WARNING: This video is well over 2 years old now. That means, since then, there have been firmware updates and updates to the manual to include FT8 settings. This may not be the most optimal way to do things anymore
These are the settings I used to get up and running with the FTDX-10 in WSJTX. You may need to adjust RPORT Gain and your Volume levels in windows to get NO ALC!.
Keep in mind, at the time of making this video, this radio has been out for about 2-3 days. This means I've documented my steps to the best of my ability and if things need to be changed, I will update the comments section accordingly.
I've received a flood of comments about how FT8 isn't ham radio.. .Really, I don't care, my goal of this channel is to help people, not try to limit what they do.
Thanks for checking this out!

You do realize that there is a cable chase at the top of that mic boom, right? They do that so you don't have to use Ty-Wraps to manage the mic cable. Also, if you're having RFI problems WITH A BALANCED AUDIO DEVICE and you need a ferrite core on it, check your audio devices. This ain't anything new, they have microphones next to 25KW radio stations. I guess that's why they call it "amateur" radio.

Thank you for working out all the details of getting ft8 working with the DX10 and sharing. Some other thoughts on the windows sound and wsjtx settings. Regarding the audio out slider in the Windows sound settings, where you were adjusting to keep the ALC low (just barely triggering) - the fine line where you are getting max power out without any degradation of signal. This is an associated function with the Pwr slider in wsjtx. To see this in action you (hrd) can set that Windows settings master volume to say 30 or 35 and close. Then in wsjtx click tune. You will likely be pushing some level of ALC on the radio. Now slide the Pwr down and you will see it adjust the audio feeding into the radio, and the ALC should back down. Set your Windows setting so when the Pwr slider is maxed you are triggering some ALC (maybe half way) then back down using the Pwr slider to no or just barely triggering. The advantage of this is you will likely find that near the edges of the 2400 Hz (or so) ft8 range you may have to play with this setting to get that max power out without ALC, or back it down a little in the middle if over-driving. This is usually a function of the audio passband of the radio during transmit. Using the Pwr slider you have flexibility to adjust and compensate. I have my settings adjusted for the verge of ALC on the first mark down of the Pwr slider when transmitting at 1500 Hz. This has given me all the range of adjustment I have needed. Those with SignalLink can of course adjust using the control on the front of that device, but can also set (and forget) and use the slider also. Hope that helps.

Thanks for producing this video. Ive had problems getting my rig to transmit audio on FT8. After much searching, I watched your video for a second time, and caught the mode setting for DATA-U. Another pictorial also shows that. The Yaesu manual and most videos and pictorials show setting to UPPER (Upper sideband). Even though I download it and installed the USB drivers from the Yaesu site I had problems. Im using a Lenovo desktop, and suspect its related to the platform. I appreciate your videos as they are quick and concise, and communicated clearly.

Dude: I drove over to a ham’s house today, which was 100 miles each way. He has a new FTDX-10 and had already gotten another ham to try and set it up, to no avail. This was the fist time I had seen one of these transceivers and after learning how to move around it, it quickly made sense. I had seen multiple articles on how to setup the FTDX-10 with WSJT-X, but they were all different and conflicted with each other. I remember watching your video on this transceiver and how you set it up for WSJT-X. The previous guy had not loaded any drivers and most of the settings were wrong. I used you video to set the rig up. It worked and we worked a good number of state-side contacts and a lot of DX. The only issue I have with it pertains to the ALC. Adjusting the sound settings in Windows 10 had no effect. Even though we made a lot of contacts, we still had some ALC showing.

Hey there. Glad things are sort of up and running. In wsjtx, there is an adjustment bar on the right hand side of the screen. Can bring that down and see if the ALC adjusts? I use that like a fan adjustment between bands. If you did try that already, let me get to my computer and get a few more ideas for you. 73

Trying to get FT8 running on my new FTDX-10. A couple things in this video I'd not seen so far elsewhere: IPO set to IPO, R.FIL to 3kHz, AGC OFF, SHIFT to +700Hz, WIDTH to 3kHZ. While I still don't have any audio out--yup, Windows 11 USB drivers from Yaesu set up seemingly correctly and picked in WSJT-X's "Audio" panel and the Win11 audio levels set per this video--so continuing my RU-vid exploration for that last "secret". ;-) Thanks for a great video.

