In today's video on Colton's Garage I go over the Yamaha V-Star 1100 and give a little update on everything I've done to it so far. Had to clean the carbs out and give it a new battery, but eventually we did get it started and running.

Do not use throttle during start up or your starter clutch will get messed up.

Yes, that is so true. Just turn on the choke and hit the starter without touching the throttle. Will save you a ton of money on replacing a starter clutch.

Thanks man! I knew a woman who traded her V-Star in with 60,000 miles, and it was still running like new as well. They're great bikes for sure!

It definitely need carb rejet and sync. But don’t give up on it. V Stars are great reliable bikes. That was just neglected.

Big tip.. DO NOTTTT blip the throttle when trying to start the bike.. it kills the starter motors on these bikes easily . It’s a known thing. If it’s not starting up on full choke you need to clean, tune and sync the carbs. The syncing is SUPER important. Also if you swap More than the intake like intake AND exhaust you gotta rejet the mains . The slow jets should be ok

Sad but true about the starter, my starter is making all kinds of sound, I do all my on work on my bike, don't have $800 to $1000 to pay someone to do it , I watched the RU-vid video and DAM IT, it looks hard

Oh and the pops on decel aren’t just bad carb tuning.. these bikes have AIS systems which burn off excess fuel in the exhaust.. you can delete the AIS system by removing and plugging the holes in the heads with .45 caliber shells.

I purchased a 2004 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic Silverado two years ago and it only had 2, 168 miles. It is in excellent shape and runs like a dream.

I purchased a 2003 Yamaha v star 1100. I’m having a hard time with right now I really don’t know what else to check. Carbs are cleaned, new Petcock , new voltage regulator, and new battery. Bike ran good for 1 hour after replacing everything. Then all of sudden I get a backfire and the bike stalled. Now it’s just turns over and won’t start. Any idea what I could do? This my first bike and I haven’t been able to ride but that one time since I got it

I loved my GSXR for what it was for, but it is sure is nice to be able to sit and ride comfortable sometimes

I’ve got a 650 I bought and got running for a few hundred but now I want something bigger. Can’t decide between an 1100 or one of the roadstar 1300’s

Before you go to expensive exhaust, remember that they make lollipops and pipe inserts to quiet it down and boost torque

It came with the Cobra exhaust on it. Personally its a bit loud for me. Definitely would like something a bit quieter.

@@ColtonsGarage - bought a 2004 V Star 1100 Silverado with open pipes and it ran so bad and backfired so much that I put the original pipes on. It runs much better without backfiring and is much quieter. I have made a few upgrades such as an oil filter relocation kit, new tires, and electrical ports for GPS and Phone. It rides and sounds great on the highway.

They don't seem to take very well to aftermarket pipes from what I've seen. I had a heck of a time getting the carbs dialed in on this one.

@@ColtonsGarage they usually need to be re jetted with aftermarket exhaust. Especially the high performance stuff. I have the cobra power pro 2 to 1 and the jets it came with run significantly more rich than stock. Also have pod style dual air filters.
