Yamaha FB-01 from 1986. Another Yamaha FM 80s cult classic.
High quality&24 Hours Build Time: www.pcbway.com/
The first multi timbral sound module from Yamaha at the time, (the TX816 can be considered multi timbral though) and flexible in how you wanted to set up the midi channels and polyphony, but then the Roland MT-32 came along and blew this out of the water and the FB-01 was discontinued just the year after, in 1987. However.....
.....In the years to come afterwards, this little module has gained somewhat of a cult following. Websites dedicated to its worship came along and different genres within synth music started using it and modding it.
Mods to reduce the noise, mods to increase the output gain and other stuff.
I'm using the FB-01 editor you can find here:
sourceforge.ne...
Some of the patches I use in the video can be found here:
mmmazes.blogspo...
The demo track is only FB-01 except for the drums. All the sounds are either factory presets or sounds found through the banks above.
Cheaper than a TX81Z, but for how long?

Growing up I listened to so much synth-pop and it's only natural that my own music takes inspiration from many of the acts I loved back then. I still love them and listen to them!
Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Erasure, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, The Human League, Propaganda. FGTH, Ultravox, OMD, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha as well as loads of artists doing what is now called Italo Disco. And many more great acts like Nik Kershaw, Spandau Ballet, Wham, Dire Straits ++

SysEx editors are probably the best thing to have happened to vintage synths like this. These sounds have always been possible, but they seem to be WAY easier to (re)create, once we were no longer constrained by user interfaces designed in the 80s. Great sound, as always. 👍

I love the way each company have certain flavours, which seem to magically linger from machine to machine, whether it’s a high end synth or a more modest module. Those Bass and Marimba-esque patches have that lovely, warm-yet-plastic-sounding Yamaha feel, which instantly remind one of the DX7 or TX81z. When I was at school in the 80s, there was a boy a few years older than me, and he had been given a little box room by the head music teacher, where he had a small studio. I instantly made friends with him when I discovered that his mother and my mother knew each other, as they were both nurses at the local hospital. The poor chap couldn’t get rid of me, and most lunchtimes I would head straight to his little room to listen to him composing. I remember him having a little Yamaha module like this, plus a Yamaha drum machine, probably an RX of some description, plus a Korg Poly 800. I never did get one of these kinds of modules myself when I started making music myself, but they can deliver some lovely sounds, especially in expert hands like yours Mr Kraft!

When a man gave this one for free when I bought his D-50 for cheap 10 years ago there was no indication that this would become a classic... and also the D-50 🙂
@AttilaSVK
@AttilaSVK 3 года назад
The D-50 was already a classic in 2007, when I hunted one down for a friend of mine. On the other hand, the D-10 was dirt cheap those days, I got mine in 2006 for about 100€, but it had custom wooden side panels, new microswitches and rubber domes, plus a set of extra rubber domes. Although it wasn’t a cult synth like the D-50, I still regret selling it.

When the FB01 was released in my young days, the most astonishing feature was multi-timbrality. We didn't know the DX1 or DX5 of course (too rare and too expensive), but we knew the DX21 and of course the DX7IID/FD. Their duo-timbrality was already an awesome feature. And then came this little rather affordable module and provides up to 8 synthesizers in one (monophonic ones then admittedly). We were blown away!

Sadly I was blown away by the naffness of umpteen whirlie elec piano presets. Espen did a good job making it sound OK. But not 8 monos, by layering

In the mid 80s my setup consisted of a CZ-1000, FB-01 & MIDI soft synths on the Amiga such as sampling including my Mirage emulator. Things have really advanced, but I'm grateful for what I had at my start. The FB-01 was the poor man's DX-7 alternative. Also highly portable, and I used it with my bands for decades after.