Thanks for the video! Regarding your comment that "everybody hates ft8", I don't! I dabbled with psk31 and other digital modes, then life took over and I didn't touch my radio for a few years. Got back into it about a month ago when I heard some chatter on a repeater about the Pony Express Re-Ride through El Dorado County in California. Then...discovered ft8! I've been glued to my radio every since. The thing is, I can see ft8 being an entry point for bringing back ham radio. It's technical, it's "easy", it allows DX with some practice, and it's fun! Let them hate it, I like ft8! 73

Related subject; the video out port requires a DVI-D (Not DVI-I) cable and port on the TV/Monitor or it blows an internal fuse in the radio! Some converters, HDMI to DVI, will blow the fuse. I called Yaesu customer support and they told me this! Its worth a call to be safe.

Adapters don't blow fuses (unless they put a dead short on the 5VDC pin.) Drawing current greater than what the fuse is rated for is what blows fuses. Some HDMI monitors draw a brief surge greater than 0.68A when coming out of sleep mode. Yaesu should have used a time-delay fuse rather than a normal fast-blowing one, then this problem wouldn't exist.

Thanks very much for this video. I’ve watched it numerous times and I still keep coming back to it. One question I have is about SPLIT. In the radio settings for wsjt-x is a setting for split. You said “none”. You posted a copy of someone else’s settings where they said “fake it”. The FTDX10 has the ability to do split. Why not set this setting to “Rig”? WSPR seems to be working using that setting. I’m working on ft8 next, but I’d like to understand. Thanks again!

Dude great as always 3 questions . What is with the shift? Why is that needed?. On my 7300 I use my RF gain to adjust the receive signals so I’m close to but not in red, you adjust the mic line in. This seams a pain for when strong signals come in , I guess I can hit the attenuator on the ftdx10. Thoughts? Also on the 7300 they have mode presets so I gave one for FT-8 and one for SSB. Makes it easy to switch. I had to adjust the Ftdx10 on every band and then use band stacking is there an easier way?
@HAMRADIODUDE
@HAMRADIODUDE 2 года назад
John, great questions and I'll do my best to answer. I have since set the shift to Rig, allowing the radio to do any shifting when transmitting. I have done this in WSJTX because it seems to reduce an issue I was having with a weird harmonic which would transmit with WSJTX. If I recall correctly (it's been a while), others were having the same issue and this is what they did to correct the shift. This behavior can be observed by enabling the "multi" button on the touch screen, as I recall. Additionally, the radio settings I display in this video may not be needed anymore because of Yaesu's firmware with the FT8 presets. As far as your band stacking question, that is what I do as well. I have hit the band I am operating on, until the one of three band stacks show my data U mode. Then I know I am in my ft8 presets. It becomes a pain, but the way you described is the same way I am doing it for now. Hopefully this is a bit helpful and clears up a little confusion. Thanks, Sean

