Amen. Excellent review. I had one question. Why no comment about an obvious increase in noise and distortion in the preamp in Channel 3 I believe.

want to say that i have learned so much that I bought my yamaha rx-a2080, klipsch bookshelf speakers b/c I don't have room for towers, and a c.d player. I need a d.v.d now. I hung 34 blackout drapery panels around my 14.5' W x 19' L room. Very minimal reflections. I have a 7.2.4 system. Yamaha RX-Z11 receiver. One sub & one transducer in my seating platform riser. Based on your review, my friend in Japan got these separates to power his home theater. He has 4 Sony’s SS-NA5ESpe bookshelf speakers + center channel. They are beautifully made, but is seemed like they’re a little hard to drive- he says it feels like a veil has been lifted from his music listening, and home theater viewing is incredibly dynamic when compared to his previous high-end integrated Denon AV amp. He is especially impressed with stereo music listening with his front L/R in bridge mode. Thanks for your hard work!

A most excellent synopsis! I love this kind of analysis! Wish I had the context to really appreciate how these measurements compare to the peers in it's class, or even that piece of junk I got at Best~Buy a few years back. It would be pretty sweet to have every amp measured and averaged into one big blurred reference curve. A dataset curve filterable by price, power, topology, and efficiency. Maybe down the line, the FTC will see it as an employment opportunity to implement new standards in consumer transparency, but until then, it's just going to be more slave work for your audio elves. Measuring every piece of reindeer shit on the planet. I suppose the average of the 5 most sold amplifiers would be a good practical reference. The Eight Reindeer of BlackFriday Massproduction if you will. People would probably buy into more up scale products if they saw the advantages soo eloquently laid out by an Influencer like you. Yamaha is clearly ahead of the curve in sending samples out to be measured and showcased. Somewhere in Akihabara is your Japanese doppelgänger cracking open a crate full of McIntosh gear to review. It was nice to hear you echoing Nelson Pass's sentiments on the importance of the first watt, can we expect to see the J2 on your bench anytime soon?

Last summer I purchased an a3080. Much better fit for both budget and more importantly, space (apartment dweller). However, I am very curious I saw on the yamaha website the a5200 dropped some features of the a3080... but other than that, what is different, what are the advantages, and how much did I lose, if anything, by going with the best combo receiver amp vs seperates? (so I know for next time)

Hi Gene, I just purchased one of these. So I should use the RCA outputs (to Bryston Amps) instead of the XLR's, correct? Or... are there factors other than distortion at play making the XLR's a better choice? Secondly, would you still recommend the 5200 over the 5100 in general? Features seem comparable, but went with the 5100 because of the advanced circuitry, assuming that would render a better overall sound. Many thanks and keep up the GREAT work!

Any news Gene on a new pair of new separates from Yamaha? i just picked up a CX-A5000 and i can't believe the quality of this product. by far the best equipment i have ever owned. I'd love to get one of Yamahas 11 channel amps but they are all sold out and people seem to be coveting them as very seldom are they up used. hoping for a MX-A5300 in 2023?

Thank you Gene, I have been anticipating this video for some time now as I own the Cxa5200 processor. What is the tradeoff of using the analog outputs for the front 3 channels instead of the XLR's? For instance, would it not play as loud or not draw the maximum power from my amp etc.?

No trade off really. In this case, the unbalanced L/R fronts measure better than the XLRs. I'd go that route but just note the voltage is 1/2 so you have to add 6dB to those channels compared to balanced unless you're using the Yamaha amp which automatically adds back +6dB to unbalanced.

What an extraordinarily detailed and informative review. Trying to make the transition from two channel stereo to surroundsound, whilst incorporating as much of my existing equipment as possible without degrading the result. I was hoping to take the front channels as a preamp output from an AV receiver to drive my existing hi-fi amplifier and speakers and then add in the rest of the kit needed. Is that going to be feasible, or is it just going to mess up the final system?

When car audio bridges an amplifier they will drive the negative side of one of the output terminals and the positive side is what becomes grounded. You can measure this with continuity on a multimeter looking for which terminal is ground. That way there is no switch and the channel that is inverted will have a180* phase shift already and permanently applied to it.

What do you consider acceptable THD+N (assuming typical profile)? I personally like to see no more than -60dBFS (0.1% THD+N) from a single component, as it’s unrealistic to have dozen of components in your chain that also have an identical harmonic profile, so you won’t reach -40dBFS (1%), which is what is roughly our audibility threshold in the upper treble.

Agreed, -60dB is where I test max power in amplifiers. -40dB can be seen on an oscope as a clipped waveform and definitely audible.

WONDERFUL review, I was looking into these very products as well as the RX-A3080. The output distortion on the front 2 channels of the CX-A5200 is too bad. I might wait to see if they release an updated version in 2020, otherwise will just get an RX-A3080.

