Yamaha STAGEPAS 1K mkII - Pre-release Thoughts On This Upgrade

Long story short I think the STAGEPAS 1K mkII is what the mkI version should have been. There just isn't much that has been changed but for some reason the output is significantly better without swapping out speaker components. I am confused and I'm going to have to buy one when they are available to figure out if there truly is much of a difference.

The EQ on the mains alone is totally work the new iteration, IMHO. But that's a great question about having the EQ included in a firmware upgrade (or simply having that compatibility in the app).

I got my mk2 two days ago and I DO NOT DJ. I am a singer \songwriter and I have a Bose S1pro and I have owned Bose Column arrays in the past . This MK 2 from Yamaha is truly an exceptional answer for someone like me playing smaller to medium sized gigs , its clear has plenty of Bass for acoustic music even with a cajon and acoustic bass if needed . I am most impressed with the control in the app and on the mixer on the speaker as well.

Still happy with it? Did you get one, or two for stereo? Do you think it could support a trio with guitar/vocals/bass guitar/bass drum performing in a room of 100 people?

Lots of companies advertise their power without the limiter in the circuit. My guess is the new amp design allows more output before distortion letting them push the system further before the limited turns on. That could give you a boost in db without a major change to the peak power rating. It's really hard to say now that spec sheets rarely give us speaker sensitivity to do our own calculations.
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 2 года назад
I can't imagine there is a huge variance in the wattage a 1.5" driver can handle but I do think you're onto something. It might be all about the calculations... Say they were able to put another 1/4 watt into a single 1.5" driver and get another dB of output out of it. Without hurting my brain thinking too much perhaps the magic of driver coupling would multiply that 1 dB per driver to 6 dB total?? So perhaps you don't need as much extra out of each driver to have it accumulate to the 6 dB gain since it's an array? Then again perhaps I'm thinking too much about this. lol
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 2 года назад
Oh wait maybe not. I just did a little coupling math and that thought wouldn't quite work out.

Hi I happen to land on your channel, reviewing the mic mechanic 2 pedal, and now subscribed I see your here reviewing the yamaha stagepas 1k, just like you I bought it and honestly they do have a fairly good sound, ideal for oneman and guitar and vocals, but blasting keyboards through them and disco, forget it, at venues I kept having to lift them up on beer crates to get the sound above people's heads and they kept going into red, so I was happy I sold them on to a musician just playing acoustic and singing and mouth organ, and he's very happy with them and sounds excellent through the 1k, but definately not for me, they are definitely not for bands unless you play nice and quite in a corner of a lounge bar, your completely right in all you say about companies marketing their products, is there really that much of a difference in sound quality on the mark 2, I doubt it, same sub same little tiny drivers, not for me, but yes I'm happy I found an angry tech guy here, you tell the whole truth and nothing but, so their is one product I would love to view your truth on hopefully you will do it sometime soon, that's on the presonus Ar16c mixing desk, which I returned, found it super for recording to SD on the fly, but I returned it to shop, due to it driving me demented in a live situation, or would you even touch on presonus end of, but going back to Yamaha stagepas would I buy it again, no definately not, love your videos and will check out more...

I have been using the StagePas 1k since it's inception a few years ago. I don't see any sizeable difference between the StagePas 1K and the StagePas 1K MKII. I see where they say that the amp is improved, but 100 more watts is not that big of a change. The parametric EQ within the app is the biggest sizeable difference that I can see and as said in this video, that could have just been done via a firmware update unless there is something physically on the circuit board that has changed.

It might be a marketing bluff... on the other hand, there is the redistribution of power, it is now LF=500W + HF=600W and user manual says that the array can not be interchanged between MKI and MKII because changes in the HF drivers. I would like to se a real comparison between the two. I own a recently purchased MKII and am happy with it at least for know, don't have the means to measure the output though.
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 11 месяцев назад
I have two of the MKI's and two of the MKII's now. There is a noticable difference. Not just in output but sound quality. I think they did a retuning job on the system or maybe different drivers in the top make it sound smoother. But the MKII is a much better speaker. I still keep my MKI's for rental but I don't personally use them anymore.

How are you feeling about it now that you've had it longer? Do you have 1 or 2 for stereo pair? How do you use it? I'm mostly interested in it for live sound reinforcement as a solo artist who occasionally would perform with a trio: guitar/bass/drums (mic the bass drum) and vocals.

