i’ve had both of them and they have nothing in common with each other except the badge on the tank. the r6 is strongest at the top of the rev range and the mt-09 has a big torque delivery from low rpm through the midrange so it will launch harder and pull out a gap that the r6 won’t make up until it’s in 5th and 6th gear. i was surprised at how good the mt09 was and how well suited it was for daily use

Yes, I’d prefer the even cheaper mt-09 to the R6 anytime or go with the real deal “R1” in case of a super sport.

I just picked up my 2021 MT09 yesterday. My previous bike was a 2004 ZX10r and I absolutely agree with what you just said. The MT just makes so much more sense for a street bike.

@@JamieS1992 I guess?? I had a 7 year hiatus with no bikes up until 2017, when I bought a 2017 sv650, still got it, ride it like a boss and outride most people with bigger bikes in the twisties, I also now have a 2021 mt09, it'll be a while before I thrash it the way I do my sv650.

MT-09 was stretched for dragging and had a much flatter tire for more straight line traction. Wonder what it would be like if both bikes were modded the same.

Good comparison, both riders launched well, really hard to beat a R6 in a all-out drag race. Normal riding the MT09 would feel quicker though.

I’ve had both, R6 is horrible for street duty unless you’re tearing shit up. If you’re carving corners, that is the bike you want, period. The MT09 handles much more poorly by comparison, but is more fun imo and much, much more comfortable. Haven’t ridden the new one yet though.

I have an XSR900 which is basically an MT09 and used to have an 04 R6. I could actually launch my R6 better than I can on the XSR just because the XSR tends to lift the front wheel. I know the R6 has no torque, but in a way it made it much easier to launch and keep all the power down. Admittedly, I haven't really worked on launching my XSR since I'm not really trying to race these days.

Till 160 180 km/h xsr900 (2022/2023) will be front but after 180km/h the r6 will be lead the front

Shows how much better a stock R6 is... Factory swingarm and very old tyre technology running a pilot power 2ct 'hard center' rear tyre (although this might be a new tyre they came out in maybe 2006?) The hard center gave better mileage but wasn't very grippy in a straight line. Vs a MT09 running an extended swingarm and a very flat profile drag tyre. I'd expect at least 3-5 bike lengths every time at the 60ft if the 09 rider was as good as the R6 rider.

I got a 2020 MT07 I love It. I haven’t had any experience with r6 or mt09 but it’s great for daily riding, with a little fun mixed in.

I'm not too sure why everyone is so shocked that the MT-09 won, the MT has more power and they weigh the same. so subsequently the MT wins. Nothing crazy here imo. I ride a 2016 FZ-09 and wax R6's all day.

With more torque in the low rpm and what looks like an extended swing arm that MT 09 can just launch at probably pretty close to full throttle with the probability of a wheelie becoming extremely slim. Nice set up for launching stop light to stop light or a nice hwy hoon.

even without the stretched swing arm the 09 should destroy the R6 from a stand still ..... the 09 has way way more torque and it's in the bottom end too, the R6 is gutless in the bottom end in comparison and needs a load of rpm to make it's power. Game over for the R6 before the race even started ...
