Yamaha V Star 1100 Complete Oil and Filter Change (Best Quality)

You can buy any oil filter off amazon for super cheap here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000...
Oil can be found here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000...
Let me know if that link doesn't work.
Changing the oil on your motorcycle is the most important maintenance you can do. Depending on what bike you have and how old it is, oil changes should be done every 2500-3500 miles. This particular bike is slightly more difficult due to the face that the oil filter is blocked by the exhaust pipes. But if you have an hour of spare time, and want to save a few bucks (40-50) you can do it yourself.

Good video. One reminder though. The oil filter cover bolts are stainless steel and they thread into the aluminum block. Since steel and aluminum cool at different speeds they also expand and contract at different speeds. Because of this, you should let the engine cool till it's stone cold or you risk stripping the aluminum female threads. This is from my own experience.

Any parts store can get you set up with oil, brake fluid, and filters. Amazon works as well. I put some links in the video description for parts that would fit the bike in the video. But just change the year once you get into amazon, and it will tell you what you need to buy.

There is a special kind of oil for motorcycles. Don't use car oil. I linked some on Amazon in the video description, you can order from there if you want. But you can also buy it at any car parts store.

Thank you so much. I’ll be doing my own from now on, especially since the shops charge an arm and a leg for this simple thing. I appreciate you greatly man. I’m trying to learn to fix my own bike. I’m moving to a new house that has a huge garage so part of it will be a bike shop. I have a lot to learn but the journey will be fun and at least I’ll know the job was done right.

I had an old Vstar 1100. Great bike. I was just thinking about picking up another one, then your video reminded me about having to dismantle the exhaust and engine just to change the oil filter. It's all coming back to me now! What a ridiculous design by Yamaha. I still may get it....

Thanks for the video. Just did mine this afternoon (2003 VStar 1100) and I bet a lot of these bikes don't get filter changes very often! It took me a little over 3 hours, by far the worst part was trying to line the front pipe up, what a PITA!

I just watched this in 2023. Thanks man. Nice video 👍🏻 very simple and to the point. - can’t believe how good these bike hold up. Mine still looks brand new. I don’t ride it much though. (- 10,000 miles ) on it Anyone who’s still doing this bikes oil change, There is short angle bits now or flexible bits that fit behind that pipe to change the oil without removing the exhaust. I always do anyways because it’s cleaner. But I know some people forget about the exhaust gasket or don’t have one when they take it off and find out theirs is trash when they remove the pipe in the front of the engine and then they’re stuck trying to find one mid oil change. (Just order one ahead of time they’re super cheap) search vstar 1100 exhaust gasket

I have a '99 XVS1100. Thanks for this vid. I already checked the service manual but sometimes it's not very clear. It's helpful to see it done. I picked up an external filter kit from eBay for $150, a little over half a new one. I'll be putting it on once I fix the electrical problem - hit the start button and there's a loud click, all the lights go out. Suspecting the starter relay or the starter cut-off relay... I'd rather rebuild an engine than mess with electrical problems,.. lol

Holy crap, I was looking up videos on '08 xvs1100 oil change, and didn't even realize I clicked on a video by JerryRigEverything, whom I watch for his quality cellular test/teardown videos. Super awesome. He's definitely come a long way in quality as well in 6 years. It's also weird to not hear him talk in his Shatner pausing tone.

There should be a little window in the side of the motor that will let you see how much oil is in the bike. Make sure the bike is UPRIGHT when checking the oil. If it is leaning on the kickstand, the window will not be correct.

It is pretty annoying when you have to take off the exhaust to get to the tire. I recently purchased a Ducati, and it has the same problem; the exhaust has to come off in order to remove the tire. I dont think there is a simple work around for it.
