Usually you can also open the encoder and clean it/retension the spring contact. That is enough to restore good functionality. But hey for such a cheap price for a new one is hard to resist. Good job!
Mine does the same from time to time, mostly when it's cold. I've had to replace the VFO encoder and that was not as cheap of a part but the hardest part was that the encoder I bought didn't come with the connector, so I had to splice on the old cable. For 3x as much I could have bought a genuine Yaesu part, which was the same exact one I used plus the connector.
It is good to know that I am not the only one to have this type of problem. Thanks Steve for sharing about the 891. I had given thought to getting one at one point. 73 Kevin
@@hamradiowithkevin sorry, my problem with the 891 was that I dropped it and bent the knob... "TO error" I also shorted the antenna port and had to replace a Resistor inside as a result. I'm really good at inflicting damage on myself and my gear... oh, and if it's got wheels, I can get it stuck!
Great soldering Job done, Kevin. I watched every move of your Fingers very carefully. This isn't the 1st Time you been doing this kind of work. I am glad the FT-857 is back to Life again. 73 de YFUG 💯👍🙋♂️
