Yamaha Outboard - Alarm Beeping when in Neutral - Water in Fuel - FIXED

The alarm and beeping noise on my 2015 Yamaha 40 hp Four-stroke F40LA outboard was going off only while in neutral. The manual stated this was the water level sensor in the fuel filter cup, turned out the manual was correct! In this video I take apart the fuel filter cup, install a new fuel filter, flush the fuel tank and lines, and solve the issue. The control set is a Yamaha 703 Control Box.
I am sure this video will apply to many Yamaha outboards, and other outboard brands as well.
I am not a professional and know very little so please do your own research first as I may not be giving the correct advice.

Perfect video for my 225hp. Exact same issue and now resolved. I did have a water separator We installed between the bulb and the tank. Was full also. Simple fix and thanks for posting bud

Great video. You explained the proper way to remove the filter cup. Many people just unscrew and strip the sensor wires. Unplugging the sensor to avoid this is the correct method. Thanks for showing the proper way since I have a 2019 F40LA that is the same motor. Great job!!

Great video ! the root cause is usually coming form the fuel Tank condensation... you should clean your tank as well.

I thought I would answer the question on how water gets in fuel tanks. It is very simple. Moisture is in the air and air goes in your tank threw the vent as the fuel is used. The moisture then condensates on the side of the tank when the tank sits partially full. Once it drips into the fuel it settles on the bottom of the tank and gets sucked up in the pickup tube. The best solution is to fill your tank up after you use your boat not before you use the boat. Thus reducing the amount of air space when not using your boat.

Probably a result of the prior owner using fuel containing ethanol. I only run non-ethanol fuel in any watercraft I own. Never had a problem with water in the fuel.

how do you get the air out of the system? the hand pump doesn't work for me. Do you have to crack a line somewhere to let the air out?

Fixed!!! Removed the fuel bowl as in the video, removed the water, cleaned it out and reinstalled, easy, thanks again.

Ethanol fuel? Breaks down to alcohol and H20. Rec fuel is about $1 more/gallon but well worth it; especially if will sit for any length of time. Also use Yamaha Ring Free. The valves carbonize with extended idle speed/no wake zones.. It's expensive but 1oz/10 gallons.

If I am beeping as soon as rhe battery is turned on, without cranking the motor, is that the same issue?

Yes, I think so. Maybe grab the manual because I think there is a different sequence of beeps for different issues.

Thanks for posting. I'm having the same issue with my 115 hp, 2015 Yamama Outboard motor. Did you find WHY you had water mixed in with the fuel? I'm not sure how water is mixing with my fuel.

Hey. Nice video. Hopefully you see these. Did you happen to notice that the RPMs were actually higher than normal? I had this go off twice on my suzuki but only when putting it right into gear. The RPMS jumped too high for just into gear so I didn't think it was a water reading but actually rpms jumping. I had no water in either location. I did have grass wrapped on the prop so I'm thinking it was that. Why I'm asking if your RPM actually jumped higher than normal.

So I couldn’t for the life of me twist the cup off. Do they use some type of sealant to prevent it from rattling free?

I don’t think so. Do you have a pair of channel locks you can use on the cap while you hold the cup? Just be extra careful.

Condensation,often,we forget the fact that water gets in the fuel.knowingvwhat to do is critical . Always check your fuel/h2o filter.mine had h20 in in,this the alarm.emptied,filled with fresh,and good to go,no alarm

Does it need to be changed after this happens? This problem just happened to me, and I emptied out the separator, expecting to do this a few more times before all the water is gone from the contaminated fuel that was used.
