Yamaha Crossplane Crank - Why the R1 Sounds Like That

My favorite supersport. A rather physics heavy explanation as to why the 2009 and up R1s have such a unique sound despite having an inline 4 engine like the rest of them.

Thanks for the shoutout, that video was awesome! the right mix of technical/not technical narration and collection of illestrational videos. I didn't pay much attention to the Yamaha video with the inertial torque because I assumed it was just tehcnobabble written by the marketing department and was busy squinting at the super low res picture to confirm the crank configuration/firing order but now it makes perfect sense, I had the wrong preconception as a non-rider as I read an explanation of "big bang" firing order that basically said even firing "screamers" tend to wheelspin if they break traction, but uneven firing "bangers" will regain traction after breaking it, I suppose this is partly right but the rotational inertia comes in to it too. Interestingly some riders prefer Inline 4s and some prefer crossplane 4s. Takes all sorts I guess. Engine balance (as felt externally) is a whole other issue, I have a better picture of why flatplane I4s "shake" like they do now, this is probably better investigated in inline twins as all sorts of crank angles have been tried with them with all kinds of results. Your overlay of the flatplane/crossplane videos shows the difference in firing interval very well, my editing skills aren't at that level yet.

The tolerances of a motorcycle engine are much higher than a car engine. Ever wondered why a Nissan micra with a 1 litre engine has about 1/2 to 1/4 of the power of a motorcycle engine 1 litre? Tolerances my friend
6 лет назад
wrong. It's the state of tune..comp. ratio, camshafts, valve size, throttle body(s) emissions, drivability, etc. Cars need a much broader , and lower rpm torque/horsepower curve.
@georgecollins17
@georgecollins17 6 лет назад
Al you right however so was I. All the things you mentioned require higher tolerances and you wouldn’t see a Ford Focus with compression ratios of a motorbike and the power to weight ratios of course play a part. At the end of the day motorcycle engines are designed to higher tolerances because they are not built to go to Tesco’s, they’re made to be on a track or caning it down a motorway. (Most anyway)

@TheTomco11 6 лет назад
My guess would be that in a 600 all the power is at the top, and the cross plane is inherently less balanced, so they kept the flat plane to keep the rev limit as high as possible.
@BuffMyRadius
@BuffMyRadius 6 лет назад
@@TheTomco11 the flat plane has better primary balance so it will be smoother up to the mid-range, but the crossplane has much better secondary balance so it should be happier at high rpm.

Great explanation, man! It is so literal but no one else had explained it clearly. Keep it up!

I watched tons of videos and tried to read all kinds of text about the cross plane crank on the r1 but I never could completely grasp it. You hella put it down for me in a way I could grasp it, thanks b😉

Great video, excellent job at explaining the concept. The thing with the lights/clicks and tacho was genius too.

I have a FZ 09 and I love the cross plane concept. It’s the one in my thumbnail. This video was suggested to me and I am so glad that it did get suggested because I liked and subscribed! Can’t wait to see your other stuff

I am admittedly new to the bike scene however this video was great. Thanks for taking the time to explain this in length to folks in relatively simple terms.

After a while, I finally watched the entirety of this video, and was a really interesting watch!! I recently made a motorcycle company as my entrepreneurship project at school, and with this I can further develop my company!! This was an insane breakdown of a simple yet complex topic, and you executed it flawlessly!!

Very well explained, with a lot of humor. Very nice to watch, although I ride a V4 myself the R1 sounds very good indeed.
