Here are some non default sounds to give you an idea of what the TG77 sounds like. Slight reverb added.

I love my TG77, especially when routing it through my DP4. :)

Hmmm, I'm glad to see in the comments that there are a lot of TG 77 enthusiasts out there. i had become perhaps as much an expert as anyone on "FM" synthesis, especially as i had come up with a similar idea for synthesis in 1968- playing around with modulation of one oscillator to drive another.... phase & freq modulation,. and have written over 10,000 patches for DX7 II many of which i adapted for TG 77 (before the backup battery died). These patches HERE are mostly what I hate (sorry) about what has happened to the world of electronic music. They all have that evolving "world Music' meets grade 'B' horror film aesthetic, that i find not only UNimaginative, but also so specific that they have the potential for use in exactly one project. My problem with most presets on most synths is they are not very useful. It's nice to have 2-3 DIFFERENT sounding piano, organ B-3, guitar strings, brass, woodwinds , bass etc as well as some classic synth sounds , like some sawtooth based , strings, plucks, and brass sounds, and classic moog sawtooth pads. The weakness of the TG or DX fM (yamaha) synths are that they are not easy to tweek, in terms of even attack decay envelopes, let alone basic tonality of waveforms. Good to hear about all the patches on Midi Quest 12, i think i bought a cop a while back, and what with v arious equipment failures, haven't gotten around to installing any new software. Thanks for sharing even though i don't like most of the sounds.

Thanks for sharing your views! I think the reason the sounds went the direction they did is for film and media. That's where the money was for sound designers anyway i beleive. I do electronic music and music for experimental film and am always on the hunt for the evolving pads and ethereal/sci fi stuff. Its the main reason i bought the TG77, several of the bands i respected when i was younger used it on a few albums. The midi quest patches opened up a whole world for it though, plenty of patches there for everyone to benefit from :)

How the hell does this synth sound so analog, its incredible
@xfloodcasual8124
@xfloodcasual8124 2 года назад
Because it has a big analog output board. Yamaha still does this today

Put a Roland JD990 aside, and you'll find the TG sounding very digital !!

Disable the internal effects and run the dry sounds through some quality outboard and the analog feel comes alive. I have 2 of these and love 'em.

Could you suggest a good set of hands-on pedals that would do justice to the TG, in terms of reverb, delay, and a symphonic-style chorus??

Great video, thank you! But i worry about how bright your replacement LED is. I think whoever installed it forgot to install the resistor that brings the backlight voltage down from 5v to 3.3v. If you still have this tg77, i recommend you get someone who can do the job to put that resistor in place, it'll greatly increase the lifespan of that LED screen.

It does have a cloudy look to it, i bet you're right it was not installed right. I do have a friend that could look at it, i'll see if he has some time in the near future, thanks for your input!

Hopefully you’re still responding to comments. What’s the best way to obtain midi quest 12? Looks like it’s an old, windows only program with no real way to purchase? Thanks a lot man!

its squest.com for the website, i think it changed recently, but they've been around since the early 1990's, super solid program and worth every penny.

The tg 77 is verrry easy to program from the front panel , assuming the display is still working ..or get a new display

SY Manager from the FM Alive site works great and it's only $25, and regularly updated.

@@spacehamham Glad to help. The Ctrlr editing app also has a panel for the SY, and it's free, but I don't know how well it works. SY Manager is great though. Makes loading, and editing sounds a snap.

How much trouble is it to change the display out? Got any part numbers?
@vocoded5290
@vocoded5290 4 года назад
I didnt change this display, but i've seen a video of it done and it looks hard to do unless you have knowledge of electronics repair. It requires careful hands and good soldering skills.

Hi, I'm interested in one, but are these sounds already pre installed pre sets, or do I need to make sure the seller includes a specific floppy disc or cd etc.. thanks
@vocoded5290
@vocoded5290 4 года назад
Yes it has several banks of sounds included. If the memory battery is dead, you can install a new battery and re-initialize the unit back to factory presets without a disc or other device hooked up. they are in the ROM memory. The sounds you hear in my video are NOT the sounds included in the SY or TG77. These are sounds i've collected or made.

@@vocoded5290 Thanks for the clarification & did you customize all of these sounds yourself? These in particular sound amazing! Especially like the "BirdSound" bell one, is there a name to this specific set I could purchase?

@@gianaccetta8571 most of these sounds I downloaded Within MIDI Quest 12 software. It is a synthesizer Sound Bank editor that includes an online library for most modern synthesizers with a memory. You can import thousands of sounds via system exclusive data

OMG, I just spent 3 hours building patches with Kodamo Essence FM and 2:40 sounds almost exactly the same... I just can't help but wonder how much menu diving it took to get there with TG(SY)77?

Using programs like Midi Quest gives you a graphic user interface to program many of the older synths from the 80s and 90s 👍
