Been with Sweetwater since 2008. Every bass I bought from them was set up perfectly. I wanted the TRBX 304 in mint green, but they were out of stock. Placed the order and my rep says they will get them in April or early May.
I've learned a hell of a lot from you Dave just by watching and learning. I have 3 bass guitars and still trying to learn. My Yamaha is the one i usually go to because its the one that feels right to me, its not the active one that you show in this vid. Just keep up with the great vids and i will keep learning to the point that i might get to be an actual bass player someday.
It's a TRBX 304. I got mine over two years ago, new, with no issues. Then again, I got it at a Sam Ash store. Must have had a decent set-up in house. Needed minor adjustments only. Sounds great for the price! Currently my backup.
Hi Dave.... it's very possible that that Bass was "hanging around" for a few years. I got a Tobias Bass ($2000) that was "Hanging around" for a few years. After bass hung around for a few years, the neck started to forward bow, as it settled in. I got it home, and snugged up the truss rods (2) and got it to the "almost straight" position that was desired. The Tobias was a fantastic instrument.... A friend of mine bought an Epiphone bass that played very well when new. After a few years, the neck relief made it look like this Yamaha. In my experience, necks will settle in over the first few years of life, and will need some truss rod tweakage.
Looks like some common parts in a Harley Benton P450FL I bought recently ... But that was 148EU and was surprisingly well setup by Thomann. The fun started when I swapped for Jim Stinnetts preferred LaBella black nylon tape wound BUT thanks to all Dave's videos I was able to reasonably set up and intonation for my Brexiting nation. Feels great now :-)

Thats a trbx304. And its a sweet sounding and playing bass for the price.
Beautiful bass, I have a yamaha 1993 rgz that has the nicest feeling neck. It's in pieces right now, wish you were closer Dave! And, yes girls are watching, thanks for the videos....rock on!!
I just received one of these models, the one you're working looks like a TRBX304 the one I just received I believe is the same model but a 2022 model) and I could find nothing wrong with it and they no longer put the plastic with knob names on it. I own a Lakland which will cost about 1,800.00 and this guitar plays just as well but the sound is different and the Lakland of course has hardwire that is superior and I'm sure the electronics are superior but as I said I love this guitar for the price. Maybe they've improved on the product.
I think that is a TRBX304... I almost bought one last week! Decided to spent a lot more and get a StingRay that was perfectly setup. Dosen't seem like a bad bass, just need some setup love! Love your work Dave, learning a lot!
Nice and informative video Dave... you don't seem too awful grumpy tonight... may I ask, how many beers did it take to get to that point? I need some of that medicine, lol ........ Thanks for your work and sharing my Canadian friend.
Yamaha makes good quality stuff for the price more often than not. My EG303 is still a guitar I play very often as a solid backup Strat. Cost me $55 on Ebay!
Dude - I first discovered you when didn't understand how I "blew up" my recently acquired Carvin IC4 - reversely inserted both 9V batts (I have to admit I was in an altered state!) - and you accurately described what happens to an opamp chip when you do that without the benefit of reverse current diodes (love the guitar but pissed at that oversight on Carvin's part). Cost me $80 (including installation of a diode!!) but that's reality when you are stupid. Rock and roll
Just got a new TRBX174. Very sturdy, neck actually has some meat to it! Damn fret ends were actually better finished than my MIM P! Strong P/J pickup set too. These are real sleepers at the price!
You need a roll of carpet on a dispenser to cut a fresh clean layer of carpet for your desk every day. Don't think me, I have these great ideas all of the time.
Hey Dave, What is the name of that song playing at the end of the video? Love your videos and the commentary!! Haha! Where would you suggest I buy some tools for working on my guitars?
Dave, I have seen Fender and other makes in music stores just as bad as this, so it's not a Yamaha thing ! In fact, any Yamaha I have seen for sale are well setup. PS love your videos
Hi Dave, i went to a ace freely gig, & on the way stoped at a garage sale, & found a yamaha bass for $40. '' great deal '' but the next day i try'd to do a setup on it, now i now y its was $40. ya- it needs fret work, new tunners, new strings, & pickups + a new bridge, but if i can get the parts cheap on ebay.com just maybe ? i can fix it ? thanks for the cool vids, from tony maz.
Yep...Leo started the active craze. I'm the proud original owner of a 1977 Music Man Stingray but rarely play it. For some reason I always go back. to playing a passive Jazz bass. Might be because of all the dead batteries that end up in a landfill.
Leo got it right cause he constantly made changes until it was right. Most of his guitars didn't work at all at the beginning. (You can read up on it if you stay away from the glorious fender books) He did some great work, but there is always trial and error involved.
I've got one of those Dave, its a TRBX 304 though i I must have been lucky as the frets on mine are fine, I did however have to lower the string height, other than that its been just fine
I find most Basses come factory with the action way too high. I went into a Long & Mcquade a little while ago, they had a brand new american Geddy Lee signature and a brand new american Flea signature, both of them played like complete dog shit because the setup was so wacky.
A lot of people are still critical of new American Fenders, but seeing this video makes me appreciate mine just a bit more. However, I tried an Elite down south and the edges of the fretboard were kinda shady, so the stories of quality control are true. Lucky mine was pristine.
SHADOWBEAR82763 i still use the same 2 rechargeable 9 volts i bought 10 yrs ago. Unless the passive bass has onboard EQing then it's not articulate enough for my taste.
Their stuff is good but it's very expensive. There isn't one clear cut alternative, but if you shop around, you can find a lot of the tools you need cheaper elsewhere.
Or you could get as lucky as I did and get a Warwick Corvette for the same price as this set up and delivered to my house ;) Passive all the way though man! Even though I own a Sire V7 which takes 2 9v batteries I mostly stick it in passive mode and put that sexy Jazz bass tone to good use
Cheap basses better shouldn't be active. A cheap pre-amp adds noise, has limited dynamic range and consumes batteries. Instead the money could be spent to remove sharp edges from the frets.
inthepocket the older bb from 2012 were big hit,I got one, also got the TRBX504,which is a killer bass too, sooon im getting the newer BB 734A ,and that too is one hell of a bass,I dont mind the plastic battery cover at all,as Dave said put a dock tape and problem solved.
