Here I run through some common issues with the Yaesu FT-901DM and many other Hybrid Transceivers of this era. Like many well looked after rigs, It didn't need much doing to it.
The main issues were a lose VFO on tuning and the receive would intermittently go weak when switching from RX to TX. I gave it a real nice clean up and also did the usual contact cleaner around switches and pots etc.
It didn't need much doing to it, but these are still issues that might trip a few people up. So posting here for everyone's benefit :) And we all love radio videos right :)

Sounds like relay behavior. These are such good radios. 901/902 are just gold.

Greetings, I have one of those 901DM's here and it needs work. Spend some time on a FT-902DM and got it fixed up. Sold the ft-902DM with most accessories because of the room it took on the operating bench hihi Now working on a FT-102 that has relay problems. Love these old Yaesu radios and have worked on many FT-101-FT-101ZD. Thanks for the video.

Great video Andrew, this is very nice rig -- solid build. Due to the fact that in the internet you can find complete service manual it is possible to fix it forever:) By the way, I love your Australian accent, it remembers me Mad Max in its original version which was Australian, wasn't it? VY73!

I had issues with the attenuator switch that needed deoxit and the agc switch that also needed a clean. I used hemostats to pull the main and TR relay and also gave it a clean. All the sensitivity came back and didint have to touch anything else.

Nice video and radio. You should try asking for an "audio report" rather than saying "how does this radio sound?". I think that will be easier for a Russian to understand. 73 ZS2MAC,

Hello Andrew. I was wondering if you got the basket case you mentioned at the end of this video. I just got one of these beauties after a club meeting tonight. Nice bit of work on yours.

Hey thanks John! At this stage too many things going in life and haven't had a chance to get to it. One of these days I will. I suspect the VFO is stone dead or could just be crusty switches. Apparently the last ham who owned it had another 901 that he just swapped out boards with. It didn't cure the issue which tells me the problem most likely isn't major. Click the bell icon on my channel and you'll be notified each time I upload something and maybe one day you'll see it :)

How have you gone with the basket case 901? My 901 has some issues, very drifty, tx RX not quite aligned, VFO lumpy with back lash so some work to do. Still doing a FT-101B at present but 901 is next and scouting for info. Buddy from Radio Shop did a couple of 902 clips which are helpful. Vk5LTD

@@cl5ltd I know crazy hey? I don't always get to check my comments but I do reply if I noticed that I didn't, even if a while has passed! Hope to catch you on the bands again soon!

There is a problem I've seen a number of these radios that creates the impression that the VFO is drifting - but the actual cause was dirty contacts on the switches associated with the clarifier control.

I need an advice. A red wire has become loose on the front left switchboard. can anyone tell me to which pin of the switch (must be the PO or the NB Switch) it belongs? I have absolutely no reading on the S-Meter when set to PO (Output is about 50Watts up to 80Watts according to the display of my tuner). IC is okay and shows useable values.

Try having a look at the schematic. The service manual should also have a wiring diagram from memory. If you still get stuck, look me up on QRZ (VK3USA) and send me an email. I'll open mine back up and get some pictures to you. But try the schematic first as I'm very flat chat out here. 73, Andrew VK3USA.

Can you talk on your local repeaters with this radio?

Hi there. This is a HF radio covering the 160 to 10m bands and they were primarily used for SSB communication and maybe the occasional AM contact. While you can talk on 29mhz FM with this rig, it typically wasn't used in the 70s and 80s for talking on repeaters (29mhz FM the only HF band with repeaters). You're probably thinking of a 2m/70cm radio (VHF and UHF bands with lots of repeaters). Have a read up on the different bands and types of transceivers to understand the difference and good luck.
