So with my FT-991 back from being fixed for the problem I had with the IPO ( PreAmp ) which is now working, thanks Yaesu UK. Nowover the last week I've been using SSB on 2m and I could hear signals but with NO signal just loud audio so I did a test with my handy ft2d and low and behold so real carrier on fm showing up but on my FT847 the FM signal shows up with out any problem, so something is WRONG with the SSB RX SIGNALS, needs more test's. Watch the video and post below.
Update 21/03/2016
I've also checked 6m and that looks like everythings ok with RX also just checked 70cms and the RX seems ok there also doing the same test Keying up on the bands on FM and getting the signal showing up on SSB, so it only looks like 2m SSB RX has gone Down.
Sorry about the video jumping around.

My FT-991A has the same issue as far as a signal reading on 2 meters, however you're radio is not supposed to have a carrier when transmitting on single sideband. On AM or FM modes yes, but not on LSB or USB! The carrier is suppressed on sideband and then reinserted by the receiving station's radio. "Very 73 de KU4GW"

I've became a General a year ago and searching for a start-up radio. I like the 991 and also the IC-7300. The size fits my budget and desk space I have available to me. Thank you for your review M0AOV. It was helpful and will be more helpful if I should choose the 991.

Glad you have found the problem, fwiw you would not expect much of a response to a carrier on 144.300 when receiving on SSB tuned to the same frequency. Dial frequency of the receiving SSB rig would need to be offset somewhat (depending on the sideband selected). IE to receive the 144.300 carrier with the sideband rig on USB it should be tuned to about 144.299. (that will produce a 1khz beat note). You are definitely not the first person to accidentally switch AGC off and be puzzled by the S-meter not working!

+g0fvt Hi David thanks for the reply, the thing is I didn't turn the AGC OFF, I've never as far as I know had a radio that could have the AGC turned OFF so I didn't even think about it, when Yaesu has the radio in for repair it must have been done then because when I first had the radio SSB on 2m was working OK, but as they say you live and learn, this is why I do video's on RU-vid hopefully my video's help others and other Ham's help me with some of the problems I have that's the way it should be done, even the Tech guy's at Yaesu didn't know what it was when I phones them up, some time you just do not think about it at the time then it's a OH YE THAT'S IT brain storm hi hi Thanks again for the post.

ok so something I never knew about this radio you can turn the AGC OFF and a friend M0XDX told me to check it and YES it was switched off so I turned it back on and the 2M SSB is now receiving a carrier on FM so just got to hear some one local to make sure the RX is as it should be, Now I've got to see about the ATU on the FT-991 I've never used it because I have a LDG AT-600PROII and I've tried the internal ATU and it won't switch ON at all so I'll do a full reset and see if that fixes it, stay tuned.....

I'm sure you know there is a menu selection to switch from an external tuner to the internal tuner. Is it working?
@M0AOV
@M0AOV 8 лет назад
Hi mike Yes I know about the menu, when the tech's at yaesu did the lastfix for me they said the lead to the atu must have come loose they just re installed it and it works, so job done.

I am really just trying to help you.If you cover the top of your rigs where the heat comes out that will cause undue heat to build up inside the rig and could cause real damage in the long term.. Just wanted to help you out.
@M0AOV
@M0AOV 7 лет назад
Hi Mike thanks for the info, I normally only have a very small cover on the top of the radio just so my mobile Phone sits on there and doesn't scratch the top of the radio, I don't normally cover the top of the whole radio but as you say good info to check.

hi mate - how long did the ipo repair take? ive just bought ft991a from lamco and switched on for first time. ipo on all bands hears nothing and preamp needed on all bands to rx. i am gutted. yaesu uk are confident that dealer will fix but i fear this is a manufacturer repair. dont fancy been without the radio for weeks when i literally just bought it cheers neil
@M0AOV
@M0AOV 6 лет назад
Hi Neil it can take anything up to 2 weeks depending how many repairs they have in at Yaesu, make sure Yaesu UK tell you and get there name that the repair is LIFE time of the radio because you might be sending it back many times if you can be bothered to do that, besides the IPO problem the radio is very good for what it does, I use mine as the every day radio, Hope you get it sorted.

