Thanks for your videos which I always enjoy. Sometimes I think I'll be into some kind of cold! I have a picture of cannon ball actually with the cardboard read holder and a couple of reeds in it ! And heard that Charlie Parker who is known to repair broken keys with spoons? Also I think that Simon could play on a chair leg and make it sound good! God bless. Bill UK

Would have been nice to hear these compared to the G1 that the horn came with (at least mine did)....

Hey this is great info guys thanks! I have a Yamaha YTS62ii Tenor for about a decade now. It shipped with a G1 custom neck on it, and from Simon’s descriptions of the necks and your description about where the G1 sits in the range, I think I’m better off staying with what I have; I was considering a V1, but I think I should just stick with the G1, so I appreciate the heads up. I do notice the challenges Simon noted about the V1 with the G1 unless a practice alot, which is not always possible. I could consider a C1 or even an E1 maybe, but I don’t feel that I’ll be happy with the expressibility.

A sax must do what I want. Not what sax wants. That's why there are mpc, ligature and read. And different kinds or different music genres. Cheers Sam.

Thanks very much for the review. Where does the 62 neck that came with my 62iii fit in relation to these custom necks?

Hi - Yamaha don't release the spec info on their standard neck for the 62 but our testing would put it between the E1 and C1 generally.

Hi, I have a 62ii with a G1 neck. How would the E1 neck compare to my G1 neck? Thanks Drew

It's difficult to say for sure because Yamaha don't disclose the G1 design information. We could find out by cutting one in half and measuring at all the relevant points but that seems a bit extreme! From our testing in-store and with multiple players opinion we'd say the G1 is between the E1 and V1. i.e It's fairly large but not as big as the V1. Interestingly Yamaha got some kickback on that G1 neck with people complaining it played the 62 out of tune - this is not true, it's simply that it's fairly open and as such the player needs to be mindful of that and what it does to intonation generally. As we mention the larger and more open the neck the wider the intonation 'landing zone' and so it's down to the player to control that with experience.

So it sounds like for me I’m better off sticking with the G1 as opposed to going back to an E1? Cheers Drew

As long as you're happy with it :) Only the V1 would give more breadth. The C1 would feel much more compact and centred. The E1 would feel pretty similar.

When you say you have to put more air through the V1 are you saying it has more back pressure causing the need for more air?
@dawkesmusic
@dawkesmusic 4 года назад
Not really. It's simply a larger bore thus there is more area to fill and thus requires more air to fill it.

What mouthpiece and reed are you using please. This equipment thing is so subjective, but a lot of fun. Thankyou!

V1 neck produces very distinctive sound indeed. What tenor saxophone was used for the test?
@dawkesmusic

It is a YTS-875EX Custom Yamaha - Simon's horn.

sorry I don't like the v1 with this comparison. I have the M1 and I'll just stick with it unless I could play them all and change my mind

I have a Yamaha 61 about 40 years old. Does anyone know if the vi would fit it or would it need some alterations

Hi - A colleague here at Dawkes uses a YTS-61 with a C1 neck and it works great so should be ok.
