Here is my review on the FT-60R after owning and using it for five years. It's still a great radio! Just time for me to upgrade a bit.
The antenna I mention in the video is the Diamond SRH77CA which is available here: amzn.to/2lhC4XR

I appreciate the suggestions so far! Anyone have experience with the new Kenwood TH-D74A? I know it's pretty spendy, but looks to do all I want (and more, frankly). Might fit the bill as my main HT for the next five years or so.

Replying to this (WAY after the fact) for people to read and get my thoughts. I own two D74s and I love them. I have used them for learning, tests, data transfer in a variety of ways, I'm working on programming projects with them, and I think it's hard to find a radio that compares to what the D74 can do. HOWEVER, I have been interested in a radio I can leave in my truck that does 2m and 70cm well as a way to match most of the comms for my d-710 I have installed. I frequently go out and use the truck to x-band repeat from my HT to a local repeater or simplex net. The d74 works as an HT but it's delicate and I don't like taking it out places I could damage it or destroy it when I don't need all the capability it offers. Baofeng TX is so dirty, I have basically given up on trying to use them for anything serious. So I wanted a 2m/70cm HT that's higher quality and DURABLE. I got the FT-60R, car charger, and AA battery adapter for just that. Works perfect, and I am less worried about damaging it if I'm out and just using simplex. -KE0SBF

Other reasons why I like the FT-60R: - has a mechanical on/off switch ... when off, it's off! - has a squelch knob, rather than a menu selected squelch; - can be used with standard AA batteries.

Your comment about the speaker mike plug: Yaesu actually solved that problem. You may not have noticed, but there is a loop attached to the speaker/mike cord about 1 and 1/2 inches a from the plug. That is designed to go over the control knob to hold the mike cable verticals and tight. It takes the strain off the plug. When using it you simply have to punch “lock” to keep the cord movement from shifting frequency. It works well and makes sense. I didn’t know what that loop was for until I saw your video and thought about the issue. Thanks for posting a good and helpful video.

The Yaesu FT60R is a truly a great little radio. It is solid and very affordable for the price. Speaker volume is great,I’ve walked the neighborhood and used it without any problems. I’ve been a ham since the early 70s and really enjoy using this radio.73s.

I like having the squelch knob. It is helpful when using it in the car as I drive around. I use an MFJ-1717S 15.25" antenna and also have a mini mag mount for the car.

Thanks, wondering what you’d recommend after four years. Upgrading from UV5R and looking at HT for digital. Allstar seems to be the local digital connection from here (Hawaii) to the mainland. Not sure how that compares to Dstar, DMR, etc. I have zero digital radio experience

excellent radio... i have personally used the FT60R with a tape measure antenna and i had a 3 to 4.5 decibite audio gain with... this radio works well with a 30foot Jpole as well. kf5dmc

Hi, Tony, great review. My FT-60 is actually my newest handheld. I also have the Rat Shack HTX-202 and -404 and a Kenwood TH-25AT. All are great rigs, regardless of age. Keep the vids coming! 73 de Mike K3CXG

Very nice review, I agree with everything - except one point: You can turn WIRES off in a menu, and use the 0 button as a means to play a DTMF sequence (for echolink).

Great video! I have a question for you. What would be the next radio to the Yaesu FT-60R, if you think this radio may not be produced sometime in the future? Thank You.

Read your manual and you can solve one of your gripes. You can disable WIRES so it doesn't activate if you hit the "0" button. It won't transmit the tone on key-up.

I have had my FT-60 for about 11 going on 12 years and today I ended up going to HRO and bought myself a new radio to replace mine. The radio I purchased is the Yaesu FT-70D which took me a couple of hours to figure out but it seems like it is going to be a nice radio to replace my FT-60. One plus to it I have found and is a reason for my purchasing it was that you can use the same external microphone as well as the same antennas that work on a FT-60 on the FT-70. Just thought I would share. 73 KG6YWB.

I upgraded my FT-60R to an FT-2DR, much recommended upgrade, even if you don't want to use the digital on it. The Analog is amazing on it! 73s de K8GLX

Nice radio and a big upgrade compared to FT60R. I have been looking at the FT-2DR and ICOM ID-51A . I can't make my mind up as to which I want!

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been looking at that one and it's definitely on my list. I've seen varied reviews on it, though. That said, the price does seem good!

I think you'll have that with any radio though, I've seen mixed reviews on everything, the major issue I have with it now is getting used to the touch screen. It has no buttons at the bottom, but that's just a learning curve and the more and more I use it the more I get used to it :)

The upgraded FT-1X might also be something to look at, as it is a little smaller both physically and it's $-resistance;) I enjoy that radio a lot, especially the APRS Features, BUT make sure to get the new X Version, the GPS on the old one was crap. To of "my elmers" have the FT-2 and are very happy about it :)

I have some Yaesu radios, a mobile and a base, but the only HT's I have are Baofengs. I wouldn't mind getting the FT3DR to match the digital mode that my other radios do. But it is not very high on the list, I just got into HF radio, haven't even made my first contact yet, so my attention will be taken for quite some time I think.

