoting tired old money pits as deals? I feel sorry for randy - I'd put money down he's gonna walk from his project boat

@@ChasingLatitudes I have enjoyed Capt Q videos, and since I'm just getting into sailing and in the "learning phase" I've learned a bit of terminology, etc. But after watching many of these Chasing Latitude videos you make Chris, I know in 3 - 4 years I'll be buying a 2010 - 2015 or so Hunter or equivalent, so I don't waste my time on Capt Q vids anymore.
