I finally got my 1983 "Special" Yamaha RX-50 running perfectly! After fixing the carburetor float, and drilling the main jet out to a # 120, this thing hauls ass for a 50cc!! I got this thing up to its new top speed record of 51mph, and it impressively made it up some massively steep hills! I hope you guys enjoy the video! Stay tuned for the next one, I will be starting up the TS185 for the first time after completely rebuilding it!

My dad has the same motorcycle. He used to ride it when driving us to church, all 6 members of our family will fit in that motorcycle (4 kids, plus 2 parents). I found the motorcycle in the stockroom of our old house. I have plans in restoring it, for sentimental reasons. Thanks for this vid, now I can be assured that dad's motorcycle is not totally forgotten.

i am working on a factory condition ..1982 RX 50 that was made in 81 .. it dose 65 and still climbing but i don't want to push it is has 7,300 miles on it . ...rides great ..! this one is a sky blue color . all stock its been in a barn for 15 years. electric start, my daughter just got her permit and crashed it yesterday , but it still runs , did some damage but finding the parts is going to be fun ..i just rode it about 5 miles on a dirt road ...lol fun bike , but going from a stage 4 1200 sportster to this tiny 50 cc is nuts . fun ! lol i am 60 and been ridding for 50 years ...i build and restore bike fir the last 17 years ... you never find them in this good of condition ...

I fully understand what your saying about speed on a small bike , I have had bikes from 50cc up to 1200cc but by far the best fun Ive ever had is getting a 50 or 100cc bike to go as fast as it can , anything over that say 150cc and over your dicing with death and that certainly takes the fun out !

You should get a set of jet reamers, drills leave spiral burrs in the jet, reamer make a smooth hole that flows better. If I was your size [I am 6'5" and 350lbs] I would Cafe it out! Good work so far.

Hey bud there’s s really good video on RU-vid I watched and trust me it’s worth it. I bought the kit. It’s wideband gauge kit. You get the gauge And the oxygen sensor. I bought the adapter that you slipnin the end of the pipe instead of welding bungs on the pipe. Then you can ride the bike with gauge temporary mounted and watch your numbers at low speed. Then hi speed. Then adjust each jet to get your 14.0. Ish numbers. No guessing. You get it spot on. I’m just now trying it on my wr400!!!

I bought two Honda MB5's back in 1981. They would go 62 mph stock at about 10,000rpm's. I increased the countershaft sprocket sprocket by one tooth and they cruised at 55mph! 62 was still the top speed just at a lower rpm.

Good job. That little bike sounds sweet. Just a thought. I have a little pw80 for my kid and it was always running way to rich. After messing with the carbs and jets I did and oil injector delete and just run premix in the tank. It really woke the little bike up. I would give that a try to see if you can get more hp out of it but that will make the bike less “original”

Mine ran perfect with low mileage. All stock and medium sized guy on the flat. Always 46 on the speedo. Fun bike. Couple gripes : rear suspension way too soft, back breaker if you hit bump at speed Gripe 2: Shift from 1st to 2nd, you had to let rpm drop and this made it hard to get rpm back up on hills. No torque

put a sproket wit one tooth less. The motorcycle will run a little faster but it will feel a bit heavy at low speeds. Check the spark plug to see how the fuel burns is important on the 2t motorcycles.

@kizza40897 It is important to check the spark plug to see if it has carbon or oil residues that indicates how it is burning the fuel. Ideally, the spark plug will look almost clean with cream colored residues on the white inside. If the spark plug looks perfectly clean it could mean a bad mixture of fuel and break the engine

The only real accurate way to read a plug is when it's brand new unless it's really wet

@kizza40897 you need to do a plug check to make sure the colour is like a rich tea biscuit ie: darker, not lighter light means weak and likely to seize up or pinch, you do a plug check by riding up a slight incline in 3 rd at about 20-25 mph and just turn off the engine DO NOT just slow down that gives you a false reading as you are really only checking it at tick over just look online for how to do it if not sure I have done it this way for years when racing Lambretta scooters and Kawasaki 400s there is art to carb tuning

adjusting the needle does work, only you will not feel any power difference. its only for a right mixture, thats very important.

ive pulled a wire strand out of wire bush with pliers and use that to clean jets before ... but I wouldn't drill them to make it bigger ...no going back if you make it too big

NIce work @Goldguy! You may know this but I'll try and put this simple on jet tuning. Jets are with throttle position Wide open= main, needle 1/4 to 3/4, and pilot idle to 1/4 . Each jets will bleed over to the next. Start with main like you did, but increase till a slight stumble at WOT then lower the needle. Pilots usually will need to be increased in size since you just induced a leaner needle. You can check the plug at each range, but I usually go by feel of the pants. Top speed can be increased with a sprocket size change usually 1 tooth in the front or 2 to 3 in the rear. Putting out great content looking forward to you next video.

Ideally you'd put a just large enough to where it four strokes then go down until it stops. After that do a plug chop. Jetting with 2 strokes is pretty important...

This and the Ysr50 share the same motor This means you could do a 80cc big bore kit Do a expansion pipe as well That would probally get you to 65-70

Now you need a 10t front sprocket and bigger carb. I put a 120cc carb and 10t sprocket on mine haul a holes my guy.

Wow, that bike seems to run super nice! My DT50 with the same engine only does about 40mph (65kmh), even though it's modified to have more power... And yours seems to run really smooth as well, mine shakes to bits when approaching top speed... Ok just a slight edit, it doesn't actually seem to be the exact same type of engine, you said yours has a 6-speed transmission, but mine only has 4...

ok just some info from the UK where we had both models the DT was geared as a dirt bike so only needed 4 gears but I put a smaller rear sprocket on and it pulled away a tad slower but gained 15 mph up to 45 from the standard 30 mph over in the UK a friend had the rs50 which only had 5 speed and once the carb was unrestricted and gained a k & N air filter had a top speed of 52 mph at approx 9,000 revs according to our local police speed camera he had bragging rights ti I got a Suzuki A50 that managed 55mph.

Change the back sprocket. I changed mine to one off a Yamaha GT 80. I believe I used the original chain. Of course it was almost new at the time. Upped top speed to 60 when it was less than a year old.

On the back of the reed block rubber was there a piece of rubber that sticks out? yamaha reed blocks often have this it blocks part of the reed valve cut it off if there is one so that the back of the rubber is completely flat where it meets the reed block itll give it more power another thing you could do is widen the reed restraining plates to about 10mm a the tip

You do know that you can buy various sizes of main jets, cheaper nylon main jets for experimenting an brass main jets once the ideal size has been discovered. The old school rule of thumb for fitting K&N / S&B / pod filters is +10 oversize versus the OEM main jet.

Hey gold guy I also have a rx50 special but I have the black version. So the pin tip in the carburator the reason it leaks? I'm asking because sometimes the one I have leaks so I have to lower the petcock gas lever to half or close it completely.

My preferred app is just called speedometer. It's the one with 69 in the thumbnail. It keeps track of distance and top speed

some of us EU boys are restricted to 30... km/h... all because my country started out with motorised bicycles and petrolheads doing 50 km/h on rim brakes (or tirebrakes) and non-reinforced bicycle frames. I'm from denmark btw.

@@Alex-up6vd it's different laws and crackdown-level dependent on country. In Denmark mopeds go on the bicycle lanes, and as such going 80 km/h is pretty insane, and dangerous.
