In this video Corin prepares a collected silver birch ready for bonsai training.
After removing from the pot he addresses the roots and removes any unnecessary growth.
As the tree was collected it also has a few cut marks so these are neatened using carving tools and the tree is set up for future bonsai training.

WOW! Ambidextrous, simultaneous wiring at ~ 25:09!!! Something new for my eyes! Speaking of eyes, PLEASE remember eye protection when carving, sawing, cleaning with compressed air for yourself and assistants. It’s scary watching with your eyes vulnerable. Thank you. Quite a transformation.

Your an amazing artist Corin. I really enjoy your ability to quickly, efficiently, and skillfully, get on with things. The way your able to explain as your working sets you apart from most other bonsai artists. Thank you for all your amazing videos, and especially your superior works of art. If I ever make it to Europe, it will be to see your studio first.

Sometimes bonsai is making something beautiful out of a stump with some little side branches. Give this birch a few years and it will be a beautiful tree. Updates in future please....ofcourse a like as always. 👍👍👍

Morning, as you go into Spring, we are heading into Autumn> There is a different smell and feel to the air. Thank you for sharing another well-thought-out presentation, I am looking forward to seeing its progression. Nice to hear John Innes composts are still being used. I have not heard of it being used since I did my training 50 years ago in the UK. Stay well.

This was a ripping video Col, going to be a great tree in future. I was amazed how you were able to bend the tie down wires to the exact distance to fit into the bottom holes of the pot without measuring them. And how about the simultaneous two hand opposite direction wiring job! Keep it up buddy!

All my seed grown silver birch get the silver color in 10years just like in nature and the black come in at the buttom after 15years like in nature, only problem is the age i never seen one looking healty over 90years or 100years in nature or in pot after 60-80years silver birch just starts dieing slowly no matter what you do

In nature it’s a pioneer species - colonises bare ground and improves fertility then dies off as longer lived species take advantage. This may be relevant

Very nice and educational 👏🏼👏🏼thanks Corin. One question; when carved out the cut looked a little like the bottom could hold some water like a “cup”. Is that not a risk to leave at the top of the trees trunk? Keep up the good work!

Another brilliant video look forward to seeing the updates once it comes into leaf. Out of interest you said you didn’t want to put it in the next size pot, would be interesting to know why as in my novice mind I would have thought the bigger the better so the roots had more room

I just potted 15 silver birch seedlings in to a Bonsai Forest. In the video you mention they need to be in the ground for a few years to develop the colour. How long do they need to grow in the ground do you reckon? If they stay in the current pot, they will not get the silver colour? Keep up the great work. As a beginner, I find your videos extremely helpful. Cheers

Surely Betula pendula suffer serious dieback if they're pruned when not in active growth. From the pruned branches all the way down the trunk and through the connected roots.

Don't forget this was only the first of many stages to make this a future bonsai. Keep an eye out for updates on this tree later in the year.
@petergrisdale6797
@petergrisdale6797 2 года назад
This is how many deciduous bonsai are started, field grown to thicken the trunk then chopped right down to a stump/trunk then encouraged to backbud to provide the very start of the branch selection process, it can take many years just to get to this point then many more years to get a good branch structure to work with then even more years until you get a good ramification on the branches to finally create the bonsai image that you are use to seeing 😉
