You decide. Not scientific, but just a video showing the similarities in these 2 rigs on weaker signals on 15M CW as the band was going out. Both are 300hz wide filtering. Both with preamps on and off. AGC is set to fast on both rigs. No speakers were used. Audio is fed directly from each rig into the camera audio input.

I replaced my TS-590S with an FTDX10. didn’t like the ergonomics, I just sold it and ordered the TS-590SG, the 590’s are a joy to use. yaesu loves menu crap

I had both radios...Here is the play...If you are in the suburbs, (Like I am) and have neighbors with Solar power, and the rest of the noise, you need a receiver that can knock this out...The FT DX has enough algorithms in the DNR that knock it out, along with the Contour adjustments...I can't have a QSO 50% with the 590s, and can 95% of the time with the FTDX 10...(SSB)

I like that you connected the audio out of the radios directly. So many silly videos here comparing ambient acoustics and not receivers. What I can tell you is that any receiver will perform equally well in that kind of test. I have a 590SG, a 140, a 940, a 180 and a TS50. All receive very weak signals almost the same. Differences appear only whe you have a strong signal nearby, in which case the 590SG will easily win. So, if you don't do contests, ANY rig will do. I tend to use more my 140 than the 590SG for instance.
@cx5fk

Totally agree with Marco rx from different rigs will do the job. The difference is in the gust of an adjacent signal. Anyway the noise floor is important if you look at ts890s on sherwood's list you will see that the noise floor is second to none and with a really poor signal it will certainly make a difference. The rest is just sensitivity and in that almost everyone is quite even. 73 very good demonstration.

I loved my 590SG for the week I had it, so smooth and stout, felt like a maximized quality finely constructed machine, but I couldn't get any richness from the RX audio and being an SSB fan, I had to pass it along. Someone in Oregon is now hopefully very happy, but I still wish KW would've built in a bit more bass and fullness to the RX audio because I've never owned as nice a rig in terms of true quality. Now looking real hard at the TS-890 and I know that has the audio richness I'm looking for, I just hope it's build quality is equal with the 590SG. It seems your AF gain on the 590 might've been set touch lower than was that of the FTdx-10.
@w9sn491
@w9sn491 2 года назад
It was hard to get the gain to be equal on them just by listening.
@neoretrophoto9198
@neoretrophoto9198 2 года назад
For the KNW 590SG, You will likely find the richness you seek if you use the RX EQ available for free download- its in the remote control SW and once you set it (lift the low freq. / tame the highs) you do not need to run the remote SW- it stays in 590 memory. The 890 has an RX eq in the MENU. Benchmark for me is the TS-870 for strong SSB richness- have heard none better. Of course all with an external speaker. With EQ, both the 590 and 890 come very close to the 870 on strong signals. Yes 890 build quality is equivalent to the 590! Yaesu does a much better job with DNR but when engaged I actually note lost audio response - so I think its a trade off. To be clear I'm certainly not saying the DNR on the 870 is anywhere near the FTDX10, or 5000. Its strange though- in my own AB tests like this video (weak cw) I have not found a signal I could copy on the dx10 that could not be copied on the 590SG.

What is interesting is that the TS590SG is still a little more expensive than the FTDX10 ( 100-150 euro/$ ), I think that means the Kenwood is a good radio too.

