I did this mod and used Hinson clutch rubbers CU216. I also opted to use Vibra-Tite 122 thread locker because it is an oil tolerant thread locker. This mod makes the bike much quieter and smoother. Just as an FYI - once you drill the rivet heads off, drive the rivets out of the basket from the head side as the end opposite of the head is slightly larger and will not be able to be driven , or “backed” out. Glad I found this video and thanks for the feedback Mel.
Hey, mate! I’ve got a Tracer 9 21’ with 30k klm on it. Runs very nice, but has a very noticeable vibrations when I go beyond 5-6k rpm. Are the worn rubbers could be the cause of this?
Started getting the clutch basket noise after 22k miles. Will be following your steps when I get around to the repair. Great fix and quality work! Thank you! 🎉
Nice work. Now I know what I’m in for. No problem. Except I’m 62 years old and no longer have a well equipped shop, and will have to be one with the floor. LoL
Love it ... great solution and great video. I like when parts that can be repaired are repaired instead of simply being replaced, and as you said, saves something else going into the landfill. 👍
I just did this job today. I opted to use M7x1 countersunk hex screws. (Difficult to obtain however) This makes it so you don't have to open up the holes in the clutch basket for tapping as the existing 6mm hole is already the correct size. Also I found the backing plate steel was not as hard as expected & managed to drill out easily with a 90 degree countersink bit so the fastener heads clear the oil pump chain. Thanks for the video. Very helpful
Hi, where did you manage to find the m7x1 hex screws? And does that mean you only have to tap the existing 6 mm hole, so no helix-coil required? Thanks!
Yes I found the countersunk M7 x 1 screws on Ebay & used a Hinson CU216 rubber bush kit. The screws came from China, but were good quality. The length required is 20mm as countersink fasteners are measured from head face. The original rivet hole is 6mm, so is perfect tapping size for M7. Some people use M8 screws, but this I feel removes to much material from clutch basket upstands. Plenty of Loctite so they don't come out. Nice & quite now. Also chain tension is critical on these bikes & needs to be loser than the factory spec or make noise also. I run a Scottoiler as well. Cheers & good luck
@@carlsimons1688 Thank you for the info! Much appreciated, will try to fix the bushings soon :) One more question, were you able to tap the old rivets out by a hammer after you have drilled the rivet heads out? Or should the be drilled out from both sides?
excellent video.. I have a sneaking suspicion my mt09 has this very problem. Just purchased mine with 30,000 klms on it with noisy clutch basket but noise stops when I pull on the clutch lever. cheers.
Cheers for the vid. Just did my clutch what a difference. Mine was terrible been getting worse like a grinding feeling. To those doing the same to get rivits out sand flat then use blow torch then knock out the rivits. Anyway thanks
Merci pour cette vidéo très intéressante ( il y a juste une petite erreur sur le montage du dernier disque, il doit être décallé par rapport aux autres ). Thank you for this very interesting video (there is just a small error in the assembly of the last disc, it must be offset from the others).
Mel, awesome video well explained and within most diy reach too. Thoughts about the rubber bushes, if they are so shit and it’s common what about polyurethane replacements and or making up kits that have had the helicoils done and the retaining plate counter sunk with the bolts and the loctite?
Hi Mel great job and thanks for sharing. My friends bike needs done and I would appreciate it if you tell me the length of helicoil insert and countersunk screw please. Many thanks
What engine is it? Is it the cp3 ? I’ve got a 2021 mt09 with only 2000 miles and it’s been rattling from 200 miles. Now all the gears are clunky. Main dealership aren’t bothered much so I’m having to do my own research and fix! It’s doing my head in!
Amazing work brother.....I have a 86 radain with the same clunck at idel... give it a bit of throttle and it's gone .. amazing Yamaha still. Has clutch basket issues has same play but instead it's a pin that is too small from factory easy fix tho just replace worn pin but it's actually better to get a slightly bigger pin and slightly drill out and tap it in can tell right away it's better because old pin jiggles around
Hi Jon, We have the rubbers made as we do so many and keep them in stock, I couldn't comment on other bushes, try them yourself and let others know. It's an expensive try if it doesn't fit! Thanks for watching.
