Nice video! Definitely in the market for one of these for my 350. Only thing I might add is the travel of the dial indicator arm needs to be perfectly in line with the piston travel. *Appears* you had it slightly off. The spark plug hole adapter makes this easy, plus you don't need to remove the heads.

I added a vape to my 1977 RD400 and it really made the bike feel better. I think there might be some added flywheel effect as well since the vape flywheel diameter is so much greater and it really feels nice.. smooths the bike out a little and lends it a more stable idle. Ill be ordering the programmer soon and adding a timing curve this winter. I had another iggy on it before that had a curve and was amazed how much more power my bike made but it had the smallest lightest flywheel and I hated having such a high idle set to stop it from stalling at the lights. Vape will be the best of both worlds.

I have the Vape on my '77 RD400 and '75 RD350. Like you said, the bikes idle and feel better. More power, cleaner combustion, strong RPM pull throughout the rev range with no more flat spotting. Everything is better with Vape. For the everyday rider like myself, it was the smartest mod I've had done to my RDs.

@@bluoval3481 They really are wonderful for these older bikes with points ignitions. I added one to my rd400 few years back and was completely amazed how nice the bike felt. I assumed I wouldnt feel any difference since it just replaces the points ignition and I kept the timing spot on.. but I was wrong. The bike just feels so solid in a way.. like it pulls more smoothly or something. I cant really put my finger on it but I love the way it changed the characteristics of the bike.

I'm installing this on a 1972 R5. The only issue I am having is locating where to attach the black wire from the Relay that VAPE provides. I know it's suppose to go to ignition power, but identifying that wire on an R5 has proven difficult. I have looked at the wiring diagram for the R5, but it's not very clear. The closest color was a Red/Yellow, but I couldn't find it. If you don't mind me asking, where was this ignition power wire available to you, and what color was it?

I understand there is a US and a EU version of this Vape due to different wires. Is that so? How to recognize which version I have? Besides, why don’t you screw in the comparator in the spark plug holes instead of dismounting the cyl. heads.

@rechargegarage8705 Месяц назад
@@garyhoward4064 Hey Gary, I don’t believe there is US or EU versions as it is a stand alone ignition and charge system, you only need to connect ignition power to the relay so you can shut it off/on, the system comes with a new rec/reg so doesn’t use any of your old wiring on the ignition or charging side. The engine was rebuilt and not fitted into the bike yet so the head was off anyway that’s why I did it like that, my other video I did it with the head on to a 350 engine which was later replaced with this 400 engine. Cheers hope this helps.

Thanks for video Recharge. I have Installed vape system on my 75 RD 350 and It works well . A little difficult lining up timing as flywhheel magnets want to pull when putting on. I agree having a slotted backing plate would be a good Idea. I was also at a loss for a while finding correct wire for ignition book said red/white wire and my bike had red/black wire think it was Ignition to existing coils. It is also optional to get keyed flywheel exstra $100? I did not get it and I have not had problem with slipping but I did get heavy bolt and washer option.

@rechargegarage8705 Год назад
Thanks Johnny, I didn’t know that you could get a keyed flywheel option or the heavier bolt, I just ordered mine direct from Vape ignition I will check out there web site again for these options, cheers.

You seem to have the long snout crankshaft, which means yours came originally with cdi, I also have the same crank (rd400g). And I want to get the vape ignition, there seems to be two versions of the cranks, a long snout and a shorter one, which reference did you get? Regards
@rechargegarage8705
@rechargegarage8705 5 месяцев назад
Hey mate, yes mine is a long crank and I didn’t have any ignition system for it so that’s why I went for the vape ignition system and it works great, if you get on the Vape Ignition web site and search it there’s one for the long crank. There’s a measurement in the instructions. The one I ordered was part number-711379900. When I ordered it I put the length of the crank end in the comments so they could send the correct one out. Cheers and good luck mate.

@@rechargegarage8705 yes I just did the measurements, and its the exact crank as yours..... so yeah....yours is a 2r9 crankshaft, which are said to be the strongest ones. and were fitted on the uk rd400e, and Canadian/Australian/south American rd400f, and rd400g. 1979-1980 models. i just placed an order for one... mine will have to travel to Colombia, how long did it take yours to get from Vape to the UK. this is my bike ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0WLtrLkCAzg.html with Daytona livery.

Hi, i got the same part as you did, but i have a doubt, the manual says to set the ignition at 2.3 to 3mm BTDC , but you set it at 2mm BTDC, and 1 degree over the pickup. i know the original manual for my 400 says that it should be 2mm BTDC. which instructions did you follow?
@rechargegarage8705
@rechargegarage8705 5 месяцев назад
Hey mate, pretty sure I used the instructions they gave me that came with the stator but I will have to check maybe I set mine wrong 🧐, I would use the vape instructions not the original manual.

Hi there It was about $650 Australian for the whole kit with coil, and Rec/reg by memory. Good thing though no need to worry about the battery going bad and being stuck. Just trying to get that engine in the bike now so stay tuned. 👍

Im not sure i like the lack of Woodruff key for the flywheel, a movable backplate or pickup for the timing would be better and it should be checked dynamically for accuracy as this is not an accurate enough method for me especially for a performance two stroke.
@rechargegarage8705
@rechargegarage8705 Год назад
I agree Mark I don’t know why they don’t have a keyed flywheel to standard specs I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard for them to do for the money you pay for there system.
@Mark5mith
@Mark5mith Год назад
@@rechargegarage8705 it doesn't seem logical, my main worry is that the flywheel can move relative to the crank, especially when tightening the flywheel nut, and adjustment will be a mare.