I'm planning on getting my first HF radio the FT991. It has been out for a year now I''m sure the problem is fixed now cause the first batch production starting with serial # N4 is not to buy. So serial N5 is good I was told. I have a FTM100DR is the reason to get the FT991 with C4FM digital built in

+joe phet Hi I have the FT991 plus FTM400 also the FT2 handy they are all very good C4FM is a very good mode to play with so I think you will enjoy yourself once you get your FT991

Could it be a clash with the auto tuner we see in the picture. FT991A has a built in tuner.
@M0AOV
@M0AOV Год назад
Hi Carmine Pascucci I always have the internal ATU turned off on all radio's the external ones like the LDG can cope better than the Internal ones so the answer would be NO the ATU's are only used on HF and 6M, no atu is used on 2m or 70cms it was just that the AGC was turned off somehow but someone gave me the heads up and I turned it back on, I never knew it would be turned OFF on the FT991
@johncliff996
@johncliff996 8 лет назад
Hi there, Interesting point here that you did not know that the AGC was turned off. Is there no indication to show that like I see ALC showing twice on the front panel of your FT-991. I presume then as to what you have stated is that it is only when you are in the menu select mode do you have the choice of what the AGC setting is, Crazy!. Yaesu should put that in Red letters on the initial setting up instructions. Another item that got my attention was that you were told that the Auto ATU leads must have come loose. Was that their excuse for the fact that they had obviously never been installed correctly. I have known military radio multi-point leads rarely become loose after the sets have been bounced about on long, very ruff cross country runs. That smacks of a very lame excuse for poor workmanship on that the leads must have come loose. Although the 991 appears to be a very good looking radio, I am put off the idea of getting one. I only hope that you received a good apology for your inconvenience and that it has not ended up costing you for transportation etc. to get it sorted out. 73 de John G0WXU.
@M0AOV
@M0AOV 8 лет назад
Hi John with regards the AGC you see that when you press the (F) Function button then you press it it just goes threw fast slow and so on but if you HOLD the button for about 1 to 2 seconds then the AGC goes OFF I never knew you could do that but who knowsas normal didn't fully read the manual. Yaesu UK are very good but that time who knows if the connections were put on fully or they just missed them. The FT991 is a Fantastic radio I won't sell it I just need a Fully working one which doesn't get any more problems, I've only ever had problems with the FT991 and my FTM-400dr which is a pain because my ID5100 is riight next to it and when I use 80m with say 400watts my FTM-400dr goes out of it's mind but the IC5100 has NO problems at all, once again the FTM-400dr is a Fantastic radio if the RFI was sorted out. With regards Transport of the FT991 Yaesu UK sorts that out it did cost me the first time the radio got sent back but now NO I don't pay for the postage.

@M0AOV 7 лет назад
Hi Aleziss I know what you mean, I do not sell my equipment I have 2x FT847's I've had them for around 15 years and only ever had the Power Button Problem and it's a easy fix to do, If you work Sat's at all they are one of the best radio's out there for it so mine will stay where they are, hope you pick anther one up some time 73's
@Aleziss
@Aleziss 7 лет назад
***** you did good by keeping both of them... I had a more difficult time back then and I had to get rid of pretty much all my station. I had a 847 with G5500 (still have the rotors in the box, too much lost for sell so I decided to keep them) along with hy-gain db218sat antennas, home brew 3 element yagi for 6m, and a 10, 15, 20, 40, 80 inverted v... I mostly did satellite, I did also some meteor scatter and some weak signal using my own build sound card interface with WSJT... Sound card interface also permitted me to do digital on HF too, I don't recall the software I was using though ! I had the honnor to contact MIR station before it went down (QSL confirmed received) and also made a great voice contact with Valery Korzun abord ISS ! Did work a lot of the analog satellite AO10 was my favorite, I've been able to do a 75000km up/down contact with stock radio and hy-gain antennas, I could clearly hear the audio delay in my voice due to the distance ! Did work FO20/29 quite a bit too ! I was also in the right timing to have try AO40 P3D also before it died completely... I had a rotor tracking controller by Dave Lamont Uni_Trac to automate G5500 rotors tracking fed from Nova for Windows by NLSA. But with the financial difficulties and all satellites were going down, a LOT of investments were required to have high frequency converters for 1.2 and 2.4GHz and add other antennas, more coax and preamps for those frequencies... I had no choice unfortunately !