Hello, this was posted by since individual on a ftdx10 forum. I believe it will resolve the first issue with the recieve band: I'll give it a shot:- 1. Install drivers for the CP2105 USB-serial chipset (can be obtained from the Yaesu page) 2. In the radio, select FUNC->Radio Settings (bottom left) - select MODE PSK/DATA - leave Data Shift at 1500 (with DSP shift set to 0) - DATA MOD SOURCE = REAR - REAR SELECT = USB - RPTT = DAKY (only use RTS if your PTT Method in JTDX is RTS) - RPORT GAIN = 6 (or less - depends on the Windows playback level. Adjust later for low or zero ALC) - set low and high filter limits to OFF 3. In the radio, select FUNC->Operation Setting - select GENERAL - CAT RATE = 38400 - CAT RTS = ON 4. In JTDX, select Settings->Radio - Rig = Yaesu FTDX101D - select the appropriate COM port (from Device Manager->COM ports) - Baud Rate = 38400 (should be set in the radio CAT RATE as well) - Data Bits = Eight - Stop Bits = One - Handshake = None - DTR = High - RTS = High - PTT Method = CAT (RTS works but will TX during reboot) - Mode = Data/Pkt - Split Operation = Fake It 5. In JTDX, Select Settings->Audio Input = USB AUDIO CODEC (FT-DX10 from radio) Output = USB AUDIO CODEC (FT-DX10 to radio) 6. In the radio - make sure mode is DATA-U or DATA-L as appropriate (usually DATA-U) - from screen, set RF Filter width to 3kHz - from the right side knob, set SDR filter width to 3kHz - from the right side knob, set SDR filter shift to 0 7. AGC = FAST (AGC OFF will easily result in overloading and clipping) - R.FIL (receive filter) = 3kHz - NB = OFF - NR = OFF 8. From Windows Sound Control Panel, select the playback device for the FT-DX10 and adjust level so that the JTDX registers an audio level around 50-60dB on the bottom right bar. - also adjust the Recording device for the FT-DX10 for a level that gets you low or 0 ALC movement. This works in conjunction with the Pwr level setting in JTDX (top right) It seems to take quite a while before all these changes register in JTDX so just give it a long while. Maybe reboot the PC and power down the radio and turn it on again. It might help if you renamed your input and output devices in Sound Control Panel in Windows. That makes them easier to identify if you have multiple devices Additionally, I have the same issue with 60m ft8, and I don't believe there is a work around yet, which is unfortunate

But I do see the transmitted signal on my radio. Also, why did you change the radio settings in the app to the 101d instead of the dx10?
@HAMRADIODUDE
@HAMRADIODUDE 2 года назад
Hi John. When I created this video, wsjtx did not yet have support for the ftdx10, I believe. As far as the power level, it typically could be one of a few things, speaker output in Windows sound settings, confirming you have the correct output device in wsjtx and confirm that the slider bar in wsjtx is adjusted correctly. Sometimes I lose output power when I adjust my windows sound settings with wsjtx open. Typically I restart wsjtx and the power output works. Hopefully some of this helps

Thanks for posting. Avoiding ALC deflection is correct, as is a target Tx power of 20W. However, the best way to achieve those is to set the Tx power level to the maximum (100W typically, of course), and then to rely solely on audio drive to achieve the target Tx power level. 73 de AB3ZI

Try the Mirabox Capture Card 3.0 ($80 on Amazon) you can direct stream straight to an input on OBS from the DVI out on the FTDX 10. Works like a charm. You’ll probably need to lower the screen size for the external display settings on the FTDX 10, for your streams, but it will give you direct video from the back of the rig onto your stream my friend. Hi Patrick. Thanks for asking. I don't know exactly . I do recall before I got rid of the FTDX10 (I went with a flex) that the FTDX-10 now has FT8 Settings / presets on the radio. That should work with wspr as well, as I recall. When you switch over to wspr, I assume (for some odd reason), you just show no output power? Cheers.

Using the setting of AGC "off" yields terribly over driven FT8 sounds (to my ears). I went back to AGC "fast" as I had used this setting successfully for about 3 months on my FT-991a. (Perhaps my antenna is providing too much gain? Or perhaps there are too many FT8 stations on top of me here in ATL.) Also, a shift of only +200 leaves most of the useful part of the FT8 frequencies available. But OTOH if you use a shift of +700, that eliminates a usable portion of the FT8 spectrum.
@HAMRADIODUDE
@HAMRADIODUDE 2 года назад
Good point. There is not really a one setting works for all. At the time this video was made, I had a compromised antenna system and I would assume I didn't have the gain to have to utilize ACG as fast. That said, I still tend to use ACG set to auto on my new antenna. But also probably because that's what is in the FT8 DataU presets in the new updated firmware version. I suppose WSJTX could bae a good tool to visually show what the different ACG settings do. 73

