I've had 3 King Bee 2's apart. As far as I can tell, they've fixed the buzz problem, which was caused by overpainting and generally poor-quality control. I think their launch batch was some kind of pre-production run or something, because my bad launch KB2 doesn't even have a serial number on it. The later sample is much better built and has no paint problems. Neat also had good customer service when I was solving this problem at launch. If you have a buzzy bee, you can fix it by opening the mic and sanding or scraping the paint off the body-body contact points, which is not hard. There needs to be conductive metal to metal contact between all parts of the body, so the body can be a good faraday cage. There also needs to be a good electrical path from the microphone to the XLR cable. Overpainting/poor body grounding isn't just a problem with neat microphones right now. Recently I've had a similar (but far less noticeable) problem with both a Shure SM57 and a standard-color sE V7 picking up 60Hz recently, because of overpainting. My chrome body sE V7 actually sounds noticeably better than the painted version, because the chrome plating is conductive.

Thanks, you put THAT one to rest! I think this is like, the ONLY video review of that YCM, and you're right, it's not just disappointing-- it's lousy! I personally didn't care for the PGA181, I thought it was only marginally better. I didn't much like the King Bee 2 either; I actually thought the Worker Bee 2 was better! I have the original King Bee (with the cool stripes), and it sounds way better. The Blue Ember was a surprise. I too have 2 original tangerine Blue Sparks, and I agree, they're really nice! I really like them on guitar amps and background vocals. I also have a Blue Baby Bottle, but now I'm debating on if I should sell it, because my new UT Twin87 has just about blown away everything else!

The Yamaha sounds quite thin. Almost like a USB microphone, ie the Blue Yeti. The King Bee 2nad Blue Ember sound quite nice. I can see the appeal of the Shure PGA 181 but I think it might be too bright for a higher pitched va (just a guess though)

The 181 is very articulate. Thanks for the comment.

lol that intro :D Blue Ember and Neats offerings always sound good to me. Yamaha’s YCM-01 just sounded thin and lacklustre. It sounded like a very cheap mic.

The PGA181 is actually an electret condenser, too, as are several other highly regarded Shure models

That thing looks like a personal massager. Schwing indeed. I don't hate the sound for a streaming-type scenario. It's kinda weak in off-axis rejection and pop resistance though, two things someone in the market for a mic in this price range really needs to to take into account. If they're going to use it for live stuff they probably should consider the cost of an appropriate shock mount as well.

It's hard to find a good electret capsule for a microphone. There's nothing stopping companies from making a good one, but the majority of what's easily available to manufacturers are low-cost jellybeans with inferior quality. But they can easily run on 5 Volts, which is why almost every USB microphone uses one. These cheap capsules really hold a lot of USB microphones back from being good, especially when they come from companies rushing into the lucrative "looks good on camera" or streaming market. Not a lot of companies are going to put the work in to custom design a good electret capsules just to chase a trend. They just buy something off the shelf and put it into a case that they hope kids will think looks cool. That's a long way of saying the YCM-01 is probably built like a generic/cheap "me-too" USB microphone, so it's going to sound like one. But it won't need a full 48V of phantom power. It would probably still work if somebody had a way to gender bend the microphone into plugging into their computer's 3.5mm mic input, so it's got that going for it. The light probably wouldn't tun on, though.
