Gene, I would love it if you would show how you manually adjust the PEQ to achieve "optimal" settings in your room. You have mentioned it before but i would like that you demonstrate the curve for your room and how you fine tuned it. I think it will help us all do the same. Thanks so much!

Hi my name is Don,I bought this yamahacxa5200, do you do house calls? I live in Rochester ny, I need help to adjust my system,in my rack I have the oppo udp203,parasound A21,parasound A51,Furman linear power conditioner Elite,for speakers my front towers are paradigm 30th anniversary tributes,center channel is paradigm c55 prestige,rears paradigm prestige 25s, subwoofer jL Audio Fathom F212,over head 2 paradigm millennia ones,my system should rock I need your professional help,I hooked some up and had some help from my local stereo shop,it just doesn’t seem to be at the next level,I did the best that I could do, a year and a half ago I had a brain aneurysm burst in my brain,cAusing a stroke,when I woke after 6 hrs being stranded on the floor, I was paralyzed,lost my sight in my left eye,and suffered superego brain damage, for 4 in a half months I learned to read,write,and eventually walk again,I watch and listen to your shows you’ve been a inspiration to me to get my system running but dispite my effert s I can only go so far,I’m stranded at home audio and some tv is all I have my tv is lg oiled 65inch,when I could work I put all my overtime into building a system before my tragic life changing health mishap,you see I shouldn’t be alive,despite my disabilities I still enjoy your educational show,you’ve been a inspiration to me continue to put out these videos please! Good to see you are reviewing the 5200. I am trying to decide between the 5200 and the Marantz 7705. I have Audyssey down and I have no problem getting good results from it so I am hesitant to go to the Yamaha with its room correction. I look forward to your review to see if a change would be beneficial.

I have the Yamaha RXA-1030 quite old but is still a beast. I love it. The sound is so good, it doesn't have Dolby Atmos dts X and wireless but pure amp sound.

Great channel. Ive always wondered how a high end yamaha receiver compares to the other brands. It is really crappy that they dont provide you with a proper manual though. My favorite part of setting up a new receiver is thumbing through the manual.

Used the UMIK-1 and REW and adjusted the parametric eq under manual for the CX 5200 and all I can say is WOW... now my dual SVS PB 16s sound awesome

very nice Gene. I am building a house in North Carolina that’s almost finished I’m at the point where I’m gonna start picking out new equipment. The upstairs media room will be 5.4.1 Atmos system so I think this Yamaha will fit the bill. I’ve had so many problems with my Onkyo pre pro pr-sc5507. Two HDMI board failures.I need to get a product that’s more reliable. I’ve had Yamaha receiver’s in the past and have had zero failures. I was considering the Anthem AVM60, But after watching this video I think I’m going to go for the Yamaha. Thanks again keep up the good work.

Thanks for the review Gene. Going by the construction alone, it's a well built unit...You mention your system is 5.2.4. May I ask the reason you skipped the 2 side surround? That would work well in my specific environment, so I wonder how much I'd give up on.

I remember doing surround sound stuff back in the day. I watch TV with 2.1 stereo. I found the irony was going the stereo route cost a lot more. But that's me. I prefer music over TV. But it does look like these new surround recievers are a nice and it looks like it's not that heavy either.

Gene: I have heard you speak to some abnormally high distortion readings on the L and R output - that you ended up relaying to Yamaha- is there a fix on the way/in place? This unit has been out for some time now so this is troubling out of a $2500 PREPRO. I just lost my Marantz 7702 and was considering this unit along with a antimode 8033 for the bass side of things. Can you speak to this please? thank you.

Gene, this AV represents a very good value. Eagerly awaiting for your part II review. A question: I'm planning on expanding a 2.2 to 7.2.4. Should I be content with the Yamaha single eARC port (firmware upgrade) , or wait a year for the new HDMI 2.1 crop?

