Fourth and final video in a series disassembling a Yamaha MT8X Mark one multitrack cassette recorder.
Iin this episode I disassemble the upper of two halves of the unit that we separated in the first episode - this upper section includes the mixer, cue controls, shuttle controls and the cassette door.
These videos are intended as reconnaissance for anyone trying to attempt repairs and maintenance on their own unit.
For guidance on specific refurbishment tasks such as cleaning, calibration, electrical troubleshooting as well as demos reviews and recording tips using a variety of 8 track and 4 track cassette multitrackers , check out my channel.

epic, I ended up surprised this morning with a seller accepting a lowball and getting an mt8x, just ordered some new bands and I'll be watching this video over and over again, hopefully I can get the thing fixed and back together before I get your video up to 1000 views

You were right about those plastic brackets and the shield. The shallower little white spacers go between the shield and the PCB below. The black plastic splay pins go in the two upper holes of the shield, toward the back of the unit. I counted 18 screws holding in the mixer boards and rear I/0 board, all of the same type. This video was crucial. Many thanks!!

You mention toward the end of this video another video where you clean a tascam multitrack board up but I can’t find it. I’m dealing with some very crackly pots and inconsistent/dipping audio at the out puts/ inputs on my mt8x that a friend gave to me.

Hi, do you know if the Yamaha MT-100 is similar to the MT8X? I bought a broken MT-100 for like $10 but not sure how to even begin fixing it.

Although it's my intention to build up a comprehensive library of tear downs, at the time of writing I haven't looked at a lot of Yamaha stuff; I don't have any experience working with the MT100 at the moment, but judging by the case shape it seems unlikely to me the cassette player is the same as the MT8X, I think the case is too shallow for a rear mounted motor. I have opened a MT120 before, which has a similar form factor, and the cassette player was the same as a Marantz PMD740, so I suggest you look at my videos on that unit.

Hey man ! I just buy one, but it play the tape really fast on 0 pitch, where the problem may came from ? Is it hard to repare ?
@Tetrakan

It's a 3&3/4 inches per second machine so if you put on a slow speed tape 1&7/8 ips it'll play double speed, that's correct behaviour. You need a slow speed or dual speed machine to play back your old tape.

Hi, were you able to fix the unresponsive shutter simply by cleaning them or did you have to replace them?

Sorry I can't rewatch the video just now, please can you rephrase the question or jog my memory what the shutter is?

@@Tetrakan I'm sorry, I meant the shuttle buttons on the front of the machine like the play button, return to zero button,etc. I have the same issue as your machine where some of the buttons are unresponsive. I was just wondering if you were successful with cleaning them or if due to the size/low quality of each of the buttons you needed to replace them. I'm trying to decide whether to buy some contact cleaner and compressed air and clean mine out or just give it to a professional who can resolder new buttons.

@@Tetrakan If you were able to replace the buttons successfully, do you know what the dimensions of the part are and what the best modern alternative for the part would be?

I did replace the buttons, and the electrolytic capacitors on that board though as a precaution not because csimply cleaning the switches definitely didn't work. If you're looking for replacements Theyre called momentary or tactile switches, you need to match the height and width/length (same value since they are square) and pin number, check but from memory these were 2 pin, 5mm wide/long and 3mm deep, a pack of 50 cost maybe £4 from eBay.
