The FT-897D is a rugged, innovative, multiband, multimode portable transceiver for the amateur radio MF/HF/VHF/UHF bands. Providing coverage of the 160-10 meter bands plus the 6 m, 2 m, and 70 cm bands, the FT-897 includes operation on the SSB, CW, AM, FM, and Digital modes, and it's capable of 20-Watt portable operation using internal batteries, or up to 100 Watts when using an external 13.8-volt DC power source.
The new FT-897"D" version includes coverage of the U.S. 60-meter (5 MHz) band, along with the 0.5 ppm TCXO Unit, at no additional charge!
Took a trip to Babler State Park to test out portable radio setup, made about 10 contacts. Love ham radio

Great video of your portable operation and Super Antenna MP1DX at the park. It looks like a wonderful place to operate. Adding your video to the Super Antenna youtube page.

+Super Antenna Thanks! I will say for the easiest, fastest, lightest portable setup the mp1 is my go-to. I also left a review on Amazon of the antenna....I will continue to make videos similar to this, as I enjoy watching other people's videos as well. thanks.

I know this video is bit dated but it's always fun to have activate outdoors. Even better at a place with some elevation. I agree, when I use my Yaesu at home, some bands are completely unusable, electrical noise is just all over the place. Really nice to see someone having fun with activation outdoors!

I used to live in a 50s sub-division that had overhead high-voltage lines @ 30-40'. I had a transformer next door, and 2 poles in my back yard that surrounded me 180 deg. I had relentless QRM on my FT-897 that eventually contributed to me going off the air. I now live on 2 acres with underground power and have fallen in love with my 897 again. I'm considering QRP for the field but love the power and familiarity of my 897. Thanks for the video.

Wow loved this, I run the 897 and the 857 both D's. Great radios every time I watch your vids I get the urge to go portable as I only run mobile at present so I'm working to setup in a local park only 200 meters from QTH. Thanks for all the vids don't stop Tom, well done. ZL1MY

It’s quiet because you’re outside and you’re not picking up dirty electricity from your house wires

I got the MP1 about 3 months ago, and I love it, it breaks down into an incredibly small size. I use the supplied tripod. I have no problem making contacts with the Yaesu FT-891 and MP1 and even made it from Ireland to Canada on 20 meters @100 watts about a month ago. I have not used the 80 meter coil yet, when I go out portable it's usually during the day so I wouldn't be using the 80 M band. The Antenna is also very quick and easy to set up, when I don't want to use my EFHW and mess with trees the MP1 is perfect. It's a great high quality product, I love it. It has greatly exceeded my expectations.

You did a great job with the video. Your portable station is well thought out.....except for the clock. Hi Hi I liked that you used a resonant antenna with radials. Using only 60 watts saves on the battery and is less than ½ S unit down from 100 watts. You did a good mix of showing how to assemble a station properly as well as making a few contacts along the way. I think the FT 987(D) is one of the best, “One radio do all transceivers.” I like QRP and use an Elecraft KX2, but no way am I getting rid of my FT-897D. Keep up the great videos. Barry, KU3X

I can tell your from the city, lol, You say Missouri correctly.. I'm a relocated Missourian, living in Virginia. I just passed my Technician and I'm studying for my general. I'm thinking about getting a FT-897. It's nice to hear your comments about it's performance in the field. I camp with Kids and sometimes we're in the mountains. I want a rugged radio that I can depend on. Thanks for the video.

Awesome! Congrats. You can google this, "FT 897 manual" to get the manual and start reading. There are a lot of menu items. Just remember menu item #75 is the power. : ) You hold down the F button for a second or two then you rotate through the menu items. I picked this radio as my first because it basically covers EVERYTHING. It does it all and it's rugged. Good choice.

That would be a good setup for running a NPOTA activation.
@tommyseacat3580
@tommyseacat3580 8 лет назад
+Ham Radio K0PIR Yes, absolutely, as soon as I get some free time, that is happening. But, this was a "state" park. would that count as NPOTA?
@HamRadioAdventures
@HamRadioAdventures 8 лет назад
Nope, it needs to be on the official list. Visit npota.arrl.org/ Get setup in LOTW too if you haven't. When creating a station location in LOTW (TQSL) there's a dropdown box and you can choose the park you activated. It's very easy. A little daunting at first.
@tommyseacat3580
@tommyseacat3580 8 лет назад
+Ham Radio K0PIR No, I mean, does a State park count on the list of "National Parks on the Air" or does it have to be a "National" park.? Thanks.
@HamRadioAdventures
@HamRadioAdventures 8 лет назад
+Tommy N As an activation no it won't count, but the contact you made to the NPOTA station counts toward your chaser status. I believe the list only includes federal land. Some units on the list are national trails, national monuments, etc.

Have a 897 and a dozen 7.2Ah batteries i need to string together. I took mine to a cabin in VT and yes was much quieter... until i plugged in a laptop. Everything is noise with these apparently. 73! KD2GMB
@hamradiocq
@hamradiocq 7 лет назад
Yes the thing is super heavy to lug around right? To be fair, my ICOM 7300 also picks up a lot of noise, the laptop power cord does it mostly, then the fluorescent lights. I'm glad I still have the 897 to toss around though.

No. There is a voltage readout.
@gaddogabetti740

the noise is thermic noise generated by the ac transformation to dc, I would suggest you to get a really high quality power supply in order not to have any strong noise any more. 73 :)