it sounds like you put the equipment to good use I haven't gone higher than 70cms but as you know most ham equipment is expensive so you have to do what you have to do to get where you want to with the hobby, I do most sat chatting like you've done at my QTH in Turkey I have the high gain antennas there but here in the UK I mostly do HF I still do UHF/UHF but nothing high gain as I only have small antennas but the hobby moves on like we do so you change the hobby to suit what interests you there is too much you can do in our hobby and it's hard and expensive to try and do them all hi, enjoy the hobby while you have the time I say.
@Aleziss
@Aleziss 7 лет назад
***** Yeah, I still have some interest to buy equipement again but it's still really expensive... when I watch your videos you have a TON of radios !!! I had 3 overall back then, a hand held ICZ1A (that I still have), FT8500 (sold) and my ft847 that I miss so much ! I should have put it back in the box and forget it in the attic instead of selling it ! The radio technology has changed so much specially with sdr but they are sooo expensive ! I just want a nice rig but you don't get much for less than 1500$... Then I need a good antenna, I read that cobwebb antenas work great, a bit more complicated than my 3 element yagi that I build back then for 6M, that was a great band also with nice contacts there too... I have seen chinese radios that seems cheap in price but might also be cheap in construction... like the x108g... We'll see, hope to maybe catch you on the air some day !
@M0AOV
@M0AOV 7 лет назад
The reason I have a few radio's is because I buy them cheap, I wait till the new equipment comes out and let everyone buy them for the full price then with in a few weeks or a few months they get sold because of different reasons but I normally pay around HALF of what the full price was I still get the almost full warranty so if anything happens I can get it repaired or get a New Radio so I'm fine with buy the way I do, if I had to buy them NEW there is NO way I could they are very expensive, but that's the way I get most of my Gear. With regards the cobweb antenna I have 3 and I like them for what they are once again I let other people pay the full price and like my last cobweb I got just a few months ago I got a third of the price off the new price and the guy who I got it from only had it a week so if you can look around your way see what the full price is and see what people are selling there gear at and just wait till the good deals come along THEY do.

Well it looked to me that your hand held radio was in FM mode and your FT 991 was in USB so , no your not likely to see a carrier.. put both radios in the same mode and meter will indicate a signal of that mode.. I tried it.. Also I rarely operate with the IPO amp on. Radio really doesn't need it for most of your contacts.. more so on the higher bands.. 73

+Mark Bartlett I've sent the ft991 back you Yaesu uk for the ATU to get fixed as it's not working, there are a few things to check when you get a ft991 i.e. IPO/ATU/Full Power Out Put On All Bands/ I've just checked my M8's ft991 and his is working fine, it's a brilliant radio depending what you need or want it for, mines a update for my ft847 and it is loads better.

The FT991 is the only, get it only radio I know of that you can switch the AGC OFF on, Even the Tech guy's at Yaesu UK had NO idea about my symptoms so you learn something New every day But it sounds like you know everything.. Really........It's a little bit like not knowing that having a IC756Pro that's not been wide-banded will not TX above 7.100 and asking others if there's a Fix, ( JEFF ) even I knew that and they gave YOU a License ????????? tut tut you've heard POT KETTLE BLACK ...........

I like Yaesu but, the 991 has terrible reviews
@M0AOV
@M0AOV 8 лет назад
+Achisachis73 But the thing is loads of radios don't have brill reviews but in the end it all depends what YOU think of the radio because your the one who's going to use it no anyone else, The IC7300 has only just really come out over the last month in the UK but I've already seen a few for sale second hand and they are as everyone say's Brill radio's but once again the new owners might just not like them, Me I like my FT991 for what it does for ME no one else I have other HF radio's which all do the same but I still have them because the do different things for me and that's what it's all about YOU...
@Achisachis73
@Achisachis73 8 лет назад
***** I understand your point and it is valid. The reasons I do not want to buy it are not cosmetic or based on opinion. the reasons are, among many others, based on failed finals, Poor AM transmission and a panadapter that needs to be refreshed. (not a true panadapter) Those things are important when operating a radio so, if getting a radio that is adverstised as a 100W AM TX and it does not do that, and that is not a big deal to you...congratulations, you are a happy guy that does not care about broken promises.
@BoboAthanassion
@BoboAthanassion 8 лет назад
+Achisachis73 First of all, this post is in no way to offend anyone, I'm just here with my thoughts. The pan adapter will work continuously but it will also mute the radio while it's scanning. It was designed to find a working station quickly. If you want the pan adapter to work continuously while receiving the station your on then you will need to get the higher end radio like the FT-DX 3000. But for its size it does pack a lot of features. Great for field day, mobile or portable use or if you need something that doesn't take up a lot of desk space.
