Yale University says it "admonished" a white student for calling campus police when she found a black student sleeping in their dorm's common area. Facebook videos of the incident have been viewed nearly two million times. It is the latest example of a black person reported to authorities for doing something legal and ordinary. Jericka Duncan reports.

I am older and white and I am not into these sugar- coating terms I believe in calling something what it is and that girl is a racist there is no other way to put it. For number one the girl lived across the hall so common sense would say she knew her so there was no other reason to call police. Number two she was sleeping so how was that disturbing her. So with all due respect there was nothing Micro about it she was a straight up racist end of story. I often wonder when people stand before God how are they going to defend their hate for their fellow man!
@kyjo72682
@kyjo72682 6 лет назад
Melicia Dennis How was she racist? Did she mention even once she called the police because the person sleeping there was black? NO. She called them because there was someone who she didn't know sleeping in the common area -- which she thought wasn't allowed. The only ones who's calling people "black" and "white" are the racist reporters trying to stir up a racial conflict so they get more views.
@kyjo72682
@kyjo72682 6 лет назад
That's pretty circumstantial. How do you know she wouldn't call police if there was a white person sleeping there? Allegations without proof. And the "journalists" are doing this on purpose to instigate conflict and create drama to attract viewers.

yea no...Civil rights doesnt excuse frivolous and malicious phone calls to police over matters that are not illegal. @Alvan81
@Alvan81 6 лет назад
Can't kick her out-but I think they can demand she apologize for violating whatever Yale student code is. Also given that she KNEW the woman, if she called police & lied that a homeless person was there- then she made a False Report to Police. That may be something you can discipline her for. This was in effect 'SWATTING'(lite).
@upat65
@upat65 6 лет назад
I don’t think kicking her out is the solution. It’s just an easy way to bury the problem or worse yet spread it because you know there are plenty of people in this country willing to support and validate her actions. I think an honest and frank talk between these two students is a better idea.
@upat65
@upat65 6 лет назад
Richard Andrew Crosby Dude, take a seat, take a chill pill and a deep breath and if necessary, a reading comprehension course. There was *NOTHING* in my comment validating the white student’s behavior. Rather, my point has to deal with what punishment she receives. The school says she was reprimanded, but they didn’t specify what the entails, so who knows if that’s enough. Others are suggesting she be expelled. But in today’s political climate, that may have the unintentional effect of gaining sympathy for her by like minded people (just to reiterate: *I’m NOT one of them*). Publicly outing her is fine, but I’d like to see her prejudice truly confronted. She has to realize the hurt and frustration she caused. An open and frank discussion between the two students may help.

It is how college admissions works here in reality. They made up some term like wholistic applications in lieu of affirmative action. Asians had to sue to have that injustice addressed. If you really believe all races have an equal distribution of intelligence, well, all your other jibberish then makes sense. Every form of cognitive assessment ever administered has demonstrated racial differences. Get with the program honey.

I think people have missed an obvious point. Looking at the video both women live either side of the entrance to the elevator. So they're neighbours and 'known' to each other. The White student is obsessed with the Black woman. She probably heard the Sista close her door and walk up the stairs, but didn't hear her return. Why else would she be patrolling the common room at 1.30 am and switching on lights? She was obviously looking for 'someone' and hoping to find that 'someone' in a compromised position, which will give her the necessary excuse to exploit the situation to cause trouble. We also know the same White student called the police on the Sista's Black friend a few months earlier who was, incidentally, standing on the same stairwell as seen on the video. These people are evil...

Let me get this straight. Three cops show up and this black student unlocks a door to a college apartment door. Hands them an id and thats not enough to confirm who she is. Whatever!!! We don't need sensitivity training. We need to start treating everyone the same way we expect to be treated.😒😡

No you're partially correct. Keys can be stolen (has happened on my campus, even had a former student waving a knife around campus). They asked for her ID since it would help them match her identity in the school system. But she used a nick name on her ID instead of her birth name which caused them to have some confusion over who she was. That's why it took so long to verify her identity. And if you watch the full encounter instead of a heavily edited one, you'll notice that each cop she met was trying to be polite, and the first thing the supervisor told her was that she was safe and that nothing bad would happen to her. They only got annoyed after she started to blame them because they were fed a false story by her neighbor.

They were checking her for other things to arrest her for, which is BS. That should not be allowed and they should be reprimanded and written up along with the girl that called getting noted as a repeat caller and she needs to be talked to instead of this girl for 15 minutes and have her information scanned and let her know if she calls again without reason she will be fined and could face jail time. So much for an inquiring or even congenial introduction and conversation. 4. The white student has unaddressed personal problems and should be fined or charged. 5. She owes the black students (yes, she has done the exact thing with the exact same outcome before) an appology. 6. This behavior goes against almost every University's code. Disciplinary action should be employed now: a school official should sit her down and inform her of the school's expectations and tolerances and what action will be taken going forward and provide her with info for any applicable resources to better equip her in this new environment as a young adult.

I don't understand the way the cops react to this. The initial act that started this chain reaction was a student calling the cops to report that someone whom she believed was not a student sleeping in a common area. If the cops had asked her what made her think that this was an unauthorized person, they would have known that there was no good reason to justify her calling the cops. As such, the whole "investigation" should have stopped then and there, and the person calling the cops should have been admonished that she had called the cops out of frivolous reasons. The victim here should not have to prove her innocence. The burden is on the person calling the cops. The police should have asked the victim if she would like to file a complaint. This act of complaint would require the victim to provide her identity. In the end, the cops would have gotten the information they seek from the victim. However, the dynamics in this scenario would have been completely different because the victim would have felt that she was respected and given the dignity. There are ways to obtain the needed information without resorting to bullying the person from whom you want the information. The old adage is true that it's better to catch flies with honey than vinegar. No one feels comfortable dealing with the police, especially when they are the being accused of a crime. That accusation alone already puts them on the defensive and feeling helpless. Whatever the police officers receive in the police academy is wholly deficient in the psychology of victimhood. A smart and sympathetic cop goes a long way in helping the accused. Weird how TV cops shows always show the good cops being the most compassionate human beings on Earth. That is until you and I have to deal with them in real life.
@MrTREEHUNTER22

Watch the full video. None of the police there are hostile and are very casual in their conversations with her. The supervisor's first words to her is that she's safe and not in any danger. When you investigate a suspected crime you don't just ignore the suspect. The quickest way to corroborate either side is by checking her ID to verify that she lives there. Her ID had a nickname instead of her real name on file which is why it took so long to confirm her identity. Cops were nothing but cool even though the vcitim started to blame them for doing their jobs. Whole encounter was less than 20 minutes, couldve been shorter if she was more cooperative and less prejudiced towards cops.
