Yamaha THR10 - Philip Sayce vintage pedals demo

Blues supremo Philip Sayce puts his THR10 through its paces with a series of vintage pedals.
While most modelling amps struggle to work well with effects in the front end, thanks to Yamaha's VCM component modelling, THR responds exactly like you'd expect a tube amp to, even with Philip's 'best of the best' effects in the front end...
The video was recorded at Mates Rehearsal Studios in Hollywood, with the THR mic'd into the PA system - what you hear is an accurate representation of the sound in the room.
Philip Sayce's new album, Influence, is available exclusively in Europe and the UK from August 25th (global release coming soon!).

I met Phillip Sayce when he was playing with Jeff Healey band at The Hampton Beach Casino in the mid 90's, putting him him @ 20-21 years old. To say he ripped it up on stage is the ultimate understatement. But my greatest memory was chatting post-show just outside the band bus with Joe, Tom, Phillip, and, eventually Jeff. In the middle of a conversation with Phillip, he got distracted by some excited fan's exuberant adulation and yelled back a gracious reply, only to turn back to me and apologize for the interruption in our conversation. Well he already had me with his guitar skills but to discover how gracious he was as a person has stayed with me ever since. He was extremely humble and thankful that we had come to see the show. His guitar playing spoke for itself. But it was his classiness and affability that were the memories I took home that night!!

+martind56 I met Philip a couple of times after Gigs in 2010 and again in 2012 - he and the band stayed back to meet anyone who wanted to/ sign merch. etc. he remains humble/gracious and both times thanked the audience for turning out.

Philip is an absolute monster. Canada happily sends out into the wild the best hockey players and guitar players. That's because our long winters give both groups of kids A LOT of practice time! :-) Phil was born in Wales but came to Canada when he was two years old to open for Jimi Hendrix. He srnt his gig money to his parents so they could come join him in Toronto.

I recently got one of these, and haven't used it that much. I haven't been so thrilled. But then I just paused this video where it showed his settings. I set mine up that way. Lead channel with gain a bit less than half, and master all the way. Bass and treble in the middle with mid boosted slightly. A touch of spring reverb. And what do you know -- it sounds exactly like this video, without the pedals. Great sound! I think sometimes on amps with a lot of choices, I get too wound up in trying out all the channels and get overwhelmed by them. It's awesome to see how a phenomenal player like Philip Sayce sets this thing. I haven't tried pedals with it yet. I was hoping that I wouldn't need pedals with it. The onboard modulation and delay are pretty decent. But there's no onboard substitute for the overdrive, boost, distortion, fuzz, etc., in my opinion. I'm not that crazy about the high gain channels, at least not yet.
@marrzipan
@marrzipan 2 года назад
I know this comment comes four years late, but I did the EXACT same thing as you, paused video to check his amp settings, copied them and was blown away with the knowledge that you can have an awesome clean tone even in the lead channel! Now I love this amp even more! I recently purchased a THR30II and was bitterly disappointed by the inferior clean sound of that amp. There's nothing left of that classic THR clean tube tone on the newer version, which is such a shame. :(

@Doug J. What are using to overdrive the 10C?
@Doug5524
@Doug5524 8 лет назад
It has it's own spring ,echo ,hall,chorus ect reverb built it and you can add different sounds through you computer or Iphone oh yes and it is stereo you can use pedals I use lovepedal E6 eternity overdrive , a Flashback TC Electronic,and to night I am using my new Neunaber Immerse Reverberator Pedal that I received yesterday (Monday)and very happy:-) other pedals Dark matter , A mojomojo I use with Marshall DSL 5C , a Fender Blues Junior, I do love to experiment ,if there is anything else you would like to know just ask and best of Luck with your choice Marshall has just brought out a new amp check out Rob Chapman on RU-vid PS. it takes headphone the THR10C if you are in to metal then you need the THR10X
@TheJeffcurran
@TheJeffcurran 8 лет назад
As I understand it, the 10C is a Fender Deluxe Reverb, a Matchless DC30, A Fender Blues Junior, A Marshall Bluesbreaker, and A Dr Z Mini Z. All "low" gain amps. All great blues amps. But when I want to kick it up a notch I want to hit the front end with some drive. So just wondering what you are using to notch it up. I'm thinking of getting a TS808 Re-Issue. As for the Marshall, are you referring to the new CODE50? I love metal, but for now I'm looking for a silky smooth blues tone. I'll gran a 10X when funds allow.
@Doug5524
@Doug5524 8 лет назад
yes it has all that, I confess I don't use it to it's full potential I would think that a TS808 would work ok but I have not got a TS808 for that bit of extra I use the E6 you can probably download a TS808 straight into the THR10C as well as other amps

Musicians need to understand this... as a sound engineer... What you hear in the room, is not what's on the record. What you hear on you on-stage monitor, is NOT what the people hear in the room. What you hear through your headphones listening to a YT video, is NOT how it sounds in real life. I mean... you can walk in the biggest studio in the world with the quietest room and it will NOT sounds like the record in the room. I gua-ran-tee this. On the other hand, you can be in a shitty rehearsal room and get a KILLER tone and recording. So what the thing sounds in your kitchen does NOT matter. What matter is, what it's capable of when properly mick'ed and played extremely fucking well - and then mixed and mastered to sound as a best as possible. Seriously : we're tired. You guys learned all the scales, all the chords, all the records, everything. We learned all the technique, the electricity, the physics of sound - but we're just asking one thing... Just ONE thing... Please understand that what you hear is NOT what you get. Not what the audience get. It's not. It's never gonna be. Period. Ever. Even with the best in-ears. The Beatles didn't heard a damn thing their whole touring career but they still rocked. You KNOW if it's good or not based on how you FEEL your performance much more than how you hear your performance. BTW I've been playing some big stages for 15 years even tho my "day job" is technician or sound "engineer" as we like to brag about it. Get some fucking clue. Buying the thing and NOT doing the work? What did you expect? Free talent from God?