The FB-01 is pretty good. In the 80s, a friend of mine had one. He demoed it with a sequencer of famous 80s songs when it came out, making decent FM sounds. A year later he was selling it as he needed to pay some bills. I showed interest, but didn't much much money at the time, so he asked if I had anything to trade of similar value. So I traded my Commodore 64 & disk drive which I barely touched anymore as I had an Amiga, Apple ][, Atari 1200XL and other systems. So he sold that instead and gave me the FB-01. The FB-01 for me was a much more economical alternative to adding DX7 FM sounds to my rig, which consisted of two Casio CZ's and my Amiga soft synths (including Ensoniq Mirage emulation an 30 disks). FB-01 turned out to be a great addition to my setup. It's very small & compact too, ideal for the gigs I was doing. In the late 90s, after playing a gig at the "infamous" Station Night club (the one that burnt down with 100 trapped people inside), we played a multi-band show and my gear was rushed off the stage. Friends were helping move my gear, and a crate containing my trusty FB-01 was never to be seen again. I figured, why not upgrade and buy a TX-7 which would have 6 operators and add full DX7 compatibility to my rig? So I did. I went through thousands of sounds I loaded in. I had heard rumors the FB-01 was capable of some sounds the DX7 was not. Seemed to prove true as I could not locate some of my favorite FB-01 sounds, especially some of the great sound effects like the helicopter and thunder, both of which I made great use of in my bands with a phaser pedal and reverb, and some other sound effects I could never find in DX7 format. The more musical instrument sounds I did pretty much find DX7 equivalents, like the FM electric pianos, marimba, low strings, electric organ and others I used. I decided to buy another FB-01 missing some of the sounds. My replacement did not work. So I bought another one. This one worked most of the time, but sometimes made no sound even with proper display. If I heard sound, it would work fine until I turned it off, but not trustworthy enough for a live gig. My original was rock solid. It even survived a flash flood. At one gig on a sunny day, a storm moved in with golf ball sized hail and collapsed our stage. The guitarist said not to turn anything on, and I let my FB-01 dry out for a week that was water logged. Zero problems with it. My other synths & laptop of soft synths (in the 1990s this was), made it into the house quick enough. The FB-01 is a better synth than people give it credit for. Also capable of making many of the famous DX7 sounds (but not all), and it has a few great sounds you probably won't find in DX7 sound collections, especially some really awesome sound effects I haven't found in my other synths or numerous soft synths. While an FB-01 VST does not exist (yet), I did notice on the MAME arcade emulator which emulates various components now including some synthesizers as some powered arcade machines, FB-01 emulation is now included in MAME and under the status of working, I think it said "100% working". I haven't been able to get it working so far, but did get the Ensoniq SD-1 emulator (partly working) to load, but haven't connected it to MIDI. If you use the MAME emulator, obviously unlike a VST, it will take over your PC and not run concurrently with other soft synths, a DAW, etc. If I can get it running, for my live band this could still be of some use for a song or two.

During the pandemic when I (like many of my musician brethren) was insanely underemployed, I finally dug into programming Yamaha FM synths. I’m glad I did. I have two FB-01 units installed in a weird 3 rack unit FB-01 rack mount bracket that Yamaha made. I wouldn’t exactly call this pandemic “good times” but I did have some not horrible times playing with this gear over the last year. I used my first FB01, which I got in high school, as a “band in a box” (with my Amiga 500) to practice jazz tunes on my trombone when studying music in college. I wouldn’t say it was swingin’ but it did what I needed at the time. That was the only FM synthesizer I have owned or had access to so far in life, and it made its way onto one of my solo tracks called “The Grand Deception” as a bass synth. It was usually connected in our home to one of those early Roland MIDI keyboards with multiple MIDI outs, a stackable chassis and a monophonic function. I was a kind of dunce and let the module go when I decided to part with the controller. Scooped one of these units up during quarantine. Paired it with a Yamaha R100 reverb as well as a Boss Space Echo and was immediately taken back in time. Kept me from purchasing a DX7 for now. I use to own two of them at the time which I added to a borrowed Proteus-1 and to my Juno 106. For drums I had the ALESIS HR-16. For recording I had the TASCAM 234 Syncaset. For digital sequencing I had the Roland MSQ-700. An MC-500 was borrowed from a friend at times when he was willing to part with it for a day...lol. Curiously, the FB-01 had a bass voice that had a soft to hard dynamic range. Meaning, sounding soft and if hit harder it sounded like a loud clunk. Personally I thought the FM sounds from the FB-01 were great and versatile modules. I used these on some of my original compositions for the girls gymnastic competitions which had to be strictly timed at 1 minute and 28 seconds and heavily dynamic with quick to slow musical movements as the music was choreographed with tumbles, back flips, runs, dance, etc so the music had to be very precise. This was back in the late 80's. Actual sound example here that I am referring to: The bass plunk sound begins roughly at 0.99. It is from the soundtrack for the 1986 Anglo-French cinema film Captive is the only solo album to date by The Edge, guitarist of U2. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HxBl1UJ-ur4.html

FB-01 had the same chip as the SFG-05, the second voicing unit for the CX5M. I bought an SFG-05 to upgrade my CX5M and then made an adaptor to use the older SFG-01 plugged into a regular MSX computer (JVC-MSX).
@Garflips

@@KozmykJ I'm sure that's the cartridge I'm referring to. I may have had the FB01 module as well and sold it when I got the TX81Z. Two things have always irked me (there's actually a lot more than two but...) Why didn't all computer manufacturers make the MIDI DIN connection standard? And why not have an access door on synths and modules to make battery replacement easy? I actually did retrofit my Chroma Polaris with an external battery holder for two C cells.

@stevepile8133
@stevepile8133 2 года назад
@@lxuaes6915 Hey there. To be honest, I only used the SL Mk2 to edit the TX81Z, because it has a preset template already mapped. Someone somewhere on youtube mentioned using the SL for doing the same with the FB01. You'd just have to create a template and map it, but I never got around to it, since the TX81z just is sort of a better version of this, though there are some sounds I like better on the FB01. I don't think you need a computer to do it though, I think you just need the sysex implementation chart for the FB-01 (if that is a thing) and you could create your own template? Sorry I couldn't be more help. I had intended on doing this when I typed this comment, I swear😄
@lxuaes6915
@lxuaes6915 2 года назад
@@stevepile8133 I might end up goin the Tx81z route, since there are already templates. I honestly prefer the fb01 the other two though....anyway, thanks for clearing that up fo me!