Hi Tony. As you pointed out, Yaesu FT-60R came out in 2004, it's almost 15 years ago. Does Yaesu have any newer, upgrading radio on the market now?

Just got my Tech license and bought an FT-60r. I receive repeaters well but transmit is poor at my house location in the foot hills of San Diego. I have the recommended Diamond SHR77CA but you mentioned some sort of J-pole antenna. Would the J-pole help me in a home base situation with the FT60r? ... can you elaborate on that a bit? Do I need to get an SWR meter to make sure I'm matched up to the radio? Thanks Mike, KM6KWG

I have two BaoFeng HTs, but after using my Yaesu mobile 2meter, I've been eyeballing these HTs. I assume this uses an SMA connector for the antenna? The only thing holding me back is the lack of two meter and 440 repeaters within 5 watt distance lol.

I thought the FT-70DR was the newer mode version, it can do digital. The only con I see about it is that the battery life isnt very good. Might need to buy an extra battery or two.

I have no experience in this field, but are little Hams like this an effective way to communicate with a friend who is located 20 miles away from me? Or is a repeater required? Thanks!
@hipal2271
@hipal2271 5 лет назад
Axe and Timber for communication without a license you need either a CB or FRS. You have to have a license to talk on any other bands. The GMRS doesn’t require a test however you would still have to register for a license with the FCC.
@chrispierce2942
@chrispierce2942 5 лет назад
So to answer the question, yes you would need to use a repeater. Simplex, which is radio to radio is line of sight based. With 2 of these you might get 7 to 10 miles without a repeater depending on conditions and these radios require at least a tech license for transmitting

Man I don't think I can adequately describe how much I HATE this radio. It was my first ham radio recommended to me by HRO staff about eight years ago. To this day I STILL have to refer to the manual almost every single time I use it. I've seen tons of reviews on how easy it is to program. I do not find that to be true at all. If you push the wrong button, or push the correct button for too long or not long enough it goes into some weird mode that you did not intend. Better have the manual handy to find out how to get back to where you were. I have learned to NEVER take this radio ANYWHERE without the MANUAL. My manual is dog eared and filled with paperclip bookmarks. Even at that, the manual sucks. I found several on-line that are much better and saved me from just throwing this thing in the trash. (No I would not give it away as I would not want anyone else to deal with this frustration). Thank goodness for the Chirp software. It is the only reason I still use this radio at all. I now have it programmed with my local repeaters and if I am very careful with the radio, turn it on, tune to the desired freq and set squelch, it works OK. God forbid you bump a button though - better grab the manual. By contrast I also have a Yaesu FT1900 mobile unit, which was a breeze to program. Had it mounted in my jeep and sat in the garage one evening and got everything done with no issues and it didn't take that much time and I've never had a problem with it going into some funky mode by mistake. I don't even know where the manual to the FT-1900 is, I've never needed it. Heck, I even found the Baofeng BF-F8HP easier to program and operate than the FT-60, but of course it's TX/RX is inferior. I'm sure many will disagree with me and tell me how great this radio is yada yada yada, but that's why they make and sell different radios. YMMV.

I recently picked up a used FT-60R. For a little while I did have to refer to the manual, until I had "memorized" a few most-often used (by me) functions. If you bump a button, simply turning the rig off and back on resets back to where you were, though yes I do wish there was a "back" or "undo" "oops" key. First thing I did was to buy a programming cable and used CHIRP to quickly set up few hundred mem channels and bank layouts. Since the op manual is available as a PDF at Yaesu's site, I have a copy of it (and a Quick Reference card I made up) on my iPhone and iPad if I need it. True for all my tech manuals for ham and professional video gear.

@@crvideo2409 I am 100% positive it is fully operator error. But having said that......Na. I'm done with it. Happened again this weekend. As soon as I turned it on it was in some stupid mode that I did not recognize so I had to stop driving, grab the radio and use two hands to look at it and figure it out just to get it to the simplex channel I needed. I do have Chirp and a cable for it but almost never use them. I have no problems programing memories in this radio. Might have been a little wonky when I first got it but I actually like programing by hand. I never take it anywhere without the manual. Conversely, I pulled my 8 year old FT1900 mobile out of a drawer after three + years, programed it up with local repeaters and have been chatting on it for months without ever needing to look at the manual and without it ever getting into a mode or function that had me scratching my head. So I am done with the FT-60. I won't throw it away and probably wont sell it. I will keep it as a last resort tool. The first thing I did when I got back from this weekend's wheeling trip was to order a FT-70. I've had it for a couple of days now and it's not perfect but at no time have I been left thinking, "WTF just happened and how do I get out of this mode?" With the FT-70 there are really only three things I would like, a dedicated on/off/volume knob, a dedicated sql knob and a dedicated lamp button. However, having said that, so far I have learned that once I set the sql I have not needed to adjust it. Same for the volume, it's a tow button exercise to adjust the volume but that too has been more or less set and forget. This might change once I am using it in a mobile environment. Time will tell and finally, I believe I can program p1 or p2 to do the lamp function. If nothing else, the FT60 has been a learning experience for me. Take care and stay healthy. :-)
