The Synhouse/Synclav.com Synclavier Power Supply Replacement/Upgrade for Yamaha TX216/TX816 is normally mail ordered from Synclav.com and self installed using the illustrated installation instructions (takes 3-5 hours), but many TX816s have been sent in to be installed at Synhouse, here's two shown here, the one heard in this video is the one on the bottom sent in by Keyboard Specialties (B-3.com), the top unit is owned by a Vermont steel magnate.
The Synhouse power upgrade merely corrects the many, many deficiencies of the Yamaha TX816 by 1) removing the woefully underpowered garbage Yutaka power supply and replacing it with a 3x more powerful switching power supply and a GIANT Synclavier analog power supply that will barely fit in there (adds a few pounds of iron and copper to it) and 2) performing the star grounding modification that has gone in all the Synhouse Synclavier systems over $10,000 for the last 17+ years, improving safety and reducing noise. The greatly improved analog power headroom gives a smoother sound with better transient response and dynamic range.
If you want most of this effect without sending any money to Synhouse, just remove seven of the TF1 modules and run it with only one TF1, because that's all the stock power supply is worth anyway. Eight complete MIDI systems with 16 voices each need a lot more than that Yutaka crap to power it.