@@Audioholics Yep. It's so strange, of the 4 pre-pro's you guys recently covered, Yamaha is the only one that really stood out as an audiophile piece. Built with heft and with high quality components like the dac's and XLR etc. Puts the more expensive ones to shame.

Jean can you answer a couple of questions for me on one of your forums... 1. Is there any significant difference in the advertisements for "High end AC power cables," -- is this another spoke and mirrors show. (Some claim that they are getting better performance etc.). 2. Are all CD players made the same -- sound the same. I can see build quality being better etc. but does a player form say Denon that claims a 115 signal, $499 to noise ratio sound much better than a Marantz player, $699 that has a 110 signal to noise ratio.

I bought one off these 3 weeks ago along with the matching MXA5200 and I’ve still not switched it on yet because I’ve been wanting for various different cables to arrive but I’ve finally received them all now and I’m planning on switching it on to tomorrow should be awesome.Do you guys not have DAB digital radio over there in the states you didn’t mention it my CXA5200 does here in the uk

I can't wait to see you review the cxa5200 with mxa5200. I am saving up for those amps. I will use this combo amp for movie and music. I am sure this amp is good for movie but how about music performance? I also consider another combo( yamaha rx 3080 xlr preout with yamaha as3000) . I really want to know the movie and music performance comparison between those 2 combo.

Gene, I'm highly interested in the 2Ch Stereo Performance of AVRs cause lots of people using their AVRs as their 2Ch Stereo Systems too. But no one seems to cover this issue... All review sites/channels seem to say the same things like they are copied and pasted but mentioning nothing about the 2Ch Stereo Reproduction of AVRs ! I'll be so much glad if you can start a "2Ch Stereo Performance Criteria" in the AVR reviews. - Because people are listening to you... PS: This "new" 2Ch Stereo Performance criteria should cover all segments starting from the mid level and going up higher to the flagship models. (ex. Yamaha RX-V Line to RX-A Line)

@@Audioholics I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this as well. I've been playing with this unit for a couple of months. My last AV processor was an older Marantz 7001 unit. I couldn't get either to sound as good on 2ch music listening compared to my 2ch pre amp running to the same amp. I've tried Straight and Pure Direct. The latter mode sounded very underwhelming IMO on this Yamaha and my old Marantz units. Curious to hear what you do to make 2ch perform well.

@@waynetai3548 The CX-A5100 has a very good sounding 2CH preamp when using digital sources. I also have an Anthem STR preamp which is a different animal when playing vinyl due to the much better phono preamp. However both are similarly good, but different, DAC's IMO.

Yamaha have come a long way from there mediocre preamps processors and receivers back in the late 90s early 2000s very interested in trying them again with better results.

I have just purchased this stunning pre-amp yesterday here it retails for $3,999 but i got it for $3,100 its replacing my Denon x4300H i feel a bit of a traitor as I've always been a Denon man. I watched your review on the Yamaha cxa 5200 and i won't be taking the top off it. Great review and i enjoy them immensely.

@@cstoney427 Haven't set up the pre-amp as yet busy with work. My speakers are Krix neuphonix front, Krix epicentrix for the center and Krix phoenix for the rear and dual SVS PB 2000 subs. At the moment i have a 5.2 set up but expanding to 7.2.4.

One problem I’m starting to run into as a newbie installer. Starting with my parents house. My parents both wear hearing aids. These people want more voice clarity. They walk around the room with thier ears to the speakers and ask why is only the center channel blasting voice. We don’t want to hear all the loud booms and bangs. With a hearing aid those sounds hurt. So I’ve explored ZVOX sound bars. Audio master reprocessing. Ect ect. Setting small speakers and higher frequency, using all stereo mode. Ect ect. can I use a pre center out into an external amp and send the center to all channels like 5-7 channels. These are huge rooms with 20 feet ceilings. Yes an echo chamber. Yes I know I’ll loose sounds effects only using center for voice. But this is coming up more and more. Even in the best amc Dolby theater I hear people complain it’s too loud, and I can tell there’s no voice on the back channels in those theaters. I say screw the pretty expensive sound effects. Let’s go back to basics. People just want to get the story without using sub titles. But people are also living in larger rooms now sitting 15 feet away from the screen.

