I own the 7300 as my indoor station and the 705 for QRP portable. Now I was looking for another easy to carry radio to do HF summers outside in the garden. In my focus were the 710, the DX10 and the 991a. DX10 fell out because of bigger size, heavier weight and a consumption of 3A doing RX (I´ll try to run the rig by a solar-backed-up powerstation). At last I choose the 991a, it will arrive on saturday. Besides the good receiver and the additional VHF it has been the (you might laugh now) back lit buttons, which led me to my decision. A nice feature for night-owls :-) 73, Bernhard, DC6NS
You can't go wrong with either radio. Both great rigs. If you are into HF, or VHF/UHF or digital or all the above, you have all the bases covered with the FT-991A. Best bang for the buck in HAM radio. The FT-991A actually has a pretty darn good receiver. I have owned one before and have one now along with my FTdx10. 73!
I have limited space, only enough for one radio and so covering all frequencies was a big factor for me. Nice to know that I don't have to regret my decision.
For what it's worth: I've always considered the FT-991A an awesome radio, right back to when I first got interested in Amatuer Radio 5 or so years ago. For me, my decision was to go for the FT-710. I've ordered one and doubt I'll be disappointed. The 710 offers enhanced audio( external speaker included)', DVI output to a monitor, support for keyboard or mouse and 50W on 70Mhz 4m band. IMO this is no way competittion for the 991A, it is competition for the IC-7300. The 991A is an excellent radio, but I have an FTM-400 and FT5DE that already do Fusion/WiresX. I already have a 'shack in a box', an IC-705 (D-Star as well). I have DMR covered as well. I picked the 710, I have more than enough VHF/UHF radios. A nice HF/50/70 rig with loads of features to learn to encourage me to use HF more. 2E0GKF/M7ARQ 73
Hi yes I think you made a good choice i also have the 705 we are so lucky that we have such good radios to chooses from most Hams I talk to also have many of these type radios and overall they are all well priced and hold there second hand value for many years.
991a is a fantastic radio! The more I learn the features it offers the more I want to keep it. It's a great radio for all the bands👍.But I wish it had more channel memory's.Thats not a game changer ,the filtering on hf is awesome for a entry level radio...Cheers my friend .73s Don
if you want a do it all pretty well, the 991a is a no brainer. If you want a specialist rig, the FT-710, Icom 7300, and a few others are worth considering. All depends on what flavors you want on your ice cream. All great tools. If you want to be the best Radio operator you can be, having a tool that lets you practice more skills and modes is preferred. 991a is in the cards for me.
Where I live there are zero amateur shops to try or look at any of these radios. You have taken a journey over the years to arrive at where you sit in the hobby, VHF / UHF. For me, I am at the start of my journey, I bought the 710 and awaiting arrival, did I make the right decision, I don't know? Was an Icom 7300 or FTDX10 better, maybe? Not Sherwood report only, but usability, the buttons, interaction with the radio for what you want to do. I just don't know? But you have to be in the game, not sitting on the sidelines, so I bought something. It may be like you I arrive at, I am a VHF / UHF guy. In that case I am confident I can sell the 710 and buy something else if I need to. I don't want radios piled up on a table, a small shack in a box is very appealing to me. For you, the 991 is the perfect match.
The more I have looked into the currently available radio’s, the more the 991a stands out. Are there others that do certain things better? Sure.. But at the end of the day you would have to buy way more equipment for way more money just to cover what you can do with the 991a and an ATAS-120. The ROI on all the other equipment is just not enough to justify what most people are doing with the radios. Having to swap stuff around all the time or having it strewn around all over the place is also a haste. The only thing I would change would be the size. I have never been a person that wanted or needed things to be small. I would love to see them take the 991a and make it bigger. Give me a 7” touchscreen, some bigger buttons, maybe a few extra buttons that could be assignable. Put it on the desktop and enjoy. Just my 2 cents.
If Yeasu makes new "991" to be like "FTdx10" with roofing filters and new display analyzer, that will be good job. Also to have small consumption (less than 2Amps on Rx).
I prefer the 991 For the shack in a box features. Not sure if I would actually use all the features. Appreciate you sharing this video and your thoughts & opinions. 73 Steve AA4SH
Which one lasts longer on a battery power? It seems that the FT991a is power hungry. Uses a significant amount of power to operate over the FT-987. I'd assume because of the waterfall display. I wonder if the FT-710 version addresses this issue.
@@HamTechRadioScannerDrones yeah I’m selling out I think all new equipment never did get an antenna off the ground worst couple thousand I ever spent lol
