Yagyu Koichi Sensei and his students demonstrating Yagyu Shinkage-ryu Kenjutsu during the 42nd Nihon Kobudo Embutaikai held at the Nippon Budokan on February 3rd, 2019. The event also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai.
Yagyu Shinkage-ryu (literally "School of the New Shadow") is one of the oldest Japanese fencing schools of kenjutsu. Its main founder is Kamiizumi Nobutsuna. In 1565, Nobutsuna left the school to his greatest pupil, Yagyu Munetoshi, who added his own name to the school. Today, Yagyu Shinkage-ryu remains one of the most renowned schools of Japanese fencing.

The sausage that you are calling Manfred my man is a shinai (split bamboo, encased in leather) a replacement to the real katana insure that no practitioner get killed, the stomping of the feet is to emphasize the snap of the shinai (cut) and let the audience know.

It was literally meant as a spear throwing technique with the sword, but it's a demo so you're not supposed to REALLY throw it lol

Yeah- the sword-throw move is done spear-like in actual use, but it’s thrown sideways during demos and when using bokuto instead of fukuro-shinai to prevent injury.

はい、いわゆる形で、動作(=ストーリー)は決まっています。打太刀が仕掛けるのに対して、仕太刀が何かホニャホニャして勝つ、という流れです。どんなふうに勝つのか、なぜ勝ちだと言えるのか、後から動いてなぜ勝てるのか、などか面白いところになります。

Paul Abarquez You mean they shakes katana for several times? If so, it’s to know the opponent’s timing and position first. We can know the enemy’s intention by this movement. Of course, this is in practice only. After shaking katana, yes, the next movement is a kind of trolling. It affects the opponent’s unconsciousness.

Those giant sausages that they use sure wobble around a lot more than Bokken. Why do they use them? Even though the one man blocked effectively, he was still getting hit in the head with the other guy's wobbly sausage. After watching this it seems like Yagyu Shinkage-ryu Heiho Kenjutsu translates into something like "stomping forefoot wobbly sausage way" .

It's a practice tool (fukuro shinai) that was designed for two reasons, one was the possibility of actually striking your partners without hurting them (can't really do that with a bokken - not for long anyway), the other was to allow people to fence in earnest safely. With a shinai, you can strike directly at the other person's body, you don't even need protection, you can feel these hits (both ways) and have a different sort of commitment. Note that these were developped in the late 16th c. at that time it was a very novel tool. Obviously, they also use bokken and shinken. It's just different tools to train different things. Also, I know this is trolling but Shinkage-ryu is like the most influencial and well known japanese fencing school, if you don't know about it, you really don't know much about japanese fencing. "Stomping forefoot wobbly sausage way" would be something like 踏揺腸道 - Tōyōchōdō. But you'd run the risk of meaning "urging yourself at the feeling of troubling bowels".

木刀は5’33からの「燕飛」だけ。それまでは袋竹刀。

最初に出てくる若い二人の用いているのは木刀ではないようだ。安全のためでしょう。ゴムか何かを用いた模擬刀みたいな感じがするな次に出たご高齢の上級者が用いているのは間違いなく木刀だな古流では木刀を稽古に用いていたから、いまの剣道で普通に行われるような試合は、上級者以外は禁止されていました。また、試合でも寸止めで行われることがルールでしたよ。寸止め抜きで行われる。かなり危険な試合が行われる事もあったようですがねそれに形による稽古が中心となっていたようですねあと、おっしゃる通り、実際に木刀を用いるのですから、形による稽古も危険がありますから動画の形は、見た目ほど容易なものではないでしょうね