Hi can you tel me Yamaha fz6 clutch basket ring should be pressed on to basket or it loose I have noisy clutch and it dragging as well alll plates looks good and in limits
I've got a weird noise/vibration at 3-3.5k revs which seems to be hella prominent at held speeds, like 30mph or 40mph and that can be in 2nd-4th gears. It's like a piece of the bike below is moving against the rest of the bike and I can feel a strong vibration through the handlebars and foot pegs. I figured it was the clutch basket but really not sure - Is that what you had with this? Mines a 2014 MT-09 ABS.
@@melsmotors, a friend of mine with a similar one like mine, 2016 model, had the problem and installed a 2019 slipper clutch and problem is gone. Maybe he didn't ride the enough miles to get the problem back. I was thinking of doing the same but this repair you showed it's going to be way cheaper. Thanks again for your work, man. Best regards from Portugal.
@@Stevo10MrI have the same on my tracer 900. When the bike is in neutral it’s louder than when I hold the clutch in. Have had the same on a F700GS. I thought that’s something normal
Did you drill the rivet holes out with the drill bit that comes with the helicoil kit or did you just use the tap? It doesn’t look like you drilled the rivet holes from the video. I’m asking because I’m up to the point that I’m ready to install the helicoils.
I only drilled the head of the rivets then punched them through. The rivet holes are already the correct size for the helicoil tap, no further drilling is required. I hope this helps.
Hello, first of all, thank you for this tutorial. My motorcycle suffers from vibration at 3000/4000 rpm. And the symptomatic clicking noise of the clutch once it is released.... were the symptoms identical for your client? thanks in advance
Great work! Do you do this as a job were are you located? My tracer is doing some clutch noises to, need to find a good mechanic to do the work on it in London
Yes we do this as a job, we get people from all over the country coming down for this repair or buying the rubbers from us and having a go themselves. 👍
@melsmotors I'm located in London is it any close to you? Just saw the website! Will probably contact back next week as attending the Hastings Day Run on monday and will he ok to do the job after that depending on proce and waithing times and that?
Hi, Just checking availability to drop off my 2015 Tracer 900 abs for the clutch fix and maybe new clutch plates as it all needs to come off I guess? With Thanks Ricardo
Anyone with a 2021 Tracer 9 or XSR900 feel a slight vibration of the bike between the clutch hitting the friction zone and fully releasing the clutch upon takeoff? Not sure if this is the same problem this video addresses.
Hi Ryan, the vibrations are part of the symptoms of this issue. But I can't confirm that you have the same issue from afar, I would suggest taking it to your local bike dealer for confirmation. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
The rivets are steel, they were probably hot riveted, personally I would stick with the bolts. If it works your way please let everyone know. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Hi, My XSR900 just clocked 40,000. I have always thought the gearbox a bit vibey. Like the output shaft bearing was the problem. But could it be this? Yes I have the noise coming from the clutch area. What happens if left alone , can it fail?
Hi John, thanks for watching my video. Your bike has the exact same clutch basket, part number B7N1615000, so realistically, yes it could be the same issue, it's a very common problem. My customer also complained about a vibration which has now been eliminated since the fix. I've heard of this problem from as low as 15000 miles! It's unlikely to fail as I had to drill the rivets out, but it'll only get worse from here on. 🤞
@@betamaxtuned you need an M6 helicoil set ebay.us/twj90O everything you need is in the kit, Do not drill the holes bigger! they are already the correct size for the tap in the kit. Use lock tight ebay.us/nlu47f on the bolts and I think I torqued them to about 15Nm - 18Nm. Use a 1/4 torque wrench ebay.us/GNKxDy . The torque number is not overly important as long as they're all the same torque, you will get a feel for the correct tightness. I hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍😊
Normally a chatter on idle, if you put the bike in 1st gear and release the clutch slowly whilst stationary just to load the clutch slightly the noise should stop, if it does then that's the problem.
You can use any blue thread lock, there is no right or wrong, this is just a solution to this problem that I did. I used thread lock as a safety measure. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
Hi mate I think I have the same problem,it started about 50 miles after the 600 mile service .been to two dealership's and they don't want to no they just say the bike is ok .it look like there is a problem with yamaha.why put rubber bush in where you can't change them and nobody wants to accept it . 3000 mile and the bike sound's crap ,😡😡
Thanks for the update, yes the last plate is one notch over, I corrected the one in the video after someone else noticed it! 😣 Don't forget it's a 20 minute video.
Best thing to do about this is to ignore it. It's a commonly reported issue and hundreds of people report just ignoring it, and it has never caused anyone any trouble as far as I have read.