Gene has over 50,000 dollars wrapped into his equipment and claimed not to hear the high distorted measurement. His system is high resolution and would definitely expose an audible distortion. If its below audibility, why worry? I would be willing to bet you're getting some sort of distortion measurements in your existing equipment right now... every piece of equipment you hook up in the chain adds some kind of distortion. Wether it be equalizers, processors, amps etc... Those things can be audible. I would also be willing to bet, Gene finds another problem or issues in the next model run. Yamaha hopefully can do better but none of these things will ever be perfect...

Would the Yamaha MX-A5200 be a good amp to drive a 7.2.4 setup, paired with the Denon AVR-X3700H? My concern is how well the separate amp would do driving all 11 channels? Obviously it should do better than the internal amp in the 3700H but would it be enough improvement to justify the added expense? Love your reviews btw. Top level!

Also I pulled out my trusty old onkyo just to test and verify it's not my cables. The onkyo has tremendous output without even having to touch any settings. Mind you moth avr specs indicate a 2.o volt preout voltage max.

Ditch the Denons, get the Yamaha, I have done mine, now it's your turn. After owning 2 denons, one X500 & X2300W, I thought this was the best sound I get from my Elac speakers, but I was completely wrong. The Yamaha just blew the Denon out of the water with it's FULL BODIED SOUND. The music now sounds livelier & with a strong presence in the mids. In fact all the sources sound so much better than Denon.

Probably not but will bench test the Marantz flagship that replaced the SR8012 next year. It should also have the preamp mode since I begged them for it ;)

Hi Gene, I have a question that I'd super appreciate if you could help answer. I have a Yamaha RX-A3070, using 7chs on a 7ch Power Amp, so currently not using any internal amps. Would I make any benefits if I was to trade in and upgrade to the CX-5100 (which is the same model year as 3070 so same feature set), or CX-A5200 which will be the following years feature set so will gain surround sound AI. But will there be any benefit in sound quality or anything else I'm missing, I can only think of balanced connection benefit over unbalanced benefit to the 7ch power amp. Any advice would be super appreciated :)

Does the Analog XLR inputs use the ADC or can it be just Analog straight through perhaps that's Direct mode? If its Only analog then the noise floor should be improved?

Thanks for the report, interesting. I have this set up and I have been wondering one thing: should I use an XLR to RCA connector for my subwoofers or RCA to RCA connector? It is difficult to find high quality XLR to RCA connectors, but I already have good RCA to RCA connectors. Does it matter?

If I want to use the MX-A5200 only to drive my LCR (B&W 603-new model, and HTM6) making it bridge mode for the LR and normal connection to my center, what kind of average wattage will the other channels get ? I currently have a marantz 7013 where I am planning to add this power amp just to drive the front LCR. Thanks much.

Great review 😎 I have bought the mxa5200 11ch power amp. You say to use bridge mode if possible, which makes sense. I have a 7.4.4 system, so I need 11 ch to drive everything. I do have a Rotel 1552 2ch amp, before I sell it, how would you use that with the Yamaha to get the ‘best’ result?

you could use the rotel for your sourround channels and then have room to bridge the fronts with the yamaha. or use the Rotel for the fronts and just take some load off the 5200.

It seems all Atmos processors are in the $2,500 range and up. Are there any 11-channel receivers in the $1,250 range, with balanced outputs, that can be run in preamp mode? I was considering the Denon 3600H or 3700H but they don't have balanced outputs. I'm going to use Kali LP-6 active speakers for the LCR and surrounds, and I'm worrying that it will be problematic running such long lengths of unbalanced interconnects. Perhaps if I use some triple shielded Belden 1694A it will be ok? My room is 25 foot long though.

I find it interesting your comments on bass management here, i was always under the impression if you set your mains to large, or any speaker for that matter you have no option to set a crossover as they are set to run full range, i have a rxa2070 and i cannot set a crossover when large is selected, so unless thats different with the processor im confused about what you say there.

I have a issue with my rx-a3080 that I'm hoping someone here can help me with. Seems as though this avr is limiting its subwoofer preoutput. Befor ypao I hardly had any output with amp volume knobs maxed out and avr subwoofer level maxed out. After ypao the avr set the subwoofer level to +9 with hardly enough output, I than turned up the amplifier volume knobs to max to get just enough output with no headroom. I'd hate to have to send it in for service so I'm reaching out to see if there something I missed.

Gene, wouldn't 2 Outlaw 5000's be the way to go...about $1300. I realize its single ended, but you yourself measured the 5000's to be stellar overall.

That is a compelling alternative but does take up 2 boxes instead of 1. The 5000 won't produce nearly the same output power as the 5200 does in bridged mode on those 2 front channels though. Personally, I'd go with the Monolith 11X as an alternative to this amp.
