You who ski this area are living the dream. I dont ski, but I am an avid hiker/ backpacker and in the summer Shuksan Arm and surrounding area is one of my favorite haunts. Not to be a downer, but for those who havent been here and want to come, this video doesnt emphasize why there are stringent regs on using this place. The folks in charge really want to know that you know how to take care of yourself because this place has taken many lives. Back country skiing in the Cascades in general is not to be taken lightly. It is not for the novice. The caption noted 95 feet of snow in 1998 and that is not the current record at Baker. Mount Baker holds the worlds record for annual snowfall at just under 100' of snow. That's a lot of snow and coupled with the Northwest weather tradition of freezing and thawing repeatedly it translates into tree wells and extreme avalanche danger. So not to dwell on the negative, just really want folks to be safe up there. This really is some of the best backcountry experience around.
Just saying, there really is no skiing on Mt Baker. The lifts are on Shuksan Arm. Mt Baker is about 4 miles to the south. You can get to Baker from the south side and ski but it really isn't a lot fun compared with the lift area and Shuksan Arm. Baker has a bunch of glacier ice and crevasse.
