Yaesu’s last two FM C4FM mobile radios are crippled if they are installed in a vehicle that travels further than the shopping center. I have 17 separate memory banks programmed in my FT5D. They are made up of multiple counties/large cities in my home state and vacation locations in four states I visit. Very close to three hundred separate memories. Now try and maintain or use these frequency channels on a FTM-200 or 300 with All, VHF, or UHF. I carry multiple SD Cards when traveling with the 200. As far as memory management Yaesu seems to have forgotten what “mobile” means. These two radios are best left bolted to your shack desk for local and PDN use.

Yaesu has long missed the boat on this. Since the early days of programmed radios, Motorola had modes (channels) and zones (groups) with front panel group selection like "telephone" or "work" or "ham". Only the FT7900 had this capability. Even if you could scan by memory tags it would help. Or even change the useless PMS to scan memory channel numbers instead of VFO frequencies. I duplicate geographical areas into groups of 100 channels on my FT8900 with many of the same frequencies but different tags. The 8900 "hyper" memories are crippled startup profiles which exclude memory choice. At least on the FTM400 you can see tags on both receivers and on FTMs you have the memory card. You are correct, most amateur manufactures have never understood mobile. @ ham r. h. thanks, please don't call a spectrum display a waterfall, it confuses new hams. 73

What was your deciding factors that you chose this one over the 300 or 400? I watched a video John Kruk did on the similarities between the 200 & 300 very interesting, seems like the biggest difference would be the full duplex of the 300.

Thanks for watching! Even though the price is very close budget was a factor. I figured nothing critical was missing from the 200's function capabilties and I would spend more on antennas. Yes full duplex is a difference AND you get crossband repeat if you step up to the 300.