hello Thank you for the video. It has helped me to get started but I wanted to make a few comments: 1) I noticed that you did not reference the use of the PRESET soft key ( MODE > PRESET ) as suggested in the manual on page 65. The manual states that by using the PRESET soft key, use can temporarily change the PSK/DATA settings. Of course, pressing this soft key again will return the radio settings to that listed under PSK/DATA. This is just a comment, so no big deal if you did not know! 2) The second comment that I would like to make is that it is possible to use Upper Side Band mode instead of DATA-U. I do realize that FT8 does work with Upper Side Band in all frequencies. I may have missed something but I do not remember you explaining why you choose DATA-U over Upper Side Band mode. 3) Regarding the rear-port USB serial port parameters, I am using 8 data bits, no-parity, & 1 stop-bit (8-NONE-1) and have not encountered any issues. Perhaps the radio is able to auto-detect and compensate. 4) Would you mind confirming that FT8 (as well as FT4) is AFSK? That is all. I hope that these comments will help you as they are just suggestions. If your settings work for you then it is all good.

Unable to find baud rate setting window for W10 Device Manager. 2. Receive power level bar indicator lower left is red 0-5 dB. 3. Xmt only shows short spike on 3DSS display, no reading on MFJ meter. 4. Six may be totally dead but I've yet to hear any signals, which is unusual in my area. 5. Unable to locate WIDTH & SHIFT controls to change/check settings. Power: Had 45W/0 back earlier. Antenna is excellent halo. Radio transmits just fine on 50.313 DATA-U when I PTT. Last time I used it for QSO a week ago on 52.525 FM with neighbor worked OK. Both the received signal level meter & transmitter have worked fine while changing these setting. Everything OK except no FT8. Jack/W2INF

The radio typically has input and output audio levels and it seems to be ideal to balance the gain in the computer and in the radio for less audio noise and better resolution. So if you are down around 15 in the computer's input and output a good idea is to adjust the radio to accept a stronger audio drive from the computer (reduce the radio's audio sensitivity) and to output a stronger audio. Balancing the levels will improve overall performance in my opinion. My reasoning is that the ADC (analog to digital converter) doesn't actually adjust the signal level, it simply encodes the stream and THEN adjust the level digitally and you could lose quite a lot of resolution. For instance, a setting of 16 is 4 bits less than 100 percent. You want that resolution so I run WSTJ at 80 percent; less than that and your signal is going to disappear in the quantization error. Clipping (too strong) is much worse so better to be too low than too high.

@thomasmaughan4798
@thomasmaughan4798 10 месяцев назад
@@johnpeterson7264 "which level are you suggesting to change ? In the radio or in the computer ?" The computer OUTPUT is adjusted to about 80 percent so as to get maximum benefit, cleanest waveform and least quantizing error. What that means is for extreme example, a sine wave with only 4 bits has only 16 levels and is going to be "staircased" really bad and nearly impossible to provide, or detect, delicate phase changes in digital signals. More bits is better, and you get more bits by raising signal level but not to the point of clipping.

@thomasmaughan4798
@thomasmaughan4798 10 месяцев назад
@@johnpeterson7264 Yes. That's a good starting point. Another item that impacts success in a big way is ensuring the computer's clock is spot on, not more than about 2 seconds difference. You'll see a column on WSTJ, "DT" that's Delta Time or the apparent difference between what your computer thinks is the start of a frame and when the radio signal actually starts. Keeping your DT down as close to zero as possible is important. Windows has a feature to adjust to internet time; it is not all that easy to find. I installed an "app" in my laptop computer to pluck time from the Icom IC-705 GPS receiver and that sets it exactly but using the internet time is easy enough.

Why not Split? I think operating without it is very a poor practice. I use fake it and never try to TX on the other station's exact frequency. At very least if you aren't using split, refrain from calling a station that is in the middle of another QSO. They might also not be using split and you are just clogging up the frequency. It really annoys me when I'm working some faint DX and a, ah, unenlightened person with a strong local signal starts calling me wiping out the DX. Don't people understand that I can't answer them if I can't finish the current QSO? All this can be avoided by using split. Otherwise great video, thanks.
