Unfortunately, I didnt start to record the process until I was about a quarter of the way into disassembly. I wont be opening the motor up since it runs great and I already cleaned the fuel system. This will be a partial restoration and will fully video the assembly process for another video so please hit the subscribe button to be alerted to that when its uploaded.

Oh man, brings back memories, my first bike was a 74 DT250. Put that poor thing through hell, and it took it all. Only real weak area were those totally worthless drum brakes. Made you get a compression release or do the Fred Flintstone. Can’t believe it still had the original shocks on it still. I would enjoy riding one now, just to see how things have evolved

The DTs really are awesome bikes. Check out this riding video I did on this bike a few months back… 1975 Yamaha DT250: capable woods bike today? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3jX2x52GoYE.html

It feels remarkably satisfying to watch you work through the process that many of us here wish we were doing ourselves. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just a thought as you clearly work on quite a few bikes - it is worth getting a pressure washer to clean the bikes before you do any work on them to remove the bulk of the oil & dirt. Pre-soak it in a detergent for best effect and it saves so much cleaning as you strip the bike and shows up many of the issues sooner. Then as you get the components off, use kerosine and a paint brush to scrub off the bulk of the mess. It is cheap and quite effective and you just need a tray to keep the solution in - you can keep using it until it is too dirty to be effective. Sort of a DIY parts washer. You can save the spray cleaner for the likes of brake and carb parts that really need it.

Excellent idea thank you! I am waiting on some warmer weather to take the frame and a couple other parts out to degrease outside with the power washer then paint a couple things.

I have a 75 DT 250 engine that needs a home, or I need a frame for it 😂

How did you end up with just the motor?

@Garage2Trail we had these steel skip bins here at the lake, and very rich people dump anything thats taking up space, and anyway they can, so someone had no other tools or no trailer or towbar, so they used a cutting disc to disassemble two early 70's trail bikes, a Suzuki TS125 and a Yamaha DT250, was sad to see how they must have been in very good condition and totally original, but in 30 pieces where never supposed to be separated, at least it's still got front exhaust pipe and half airbox still attached with carburetor and all half cables, was a great place to go recycling ♻️ 😉

Oh wow, what a shame that people do that. Guess it’s a good place to score parts!

He often sends me parts for my 80's Honda for just the delivery fee, but one time I bought a socket set on trademe and then realized it was "pickup only" 😢, but Simon got one of his workers to pick it up and deliver it to me for just the cost of delivery, I had to ask lol, because it was way up south somewhere 😉

That’s a nice hookup to have! Our local salvage yard doesn’t even like people browsing on their own. They don’t even know what’s there themselves lol.
