Outstanding! I've been off my FT-991A for almost two years and never tried FT8. Watching this video got me up and running within minutes. Thank you very much! 73, N4SFS.
This is the only guide that worked for me out of all the ones out there. Thank you so much! I was desperately trying to get it to work with PPT Method = CAT in WSJT-X but I was unsuccessful. Other stations were only able to hear me once i changed the PPT Method to RTS. It's the only thing that worked out of a hundred permutations I tried among all the software + radio settings. Literally the only thing that worked on my brand new 991A.
Briliant! When watching 3 videos I still could not make a QSO, after watching yours, I got an instant (my first QSO) on 40m! Thank you, you are a star! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much for putting this together. I wasn't having any luck getting the mic output to work, but it turned out to be the PTT settings in WSJT-X. I configured it the same way you have it configured here (with exception to the COM ports used) and it works perfectly now.
Good content, running win10 and it's a fit trying to get everything to like each other, radio and wjdx. Been out of of hamming for years and the technology is killing me 73 KQ4CD Paul
@@HamRadioDX Thank you. Two questions come to mind. 1. Is WSJT (FT-8) ran on upper sideband for all HF frequencies? 2. Will the software (WSJT) put the radio in digital mode for you? Or do you have to do this manually ?
nice video - followed instructions for setting up my FT-991, to bad (as I have found with this type video) FT-8 did not work. WSJT-X shows frequency, can hear ft-8 Tx but no other info fills in on screen.
I find using the SSB settings is useless when the FT-991/A have an entire data mode menu setting when everything can be set and left for operation using the touch screen Data-U mode
Thanks good info.. My 991a is using slightly different settings but i think that's not to unusual. I have menu #108 set to DAKY on the 991. wsjt-x has the PTT set to CAT, and the stop bits set to 1. I am also not using the USB/DATA mode just USB.
I had to do it using the USB digital mode on the radio, I tried using the normal USB band mode, but the radio kept wanting to use the front mic for audio instead of the USB sound card, so I wasn't hearing any tones when moni was switched on. Switched it to USB-D, set the D-Gain to 5, hardly registers any ALC, about 1 bar, run Fldigi on MacBook with rig control, 10W, been heard in Poland on PSK-31. 73 M7PDF
Interesting video, thanks. So this is a bit different than other setups, I will have to try it. What logging app do you use with this for keeping your log book entries up to date.
Don't know if you still read comments here or not, but I am following your settings and when I open the "Radio" Sertings on wsjt-x all is see for comm port is USB. there are no other choices. ??
unfortunately while doing the settings you say "There's just a few menu settings that you need to change" but you don't say what they are or what to change them to.
I'm ready to buy this radio but I'm limited on space. I have a star duster up now for my cb/ssb on one end of my travel trailer (which doesn't move) so I have the end of the trailer but that's it. No room to string out a 50ft dipole. Suggestions?
The siting keep going back, you just talk to fast ,lol. I got the 991a never know when you have to leave for a another location. Still not sure what antenna to use, and a hole lot outstanding. At the QTH good to go. Just the probable. 73 de KQ4CD
@@HamRadioDX I'm not real smart when it comes to computers. So I'm gonna ask how do you slow the video down. I guess I'm illiterate when it comes to computers 73 down under de KQ4CD
@@paulhastings3109 All good mate. If you're watching on a PC, click the settings button in the bottom right of the playing window and select "Playback Speed" in the list. You can then choose what speed you want to play at.
It’s quite possible that the driver installed them around the wrong way. Usually Standard (PTT) is installed first then Enhanced (CAT) - but perhaps was the other way around for you
Ham Radio DX - My apology for the negative comment. It’s easy to sit here in front of the screen and criticize someone else. I have a 991A and would really like to get going on JS8CALL. I’m not very smart and tend to need specific guidance on technical matters. Hope you will accept my apology.
@@HamRadioDX it's not a bad video but the processes for getting around on 10 are different and I still can't get WSJTX to see the com drivers that I installed from Yeasu. So far not fun....ill report back once I get it figured out.
I'm having a heck of a time getting mine to work. I followed the video to the letter setting up the rig. I finally got WSJT to key the 991 but hearing just a faint audio from the speaker. Obviously I haven't tried everything but I'm close. Hair pullage going on. Could it be an audio driver problem? Don WA7OCZ
Faint audio from the speaker of the radio or the PC? Make sure in audio settings both USB codecs are selected as the audio device. What happens if you TX a tune tone? Do you get output power, or ALC action? You can try reinstalling the latest drivers as you mentioned too. Let us know how you go
Great video, just what I was looking for. To many guides have too much faffing around in the menu quarry for folk who use data and ssb and flit from one to the other. Thanks very much de 2E0IEI.
Hello, I need your support. I use an FT 991A and do WSJT-X via HAM Radio Deluxe. I set up the connection properly and the sound card also works. I control PTT via RTS. My problem is that when I go on air the MODE switches from D-USB to USB by itself. What could this be and do you have a solution? THX
Just purchased this radio and find this very helpful! I've got the 891 and see most of the settings are the same. I'm curios what mix of Ferrite your using, I'm guessing the 31 mix? Like+Sub!
Could you verify that since you said you do not use the "dedicated data" then you do not have DATA-USB selected in the F-M list, but USB when using data modes?
Hayden, Last year you helped me set up my 7300 for WSJT, and now, since I'm taking my FT991A on vacation, I've just watched this. You have a nice, calm, logical approach. Thanks. Tim KG6G, formerly K3LSU
Hi, I've just had windows 10 install its latest version 1903, no longer do you have access to setting the volumes of the Receive and TX anymore... any ideas apart from strangling Microsoft... cheers.
Good morning Hayden great video, I set my new 991A up with these settings, perfect. Just one question, what setting do you actually use for ft8 ie, power, mic gain, IPO etc. I had a ic 7000 before and was getting loads of contacts but the 991a seems a bit quiet so im guessing the radio settings need adjusting. Any advice please. Ian
I just use the same settings as I use for regular SSB. Just set the ALC level so it just registers on the meter, 1 or 2 bars or so. That way you aren’t overdriving
The USB serial IC failed so that was replaced. If you want a shack in the box, go a 991A. If HF/6 if all you’d like the 7300 wins hands down. The waterfall and features of the 7300 make it a difficult choice
I own both. Receiver capabilities are same in weak signals and to resist against strong signals I think the audio receive is more pleasant on the FT. But, the waterfall is really better on the IC.. that makes a big difference in contest for example. Except that, the choice depends your needs about VHF/UHF...
Everything is appearing to function correctly. I don't seem to be actually transmitting, even when it shows that I am in wsjt-x. It shows no power transmitting on the radio