Lower production = higher production costs, also thry tend to have more premium components in them than receivers including balanced outputs.

I bought the cxa5100 + mxa5000 used from a yamaha employee's personal collection. $3100AUD for both. Not very impressed with auto tune. Love the s/n ratio. Eq is independent on every channel and not pairable left to right.

Gene, I have CX-A5000 which has height channels on it. I know Atmos is the new in thing and that it is getting great reviews on how well it processes and opens up the sound compared to a 7.1 system. But if you use the height channels in the CX-A5000 model does it have similar improvements over the 7.1 system. I have never had the opportunity to use the height channels to test this. And does the CX-A5100 or 5200 with Atmos improve the sound if you only have 7.1 system?

First question everyone watching who does not live in this world will be “ how do I connect speakers to that”. You should start off by explaining this is a pre pro that needs anouther amplifier not an all in one system. If you just want your channel directed at professional installers, then I get it. But if you want to reach the masses, well. Everyone is a DIYer now. So to reach the masses I think a short, yes annoying I’m sure, but short baby step explanation of what category this is, is necessary. I’m a home builder starting to incorporate home theaters into my builds and I’ve watched every video you have, and I literally had to pause and google different terminology as I went through them. Lol. Funny but also timely. I don’t trust the guy at magnolia home theaters to sell me. Because I know he will just push the most expensive system. That’s why I’m on RU-vid and grateful for your channel. I’ve learned a lot.

I just bought this pre/pro 2 weeks ago on a closeout sale, upgrading from the cx-a5000. While using it, I noticed that it doesn't show the surround program that it's decoding ( Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) in the front display or on the onscreen display, leaving you wondering if you're actually getting those formats. The older cxa5000 would immediately show you what format you're listening to. Also, whenever Surround A.I. is selected, you have no access to any Cinema DSP programs.

Hi,Thank you for this video, really informative. I have one query though, the HDMI ports on this set, are they HDMI 2.1 ? or still HDMI 2.0b ?? if they are HDMI 2.0b is it upgradable to HDMI 2.1 via firmware update ?

Great review Gene. I have a Marantz SR8012 is it worth upgrading to seperate will I get better proformance E.g. Channel separation and how did you find the musicality of the amplifier is it as good as the Marantz. I know that you have a Marantz 8012 in your family room and you’ve gone to the 5100 in your theatre there must be a reason for this?

I need more power in my theater room, especially for my main speakers. The 5100 makes sense in there but overkill in the family room system. SR8012 is a great receiver.

Gene, I’m on the fence with this one, I currently have the cx-a5100 and Mx-a5000, do you think it’s worth the upgrade? And if so, I remember you mentioning the 5000 and 5200 we’re almost the same. Would I be ok to just upgrade my pre/pro? Thanks

CX-A5200 weighs 33.5 lbs and the RX-A3080 weighs 39.9 lbs. Is the 6 lbs difference just amp weight?

The CX-A5200 is a processor NOT A receiver. The closest receiver would be the Yamaha RX-A3080. If you only need 9CH of amplification, get the Yamaha and save $1k. If you need 11CH, get the Yamaha and a 2CH amp from Monoprice or get the Marantz SR8012.

Personally I'd like to see the 3080 replacement unit since it's no longer available...also can my phone "screen share" to any Yamaha A/V unit? As it is now i stream my phone through my tv then to my 3000.

my marantz av 7702mkii is broke after just 3 1/2 yrs of use. not sure if I want to get it repaired or just get another preamp, don't want to go with a marantz after this experience. considering this yamaha unit or anthem. so frustrated that my marantz could break that fast.

