Short video going over modifications to the Yaesu FT817ND to allow transmit over 1.8 - 33mhz , 33 -56mhz , 140 -154 mhz,and 420 - 470 mhz. And the results therof. For educational purposes only and not an endorsement of use of a transmitter outside of it's type acceptance or operation outside of license privileges.

Incredibly useful video. I was going to buy one of these and mod it as a do-everything radio but no way if it won't do marine or FRS.

Thanks for sharing this information. I have a 817ND and really like the little radio. Not sure if I will mod it or not, but it is nice to know and have the right instructions which I did find the instructions just like what you showed. I was reading thru your comments about the 9:1 unun and 35 feet of wire, I have the same antenna and use it for Parks On The Air (POTA) and it worked great for me. The only difference is I did put a 26 foot counterpoise on it instead of using 20 to 30 feet of coax to the radio. Again great instructional video. Juddie WD8WV

SurvivalComms thanks for replying. I sub’d to your channel. I am going to check out your uBitx videos! I built one myself and have the touch screen mod done to it. I even built my own enclosure. I have another uBitx to build, the Version 4. My first one was the Version 3 and I really like it. I have even built a Bitx40, an earlier one that didn’t have the raduino. So I ordered a QRP-Labs VFO/Signal Generator so I could have a 2 line display to see what frequency I was on. 73 WD8WV

FT817 and FT817ND will become a Classic/Collectible. It's such a versatile radio for all sorts of situations. It goes well with Tokyo HI Power 45W HF amp. Hello, I just purchased an 817ND with the mod and was curious what it does. I want to thank you since now I have a better understanding of the Mod itself. I was curious as to the bracket around the radio. Who makes it, and do you have a source to get one? Thanks again and 73s! Mike

Recognise this is an old video - I have looked into various mods on handhelds as I would love a radio to communicate on UHF, but also occasionally on true AM airband. As a paraglider pilot, generally chatting with ground instructors or other pilots on UHF but if flying cross country through controlled airspace, permission may be required via AM transmission on airband. After this modification to this model, is the TX actually AM, or transmitting FM on those frequencies? (seems like the latter is most likely based on forums). Cheers
@survivalcomms
@survivalcomms Год назад
It will TX AM but does NOT cover the aviation band. Even if it did you should never use a modified HAM radio. Use a radio type accepted for Part 87 service. Best option IMHO for your application is a Team Wendy radio chest pack that holds two portable radios (one for UHF and one type accepted for airband). Thanks for watching !

This video let me think so, or shall I keep it for portable 11 meter uses and get the FT817ND used on ebay for the bands without doing the modification you are describing here? Anything above -125dBm, is a good receiver for practical purposes. The S meter is not a good indicator, as the receiver received well below the S meter action. If I have RX issues on UHF, I can install a GaAsFET amplifier. Low noise figure brings the useable signal down to -125 dBm with ease.

You can find frequencies to listen to on Radioreference.com. It is my belief that someone starting from square one would greatly benefit from a ham radio course and getting their tech license. You can search for amateur radio clubs in your area and next weekend is field day so that would be a great way get some questions answered in person. Dave Casler's channel has his online technician training playlist on his channel : ru-vid.com I hope this helps !
@captlarry-3525
@captlarry-3525 2 года назад
The Hi Q of the chebyshev filters will not allow much in the way of frequency excursions. Radios that can transmit on very wide swaths of spectrum ( like the old baofengs) could do so because they really haven't got the filters that make them clean. There are limits to the band width of the ferrite transformers used in the transmitters, which is the other issue. Its easy to make a pretty wide band transistor linear HF amp if you don't care if it is clean. Cheap cb bricks are the classic example of filthy amplifiers with no filters. Class C (fm) amplifiers same deal when they are broad band. One might by-pass the filters in the low and hi band vhf sections and achieve some boafeng like tx.. but how shitty would t be.? shitty enough to be illegal and grungy. unless you want to own grunge generator... whats the point ? In an emergency, when other wise illegal operation is sometimes tolerated for a moment... it would be swell f the 817 had the ability to communicate with aircraft. No single change would be more useful. But it simply aint possible. During flood or earthquake.. its the one capability we'd like. The RX in the aircraft band is swell though.
