I just dragged mine out of a drawer last night. It hasn't been out of the case for a good 7 years and I'd forgotten what a neat little sequencer it is. I also own a Yamaha CS1x and never realized they were designed to be integrated with one another ( that's why there is a lip designed onto the chassis of the CS1x, to provide a resting spot for the QY10 ). It's like I have a whole new machine. Well, actually, I do :P
@@ReneeNme CS1x i bought it because it was blue, lightweight, sounded great and had spectacular arpeggio. some people said you couldnt save the arpeggio but i simply saved the patch itself already containing said arpeggio, done!
This was incredibly helpful!! I dug out my QY10 after many many years and cannot believe how I should have been using this. I really prefer using this to PC or Ipad. Great video!!

I wish I could have travelled into the future from 1990 to watch this :D - Im sure the QY10 was released 1990...as I used it to run MIDI into my PSS580. Later used it with a TG33 tone module.
Anybody wanting to bash this unit have no idea what they're talking about. The QY10 actually has a factory preset that allows a user to come damned close what Jon Lord's ( of Deep Purple fame ) gear setup sounded like.
Brilliant tutorial! What a powerful little machine this is! I am going to throw my 8 core PC off a cliff (not really) as QY10 is so much more fun to play around with! Just requires a tiny bit of patience to learn at first 😊.
Around 14:20 it appears that you can do chord inversions as he said if you have a chord with a bass note other than the root. I didn’t know it would be able to do that

Bought a QY10 back in '92. TBE I never got to grips with it. This video is brilliant - I didn't understand 90% of its features. Goes to show you must RTFM to get the most out of your gear. I still have the QY10 but sadly its internal battery is dead. Not sure if it's worth getting it fixed. QY10 is only worth about £40 on ebay now.
of course technology has continued to grow, yet midi is still around, hence the ageless quality of the portable music workstation Yamaha QY10. If I may, I'd like to add two more qualities to an already awesome list of wonders... 1) because of the Pulse Modulated samples, one can get NEW sounds from experimenting with the octave boundaries. 2) it has (omg) 16 channels of sound! true, method of accessing all of those is not obvious, nevertheless they are there for the curious musician...
Hello, is possible to create a chord progression loop with 4 or 8 bars playing everytime without stop? in the QY70 I could not see how to do...Thanks for your help.
To pre-program the chords into a loop it has to be in song mode, so you'd have to add the patterns and chords you want into the first 4 or 8 bars in song mode, and then just copy and paste the pattern 50 times or whatever you want it to be haha.
I’ve been trying to understand this thing’s instruction manual - headache material! Still can’t figure this device out… I just want to program a few notes [a little melody] that would play in a loop [I don’t even need a rythm section or backingTrack] but I haven’t managed even that… I should have purchased a Bliptronic 5000 instead, it’s way more intuitive and immediate, but I kept being told that “The Bliptronic 5000 is just a toy, get yourself a REAL sequencer!” - I regret my purchase. See, the thing about toys is, they’re fun! Unlike this thing.
Yes, the internal sounds are just the bonus the music equipment press was pushing for. I've been looking at one myself to go dawless. It originally had a case that makes it look like a vhs or beta tape.
@@MattGreerMusic When in Pattern mode press Record then use the cursor right button to scroll the end of that page. You should see Xms, where X represents the number of measures!
if your song is 8 measures or less, your song can be written as a pattern. and patterns of course, always repeat... another way is to use that 6000 note memory by simply copying the song multiple times to itself and making a note somewhere as to how long the song really is...

So I've been trying to record a pattern but I don't know why it doesn't let me do it on the fly, if I record a pattern I have to do it step by step.. does anybody know how to change this? so I can record it on the fly ?? hahah I mean... still can use it but its an extra pain. Thanks
When you have a new pattern you want to program, hit the record button and then hit menu and it'll show you an option for STP (step record) or OVR (Overdub) I believe. Then hit the overdub one and press play to begin the recording in real time.
I’ve been trying to figure out if it’s possible to sync 2 of these without one sending notes to the other. I have not figured out if anyone has ever tried it lol. Help
