This is just such a fantastic review. Haven't seen any adventure bike reviews covering these kind of off road circumstances. Had one of the first Yamaha Ténéré 600's in the nineties. Eventually put some motocross tires on it. Rode them in the dirt and on the road. Such a great bike. The Ténéré 700 is so much more capable of handling the dirt stuff. This would be the ideal bike to keep with my Harley.

With the Tenere 660, Yamaha had a great bike on their hands for years, they use their racing experience and bring it to the bike builds, the MT-07 donor engine and clean sheet build is a winner. It just needs the suspension internals specced up for hard off-road use.

One of the best example of the "if it looks good, it is good" philosophy! I love the retro Dakar twin look and I keep hearing great things about them overall. Great street legs, comfort and manners with decent off road ability...although obviously not an extreme enduro mount!

Sadly, I think the price varies a lot depending on the market. It’s within about 1000$ of the 790 here in Canada. Still a good bike, and here in Canada, dealerships are already sitting on unsold stock from what I can see. I’ll likely buy a leftover.

The Honda will be : - Heavier - More electronics - More expensive - In a weird place between KTM790/ Yam T700 and the BMWs If the 790 did not have so many little problems reported and a clearly bad design at the right footpeg => cracked engine (and before the fanboys jump on me, the problem is documented and aftermarket part exists to minimise the weak point) I would buy it. Now for the price of the KTM I can seriously outfit my future T700 with top suspension, Ecu mapping, aftermarket exhaust line, power commander, self JumpStart lithium battery, crashbars, proper tires etc... You get the jizz. The Yam is still new but the engine is so reliable. You do not hear as much problems as KTM owners from the forum. I know a couple of French motorcycle journalist and mechanics who drove cape north to Angola (stopped by covid19) on stock t700 for fundraising. They were super impressed and never questioned the reliability. Only broken stuff were due to falls . I have a 2004 450 wrf in Senegal still going strong!!!never had any issues engine wise. If you want a reliable engine off road, go Yamaha. They are the Toyota equivalent for reliability in hard terrain\conditions

Having said that I know this bike is going to be better for a RTW trip (easier to fix in the middle of nowhere). Does not need to become a money Pit just a couple of bits to take it in the direction you want,I should have a larger fuel tank in about a month . @@michaeljkasnter Yes it's sad when I know more about the Products than the sales Men do .. I have a 3 year old Yamaha FZ-07 and he was trying to get me to trade it in on a New MT-07. I went back the next day because I have been waiting over 3 weeks for a Speedometer now .. They don't contact me when the part is in .. If I call them I just get put on hold for 20 minutes then hung up on.. The people in parts have very low Morale and all of the good ones who had been there for a few years.. meaning they worked for the Previous Owners Husband and Wife who started the Business in 1968 .. have all quit. So the next Day I said you must think Yamaha's are Junk if I should trade in every three years.. Then I aked him how mich he would give me on a Trade in for a bike with 0 miles on the Speedometer? Anyway I ahd told him I had hit a Deer.. I guess he thought I should trade in the bent up bike on a new one and not because I have 8,500 miles on it which I never told him how many miles I had on the bike .. I showed him photos of the bike and the Deer after I hit the deer and I also had a photo of my odomter at 4,444 miles..

@Dante_S550_Turbo
@Dante_S550_Turbo 4 года назад
790 is a more capable bike, but you are paying for that extra capability for $3k+. The T7 will undoubtedly be more reliable in the long run, and Yamaha parts are more readily available for much cheaper prices if you have something fail. Where the T7 falls flat is the suspension, great for on road, terrible in offroad. Yes it's soft and helps with offroad traction, but it's suspension travel is one of the shortest and the sag for most ppl without gear already eats up over 30% of that travel. It bottoms out easily even for a 200lb rider and it is not a cheap fix either. :/ That all being said over all I've moved from wanting a 690/790 to a T7. Despite it's downfalls i've been trying to research the best and cheapest way to tackle the suspension issues. I'm still hoping for an all more capable 490 adventure R to come out, and i've just learned about a possible honda africa twin 800 coming as well. So far my trigger finger is still on the T7 for now.

So for adventure bikers who like to trail often, these new mid-range bikes will steal market share from the big GS’s and liter adventure bikes. For those who primarily road their adventure bikes but also want tractability off-road, one wonders if these bikes will begin to win over that market as well. As we seeing the end of the popularity of the big 1200’s?

I am sure you can play around with the suspension and dial out any major issues. First try going a few clicks stiffer, compression and Pre-load, if its better, try a few more, worse and go the other way. Also, body position and throttle/rpm also makes a difference, so try a few different methods and see what works best.... Let me know how you get on? Good luck! Ride free, JR

Does it handle good (leaning a bit here and there), like the normal road bike on the roads with those knobby tyres??

I'm a little bigger than you. 210 lbs with no gear. Would you get stiffer springs and/or preload in the front right away?

Not one single review of the T7 has a pillion on it. Real life motorcycling sometimes includes a pasanger. Love the T7 but haven't been able to see one review.

I have a T7. Had it since September here in the UK, and while I love riding it, I don’t like looking at it and as a photographer that’s important to me. I’m leaning heavily towards a Scrambler Desert Sled. Good move or massive down step? On paper they are so so similar.

Wil Collins hi, having the same debate, just can’t get excited by the looks of the T7, sure it’s a great bike but the Sled just looks mega to me! Both run the same tyre! Probably an age thing. Too many great bikes to choose from, cheers, ps. Looking to retire to Cromer so looks some great byways Thetford way!

Nozzer 66 ye. Thetford is awesome for trails. You’ll enjoy it, as long as you can get along with Sand.

I don't see it when I'm riding and I don't see my reflection in shop windows but that's just me we're all different scrambler is a road bike more than dirt the Yamaha is opposite

I have a Desert Sled. After tweaking the suspension, it's just great in the twisties. Lots of feel from the front end and nicely made as well.

No, not in my opinion. I think you should gain more experience before riding the T7. A great beginner bike is this machine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_tS4LHpY6cU.html

MotoGeo You’re right Jamie, I have been eyeing that RE too, its a love and hate relationship I have with the look of the bike! Lol. I’ve also been looking that the Honda CB500x Rally Raid Edition, thoughts? Appreciate the feedback.

Versys x 300 would be better for a beginner, or maybe a dual sport 250 if you ride more off-road than on road

I have just bought one and it's very disappointing to ride off road. Too top heavy and rear suspensions terrible at speeds over 15mph. Try before you buy ... I didn't and wish I had