Like the new format. Could you do some systems for apartments. Can't have the big sub, not much over 80db or you get a phone call from the front office. So looking for systems where I can do critical listening at medium volumes without having to put on headphones

Try Pioneer SPFS 52s...BS22..SP-C22...SP-T22A-LR...for the boom...Sony SA-SC9 ...if you can get away with a deeper boom...Klipsch SW-112 or the new SPL 120...power it with a Denon or Sony 1080 or it's equivalent....you don't need to blast the system to hear clear and immersive sound....

Gene - question unrelated to this processor... I plan on using something like this for my main media room, but also have a Great room that will just be a 65 TV and probably a 5.1.2 system - don't consider it a serious theater system. In the room you are in there what are you using for receiver/amplification?

Marantz SR8012 running 5.2.4. You don't need to go to that level, get a Denon AVR-X3500 or Marantz SR5013.

HI GENE PLEASE HELP. Just got my Marantz AV8805 pre/pro and Emotiva XPA 11 Gen 3. Using XLR cables from pre amp to power amp (running 7.2 channels). I ran Audyssey room correcting and it told me all my 7 speakers (not Subwoofers) are out of phase. I know for sure I hooked up everything correctly. What should I do? Thank you Gene

I would like to know if the PEQ is still a fixed selection or if the frequency can be freely set. In the 2060 I had the PEQ was limited to certain frequencys. My room has a huge boost at 54hz and I had to do lots of trickery with the mains and subs distance settings to null that peek down because the PEQ was unable to affect the 54hz the way I need. So I sold the 2060 and bought an Emotiva XMC-1 because the XMC-1 has a freely adjustable PEQ. However the XMC-1 has it's own quirks, mainly in the handling of HDMI which is annoying. COMMON Yamaha free the PEQ!!

Unfortunately they are still fixed frequencies but thry do go down to 15Hz now thanks to me constantly bugging Yamaha to change this. Yes Emotiva had HDMI issues which can be a PIA.

Yes, I upgraded from a RX-A1070 to the CX-A5200 with an Arcam PA720. I noticed a difference, especially for 2 channel music listening.

I have a Yamaha RX-Z11 i bought in 2007 set up as a 7.2.4 system that still works like a dream. Can I use the second HDMI output of this model (CX-A5200) to HDMI 1 on my older rig to use it as the power amp? Instead of having to purchase the MX-a5200? Do you think that this will work or am I asking for too much?

Cant use HDMI to connect preamp to power amp. You can connect preouts of CX-A5200 to multi-ch inputs of the Z-11 to use it as a power amp though.

What? This Prepro puts out a clean 4Vrms, more than enough to drive your SVS subs to full power. Check your setup.

Audioholics both set to -10 and ran YPAO... not shaking the room unless I turn up... my dual Klipsch spl15 were more responsive... thanks for the info... going to check setup again... FYI klipsch premiere 7.2.4 and EMOTIVA amps driving everything...

Collin Moopanar problem solved. Bought a line level booster from HTD model LGB-1 and problem solved. Had to turn my SVS subs down to -25 or my house would shake apart. I am getting 1.4 mV into each sub now and OMG I will go deaf... goggle HTD LGB-1

John F John here's what you need to do and this is from svs....on the sub set volume at -5 db and run ypao it should set the sub volume on your receiver or pre at -4db...for more detailed info go to svs web for eq'ing subs, thats how i did my svs pc13 ultra and the result was great, at times you get a sense of pressure but no sound is actually heard, it takes getting used to an svs sub to i think compared to others theres no bloat or over hang its just there when it should be...one other thing, before you run ypao make sure your set the main volume to 0 db, that also makes a world of difference

At 80hz a wavelength is over 4 meters. You won't get a stereo image from that.

No but you will from bass frequencies above that. Also, some controlled experiments have revealed a spaciousness can be perceived slightly below 80Hz so the jury is still out on that.

WTF... Yamaha MX-A5200, is powered by 650w power supply and some magic pixie dust... check specifications... under powered Garbage! If you going to use all 11 channels then a power delivery is like 45w-55w/channel if you lucky.