Very simple, it's a marketing strategy by Yamaha, because the sales have dropped on the 1k system , oh look we have now made the 1k system sound much better, say hello to our Mark 2, we want your hard earned money, reel you in, but not so fast when you have an angry tech guy at our backs 😉

Hey Brian. I'm still looking for a column array for my smaller gigs up to 100 people. Do you think it's better to go with an array, or a 12 in two top? I currently have the Yamaha DZR 15, DXS18 XLF combo, but ever event doesn't need that. I have the EV ZLX 12 but they limit very fast. I mostly use them for ceremonies now. I was thinking about getting a line array, but sometimes I do big events. Sometimes up to 400 people. I think using a DZR 12/DXR 12 would work for the smaller events and double up as sound reinforcement for my bigger events. Thoughts?

I'm curious about these Yamahas and would use them for 100 people or less. Aesthetically they're great, especially for swankier weddings and high-end corporate events, sponsorships, galas, fashion shows. That said, I don't think the other brand's columns cut it for 150+ people. Not for a dance party. The 12" sub on these can probably accommodate 150 people, but even for small events, I like to have the ability to thump. These Mk2s have good spread and excellent aesthetic, but they're probably not powerful enough for dance music and hip-hop. For years, I've used a 15" RCF sub and 2x Yamaha DXR 12s for receptions of 150-350 people. Sounds right up your alley. Get a Rock n Roller cart for transport and you're good. The RCF is less than 65 pounds. Mine has never left it's road case, so it's in near mint condition still. The 15" sub is perfect imho too - nice and tight like a 12" sub and not as woofy as an 18". And also not 90+ pounds. I've tried 2x 10" speakers with the sub and those don't work well. I think the magic is in the 15" sub and 2x 12" tops. I love Yamaha and will fight a QSC lover. Those sound like trash. I returned the k2 series 12s

@@DancinShoesDJ I did pick up the Stagepas 1K MK2. I use them for cocktail and smaller events. They do get loud, but if you try and get a thump out of them they limit rather quickly. I use my 15s and 18s for the major events. I'm considering the bass boss 21 or their 18. I'm happy with my tops, not so much with the DXS 18 XLF.

I was hoping they’d include 48v phantom power on mic channels for use with condenser mics such as the DPA 4099 which lots of pro violinists, saxophonists, guitarists etc use. Anyone know of compact column PA that has phantom power on mic channels like my trusty old Stagepas 600 traditional portable PA?

I am like you ,feeling mislead.also what are the two screw fittings for on the back of the speaker housing
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 2 года назад
I'm wondering if when they initially designed this speaker if they didn't intend on having a wall bracket accessory for permanent installation. I know JBL does this for the PRX One. Perhaps they decided against manufacturing the accessory bracket after the design was finalized? This is of course pure speculation as to what those screw fittings are for but I can't think of any other reason they would be there.

WTF Yamaha???? Now I'm 150% convinced that I made the right decision to go with a pair of the more compact, lightweight, better looking and feature rich EV Evolve 30Ms! I was so hoping that Yamaha would have added at least one more mic input, XLR combo line inputs, more fx and dynamics, hardware 3 band eq, larger hi/mid drivers and more of them. I could go on.

Sorry the first comment has nothing to do with your video but I wanted to catch you while this post was fresh. What makes the Xlf Yamaha subs better than the DXS band pass style subs? Can't wait to hear your take of the stage pass MK2.
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 2 года назад
The XLF versions are a bass reflex design which some say is a little more musical than a bandpass design. But beyond that it's my understanding that NEXO was heavily involved in the designing of the DZR tops and XLF subs. So they are about as close as you can get to tour grade without buying NEXO speakers. Bandpass is designed to get loud but they typically don't hit as low. It's a trade off... So you can get more bang for the buck with a bandpass style subwoofer if you're going for loud bass. If you're buying for yourself I'd go with the XLF models. I had 4 of the 18's and they were the best subs I've ever owned. If you're buying for rental inventory I'd get the standard DXS.

@TheAngrySoundTech 2 года назад
I'm not a huge fan of a ducker. If you're playing music and go to talk on the mic it automatically lowers the volume of the music so your voice is more prominent. But sometimes you can get a music volume pumping effect as the volume goes up and down as a person talks.

Hey, enjoyed your vid. I ended up buying one of these basically because I’m visually impaired and cannot make use of a digital screen mixer, but need an analog mixer. The guy atSweetWater told me that I could not have full control of the EV 30m with an external mixer, which was the thought I went in with. Anyway, I have not tested the specs of the system at an event yet. I was wondering if you will follow through with buying one and making a comparison vid. Very interested in this.
