This is how to disassemble a Yamaha OX66 outboard. The Full disassembly for rebuilding an outboard. This OX66 dropped a cylinder. It will be rebuilt instead of putting on a new powerhead. If you are looking to rebuild a Yamaha Outboard, hopefully, this video will help. Also explained is, VST tank, O2 sensor, and LP fuel pumps. Among other things like the lower unit.
Yes, it has happened again. I had a lot of requests last time on showing the total disassembly so that is what I am doing this time.

As someone who's fairly familiar with motorcycle 2-strokes and automotive 4-strokes, it is WEIRD seeing those two worlds smashed together in an engine like this. I'd love to have a closer look at the ports on this thing. The spacing between the cylinders has got to create some really interesting challenges for the transfer ports on a loop-scavenged engine like this.

If the oiler goes out these Yamaha outboards it will over oil and smoke like tar kettle. It won’t blow up. I’ve been running a 2003 Yamaha 150 VMax for 19 years. You have to do regular service on them and not wait for something to tare up. They have a small filter on the bottom of the oil revisor that I change every year. Service is the key to making any outboard motor last.

I know its been 2 years since your video post but I was wondering how much money you had into the rebuild? I know you needed a new crank, gasket sets, O2 sensor, machine shop work , etc. I have a 1999 Ox66 that I bought brand new 23 years ago and spin wrenches on it myself for basic maintenance. Has perfect compression on all cylinders so far. I really like these 2 stroke 200HP and am weighing whether to repower with new engine in case this one grenades or do the rebuild. Thx for the video !
@CatchingColorado
@CatchingColorado Год назад
All in, I think about 5k. But a big cost was the crank, another was shipping the block for machining, lastly, I am picky about parts and bought good stuff. You can do it for less. Very easy motors to work on if something ever does happen.

Long hex bolts, then tons of washers between the block and the stand. This helped make a tight connection and gave room for other components.

I am considering buying the exact same kind engine, 99 V200TLRX or I am thinking if I should spend few grand more to get a newer more fuel efficient 4-stroke. What do you think, would you recommend this engine? What are the things I should look for in this engine when going to inspect it at the seller?
@CatchingColorado
@CatchingColorado Год назад
I think a newer engine is always a good choice but these engines are practically bulletproof. You need to check compression on each cylinder, I would look at the fuel filter and make sure the ring at the bottom isn't floating (indicates water). Drain a tiny bit of lower unit fluid and make sure it doesn't look frothy or milky (water in lower unit). Make sure it trims up and down well and with ease. Always water test the engine if possible

I have this exact same engine and model year 1999. I had my engine blow up on me while using it and had it rebuilt. I paid $5,000 to have it redone over 10 years ago. After wards, I used it but then had to stop using it. Finances got cut when I lost my job and was married so essentially this boat has sat unused for 12 years now. Hard to imagine but it is true. I ran the gas out of it when I first parked it. It ran fine when I stored it but after all this time, what would you suggest I do to get it back up and running? I have never cranked it one time in those years. Thanks for any suggestions.
@CatchingColorado
@CatchingColorado 11 месяцев назад
Just clean out the fuel line, check your plugs, replace filters, and get a good battery on her. If she is hard starting you can use a tiny bit of starting fluid in the throttle body but don't let her get reliant on starter fluid
