how can you tell if you just need to tighten up the chain tension or the bearings are bad?

I would recommend opening a chain case for visual inspection every 2000 miles or so and replace the right and left front axle bearings every 2000 miles regardless. Thats a good time to try and wiggle the upper shaft by hand with the cover off. Yearly you should check chain tension and change gear oil. Also look underneath at the axle seals for anything odd looking. I have seen 2 complete bearing failures where the parts of the bearing blew out the side and ruined other components in the process. 1 was at 2000 miles and the other was at 4000 miles.

Right hand thread on both gear bolts?

If I recall correctly they are both right hand thread.

I’ve just bought the exact same sled. Is there an oil seal behind the lower gear?

Yes there is and several other components. You can check out the parts schematic here www.yamahasportsplaza.com/oemparts/a/yam/5003c052f8700212fc84122e/track-drive-2 Your best bet is to purchase the whole bearing and seal kit and do both sides at once since they often get water in them and fail at an inconvenient time amzn.to/3ZP8xsS Also this service manual may be helpful snowparts.ru/manuals/RX-1service-manual.pdf Also remember it only takes around 8oz of oil in chain case.