The 590 SG is a nicer radio to use than most touch screen radios because you have lots of buttons and knobs. The DX10 Audio is better though in my opinion and it's filters are better, my Friend has one so I don't have lots of time using it but I like using it more than I did the 7300 or DX 10 but I wouldn't replace the DX10 with a 590sg for example. If someone has the 590 or 590 sg keep it. I think most people who don't care about the screen will be more than happy with the 590SG. I do not miss the 7300 one bit, audio is too poor. The 590sg has IF out so you can connect your own SDR for a full blown SDR experience using with SDR Console which is amazing software. The FTDX-10 has monitor out but resolution is very low so the waterfall looks blurry unlike the SDR console with a proper SDR, you can use Omnirig to sync the radio and computer. The 590 SG gives the best of both worlds in my opinion because it is a traditional nice to use radio with the benefit of IF out so you can have a proper SDR experience if you want, but the DX10 has a much better receiver in my opinion and much better at rejecting close strong stations. I wish Yaesu and Icom would also do this and eliminate the big screen for more knobs and buttons and have higher resolution out for proper waterfall experience. The FTDX-10 is 3rd on Sherwoods list, the 710 4th and the 590sg is 30th and the 590s is 37th and the 7300 is 23rd but I never liked the audio on the 7300 it's too harsh needing NB on all the time and I live in a low noise area. I always listen with headphones. The DX10 mouse is limited, I hope they change this in a future update and allow live typing on PSK31 and RTTY, that would be amazing.

I owned th 590S and i played a month with the FTDX10, and we own it on the club station . For weak signals i don´t remember a drastic , or even noticable difference . But when you try this in a contest or a close pileup with real big signals , thwen the FTDX´s show their capability. Not just , bust mostly, in CW also in SSB . Still the 590 is good radio in the compact class, no doubt. What i like is that you show the result and doi no talk blablabla ...which is common to ham made videos..
@kd8opi
@kd8opi 2 года назад
Honestly I don’t hear much difference; but it also confusing as to which radio the audio is sourcing from- so better production (like a dot over the radio the audio is coming from) would have been helpful. Anyway according to Sherwood, the real measure isn’t sensitivity to weak signals (most radios are so sensitive your local noise floor in suburban areas effectively wipes out the measured theoretical sensitivity), it’s close-in blocking/dynamic range. In other words, being able to separate a weak signal from a stronger adjacent one.
@johnarcher9480
@johnarcher9480 2 года назад
Well, that is the measure of one who is into contesting on CW. For others, there are better attributes to look at.
@kd8opi
@kd8opi 2 года назад
@@johnarcher9480 I agree, but sensitivity isn’t typically one of them. Personally, noise blocking/blanking, easily adjustable/visible filter widths, and a pan adapter are clutch. But, the way Rob Sherwood explains it, A lot of radios he’s tested over the years had excellent “sensitivity” but we’re horrible performers on CW because they couldn’t reject adjacent signals. He basically changed the way QST reviews radios. Search RU-vid for a lecture he gave a few years ago at a ham fest, maybe Dayton. It’s pretty impressive. Kind of dry, but it basically explains the science behind his ratings.
@o00scorpion00o
@o00scorpion00o 2 года назад
@@kd8opi all the performance and sherwood tests are meaningless in my opinion if the audio is harsh or poor as I found it with the ic-7300. The FT-891 is a far better sounding radio ( with headphones ) and it's receiver is a lot better too at rejecting strong signals.
@kd8opi
@kd8opi 2 года назад
@@o00scorpion00o I don’t have a dog in your fight, but the Sherwood tests aren’t meaningless. They give you some objective data; subjective impressions (audio quality, ergonomics, the look or feel of the radio) and preferences play a role too. I’m happy you’re happy with your purchase. That’s all that matters in the end.

Weak CW is much better when you select Amber screen on the 590SG. 😉 NB & ANL on the 590SG is better than the 10. The FTdx10 added too much distortion to my ears. The DNR is better on the 10. The SG has too much warble. TU👍

I agree with everything you say here, I keep the 590 NR below 4 to avoid warble. dx10 gives me listener fatigue, the 101D less so, the 590sg none at all!
@dondonaldson1684
@dondonaldson1684 4 месяца назад
@2E0RME love this comment, that warble is probably due to the way DSP is done. Fatigue is subjective, but you are correct. The Kenwood let's you adjust audio settings on the fly, one button or control, the Yaesu requires menus which can be cumbersome. The build quality on the Kenwood is better and the chassis heatsinking is far superior, meaning better long term reliability.
